A book like no other on the subject of Therapeutic Community (TC). The book is not only an elaboration of the principles and practices of the TC, but an exposition of its original concepts and their relevance to current practices in the treatment of addiction. It provides numerous examples that add clarity and experiential flavor to the entire presentation. There is a dearth of literature on the Concept-Based TC, particularly a standard of practice in the applications of its methods and approaches. Historically, most TC practitioners rely on experiential knowledge in implementing TC programs and disseminating information to clients. It is a book for all practitioners of the arts and science of healing and recovery from substance abuse and other addictions, including some mental afflictions. It covers a wide range of subjects related to evidence-based practices in the treatment of addiction. Besides tackling important issues and challenges facing the TC, it also provides ideas on how to bring the TC approach up to date with current understanding of addiction and treatment practices. Included in the book are client Workbooks, one on Orientation and Introduction of the TC and another on the Encounter Group, both of which are designed to help clients adapt to the TC environment more rapidly. The book is written both from experience and deep understanding of the rich traditions and philosophy of the TC and its potentials for healing addiction and other modern human maladies.
Dr. Perfas tackles the subject of therapeutic community with a unique and incisive approach. Using a social systems perspective, the author instills in the reader's mind the living-learning experience and dynamism that is the therapeutic community. "Therapeutic Community" provides ample illustrations and examples to explain social systems concepts and their relevance in understanding the workings of the therapeutic community. In describing the therapeutic community as a social system, the author clearly delineates its integral parts. Warning signs of potential sources of systemic problems are pointed out. A different treatment of an old subject, "Therapeutic Community: Social Systems Perspective" offers the reader a new look at the therapeutic community that is both refreshing and intriguing.
A readable and concise book on Therapeutic Community (TC). The author's style provides an experiential flavor while he attempts an easy to follow description and explanation of various aspects and methods of the TC. Although the book focuses on practical aspects it, nevertheless, offers the theoritical bases of some TC practices in the treatment of addiction. The book describes the current applications of the TC, and traces the origins of some of its practices. Chapters on spirituality in TC, the treatment of adolescent, relapse prevention, the role of family in drug treatment, and research and evaluation are included to cover other scopes of the TC that contribute to its positive treatment outcome.
