he Germans during the last two centuries turned their attention in
a special manner to the vast field of instruction and education;
but in no branch was there more earnest work done than in
Catechetics. In numerous cathechetical periodicals and
associations, and in a series of catechetical courses men of the
greatest talent have devoted all their learning and ability to
discuss and test the various methods, and to establish the most
fruitful process of teaching Catechism. The movement has not yet
met with perfect success; although the views of the weightiest
authors now approach unanimity and a number of principles have been
adopted as practically reliable, nevertheless it is not an easy
matter to reduce them to practice. Of the many who have attempted
to do so, only a few have met with satisfactory results. Lacking a
thorough understanding of said principles, nearly all have applied
them without sufficient care; among these are some who have the
reputation of being masters in Catechetics. The Rev. James Nist,
parish priest of Birkenhrerdt (Palatinate), easily surpasses all
his predecessors, and may be considered by far the best in
Catechetics, for he has satisfactorily fulfilled his task. He has,
indeed, mastered the true catechetical Method, without allowing it
to master him. His catechetical works, therefore, deserve to be
recommended as models. Even the older and more experienced
Catechists can find much to learn therein, and especially the rare
art of becoming little with the little, of accommodating oneself to
their mind, heart and will. Wherefore, most willingly complying
with the request of the Publisher, I have written this brief
Introductory to the English translation of his model work. I
recommend especially a thorough study of his treatment of the Sixth
Commandment, of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and of the
Sacrament of Penance (for the first confession).
The Sisters of the Visitation of Wilmington, Del., have conferred a
great benefit on the Catholics of all English speaking countries by
translating the following beautiful meditations, meditations so
full of lively faith and of sweet unction, as to deeply impress all
who make use of them. The late Bishop Becker of Savannah, who had
previously filled the See of Wilmington, greatly encouraged the
Sisters in their labor of love, and, after perusing their
translation, wrote under date of September 12th, 1895, the
following words of appreciation: "These very thoughtful meditations
suit every believer. Their beauty is incomparable, for they are
simplicity itself. We have been both edified and instructed whilst
merely reading the translation. It seems to be correct, and is
given in terse English. We highly commend the work, and deem it
worthy of approbation." The translators say that their translation
has been a work of love, having the sanction of obedience. They
humbly hope that it will receive the blessing of God and be "a
love-lighted torch" to guide many souls heaven- - ward, bringing to
them, as it did to the translators, peace and consolation. rrhese
meditations are well calculated to benefit not only ecclesiastics
and religious, but also the pious laity. The editor, in order to
adapt the work to the wants and devotions of our time and country,
has added the following meditations, taken principally from the
Meditations of Father Bronchairn, C. SS. R. - Feast of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus; - for the first Friday of every month, - for the
feasts of St. Francis Xavier, St. Paul of the Cross, St. Catharine
of Siena, St. Philip Neri, St. Antony of Padua, Our Lady of
Perpetual Help, St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St.
Vincent de Paul, St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, St. Jane Frances
de Chantal, Holy Name of Mary, the Holy Rosary, and St. Stanislaus
Kostka. Each page of this work has been hand inspected prior to
publication for completeness. Other publishers merely scan and
reprint errors and all, and possibly even missing pages.
Truth does not change and the duties of parents to their children
do not change with the times. This work on bringing up children is
in this respect timeless. Consider the solemn obligation of parents
to bring their children up properly, an obligation so sorely
neglected in these days of the Great Apostasy. This book will be
useful not only to parents who are raising children, but also to
couples contemplating entering the holy state of matrimony. Indeed
marriage is a great sacrament and the foundation of a strong
society and of civilization itself. Let the family be destroyed and
civilization will cease to exist This work commences: "DEAR
Christian parents, your responsibility as parents is indeed great.
As individuals, you are answerable for your own souls; but as
parents, you shall be required to give the Sovereign Judge a strict
account of the souls of your children. It is your sacred duty so to
train your children that they may become not merely good citizens
and useful members of society, but more- especially faithful
members of Christ's body on earth, viz., the holy Catholic Church,
in order that after this life they may be saints in God's heavenly
kingdom. If they become good practical Christians, they will most
certainly prove useful to society, and be law abiding and patriotic
citizens. Comparatively few parents thoroughly appreciate the full
extent of their responsibility. Were young men and young women,
before marriage, fully to realize the extent of the obligations
incumbent on parents, many would shrink from entering a state so
encumbered with duties and crosses. In the bringing up of children
both the father and mother should act in concert. If you neglect
your parental duties in whole or in part, or if in their discharge
you act separately from or in opposition or to each other, the tree
of your marriage will produce only thorns and thistles, and your
children will be, nei ther good Christians nor useful citizens,
and, far from becoming the prop and consolation of your old age,
they will bring down your gray hair with sorrow to the tomb.
St. Alphonsus writes: "a single bad book will be sufficient to
cause the destruction of a monastery." Pope Pius XII wrote in 1947
at the beatification of Blessed Maria Goretti: "There rises to Our
lips the cry of the Saviour: 'Woe to the world because of scandals
' (Matthew 18:7). Woe to those who consciously and deliberately
spread corruption-in novels, newspapers, magazines, theaters,
films, in a world of immodesty " We at St. Pius X Press are calling
for a crusade of good books. We want to restore 1,000 old Catholic
books to the market. We ask for your assistance and prayers. This
book is a photographic reprint of the original. The original has
been inspected and some imperfections may remain. At Saint Pius X

photographic reproductions and in textual reproductions that are
reprinted. Photographic reproductions are given a page by page

The future welfare of both Church and state depends chiefly on the
manner in which the rising generation is brought up, for if all
parents were to give their children a good religious training, the
future prosperity of both Church and state would be assured,
because a good religious training will make children good
Christians, and, as experience proves, good Christians are always
good citizens. In our "Popular Instructions on Marriage" we have
briefly outlined the duties of parents in the bringing up of their
children. In this little work we enter more fully into details, and
clearly point out, almost step by step, the manner in which
Christian parents should bring up their children from birth to the
time when they embrace that state of life for which God has
destined them may this little book prove useful in directing and
assisting parents in the proper performance of the noble but
difficult task of making their children exemplary Christians and
virtuous citizens
