Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
In the 1960s, art patrons Dominique and Jean de Menil founded an
image archive showing the ways that people of African descent have
been represented in Western art from the ancient world to modern
times. Highlights from the image archive, accompanied by essays
written by major scholars, appeared in three large-format volumes,
consisting of one or more books, that quickly became collector's
items. A half-century later, Harvard University Press and the Du
Bois Institute are proud to have republished five of the original
books and to present five completely new ones, extending the series
into the twentieth century. The Impact of Africa, the first of two
books on the twentieth century, looks at changes in the Western
perspective on African art and the representation of Africans, and
the paradox of their interpretation as simultaneously "primitive"
and "modern." The essays include topics such as the new medium of
photography, African influences on Picasso and on Josephine Baker's
impression of 1920s Paris, and the influential contribution of
artists from the Caribbean and Latin American diasporas.

"The Rise of Black Artists," the second of two books on the
twentieth century and the final volume in The Image of the Black in
Western Art," marks an essential shift in the series and focuses on
representation of blacks by black artists in the West. This volume
takes on important topics ranging from urban migration within the
United States to globalization, to Negritude and cultural
hybridity, to the modern black artist s relationship with European
aesthetic traditions and experimentation with new technologies and
media. Concentrating on the United States, Europe, and the
Caribbean, essays in this volume shed light on topics such as
photography, jazz, the importance of political activism to the
shaping of black identities, as well as the post-black art
world."
The San Vincenzo Project, focused upon the Benedictine monastery of
San Vincenzo al Volturno, in central Italy, was launched in 1980.
In addition to developing the archaeological potential of the
well-known ninth-century painted crypt of San Lorenzo and to
defining the general character of the early medieval monastery, a
major aim of the project was through a combination of survey and
small-scale excavation within the territory to define the
relationship between the early medieval monastery and its dependent
communities. This volume summarizes the archaeology of the
territory, placing emphasis upon the long settlement history of
which San Vincenzo al Volturno was a part, as well as the dependent
communities of the Benedictine monastery identified during the
fieldwork. The volume includes an overview of the 1980-1 field
survey (including investigations of the castelli in the upper
Volturno valley and the survey and excavations on Monte Mare); the
principal results of the extensive excavations on the east bank of
the river, including the Samnite cemetery and vicus, the Samnite
and Roman settlement, the early medieval industrial complex and
borgo, as well as the twelfth-century monastery; reports on
excavations at two hilltop sites, Colle Castellano and Colle
Sant'Angelo. In addition, there are essays on the San Vincenzo
community in Capua; on the upper Volturno valley in Roman times; a
reconsideration of late antique San Vincenzo and an assessment of
the upper Volturno valley in the early Middle Ages.
Uganda is one of the countries where Organic agriculture has
thrived for sometime. However, because of its' perceived labour
intensity some small scale farmers are reluctant to adopt it. This
book therefore aims at exploring the dynamics of adoption of
organic agriculture in Kyalulangira sub-county, Rakai district
located in Uganda. It sought to find out how farmers perceived
organic agriculture, the reasons for the persistent use of
synthetic agrochemicals in the area, the factors affecting organic
agriculture adoption, the challenges to organic agriculture
practice in the sub-county as well as farmers' recommendations for
popularising organic agriculture in the area. Following a survey
design, we interviewed one hundred fifty randomly selected farmers
from the five parishes of Kyalulangira sub-county, Rakai District.
Results from the study indicate that organic agriculture is mainly
perceived as farming without synthetic agrochemicals. Farmers'
knowledge/awareness of organic agriculture and cost of production
are the main factors influencing adoption.
