Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) are three of the most important elements used to build living beings, and their uptake from the environment is consequently essential for all organisms. Photosynthesis is the process in which plants absorb atmospheric C as they grow and convert it to biomass. However, plants acquire N and P only when these are available in the soil solution, which makes these elements the most limiting nutrients in plant growth and productivity in most ecosystems. When plant residues and roots decompose, the C, N and P they contain is transformed primarily into soil organic matter (SOM) or C and N can release to the atmosphere. Recent interest on the global C, N and P cycles has focused attention on the different proportion of terrestrial C, N and P stored in different ecosystem pools. Cuatro Cienegas represents an exceptional place, since the plants are not the base of the food web, they are the microbial community, that recycle the elements essential for life. This book introduces selected contributions from the GEGAL (Spanish acronym for Latin American Geoarchaeological Studies Group) Workshop held at La Paloma Beach, Uruguay, with a focus on Coastal Geoarchaeology, and an attendance of more than 50 researchers, students and professionals from several Latin American countries. El presente estudio esta basado en un muestreo de caracter transversal en escolares entre 2 y 11 anos de edad del municipio de Donmatias (Antioquia), los cuales fueron evaluados antropometricamente para determinar su estado nutricional; adicionalmente se realizo un registro de la composicion de la dieta en tres dias de la semana con el fin de establecer su patron alimentario. Las variables antropometricas estudiadas fueron la talla, el peso, y los pliegues cutaneos tricipital y subescapular. Se estudio el crecimiento en distancia para el peso, la talla, el indice de masa corporal y la sumatoria de ambos pliegues en funcion del sexo y la edad, con el fin de conocer las variaciones a lo largo del periodo de crecimiento y estudiar el dimorfismo sexual. El patron alimentario se trabajo a partir del metodo de registro diario de los alimentos que recibian los ninos en tres dias de la semana discriminados cada uno en 6 momentos. La informacion obtenida se desagrego por grupos de alimento y alimentos de cada grupo, con lo cual se conocio la composicion de la dieta diaria de cada individuo y la conformacion de un plato medio habitual."

La suma de estas paginas responde al interes de estudiar la tradicion literaria de Popayan. No por tratarse de un conjunto diverso, la seleccion de estudios, articulos y resenas, da cuenta de un dialogo persistente con la poesia moderna de una region de Colombia que se caracteriza por el culto al pasado y la desestimacion casi obstinada del presente. De muchos modos nuestra conversacion con la poesia de Popayan se ha prolongado durante al menos una decada, en principio bajo la forma previa de una conferencia, un articulo academico, un estudio introductorio o bien la orientacion de un seminario tematico, todo ello dedicado a pensar las obras de los autores aqui considerados, principalmente: Guillermo Valencia (1873-1943), Rafael Maya (1897-1980), Alberto Mosquera (1904-1967), Matilde Espinosa (1910-2008), Gloria Cepeda (1928), Horacio Benavides (1949) y Fabio Holguin Marriaga (1961).
