The volume offers a number of representative papers on cognitive
models that are invoked when people deal with questions of social
identity, political and economic manipulation, and more general
issues such as the genomic discourse. In line with the well-known
volume Cultural Models in Language and Thought by Holland and Quinn
(1987), the volume shows that Cognitive Linguistics has further
explored the idea that we think about social reality in terms of
models - 'cognitive/cultural models' or 'folk theories'. As in
cultural models, the present volume demonstrates that the technical
apparatus of Cognitive Linguistics can be used to analyze the
various ways our conception of social reality is shaped by
underlying cognitive and/or cultural models or patterns of thought,
and also looks into how this is done. The new inroad the volume
wants to pursue is the deliberate and explicit orientation towards
a cognitive sociolinguistics, or more generally, a cognitive
semiotics.
Within International Relations scholarship, the nature of
international organizations and their relationship with each other
and nation-states has been widely contested. This edited volume
brings together a team of experts to shed new light on
inter-organizational relations in world politics. The book covers
areas from the rule of law and international security to business
and sport. Through its analysis, it demonstrates that, just as
inter-organizations relations themselves are diverse and complex,
research on this topic should also be pluralistic in order to draw
new and valuable results and insights.
For the past forty years, Jim Stump could be found sitting in a
cafe on the Stanford University campus chatting with some of the
most talented athletes in the world, walking with them, getting to
know them, sharing his life with them, and loving them. He
understands that the best way to have an eternal impact on the
world is to develop deep and meaningful relationships with a
handful of people. When Jesus walked the earth, he focused his
energies not on filling stadiums but on twelve handpicked disciples
whom he mentored and equipped to carry out ministries of their own.
With engaging personal stories of the famous athletes he has
mentored, along with examples from the life of Jesus, Jim Stump
shows how to develop rich mentoring relationships with the people
in our lives. He answers the question so many of us have--"How can
I help to bring my friends to faith?"--by providing simple steps
toward developing those relationships, living life authentically,
and sharing faith with those we care about.
Pastors, youth pastors, small group leaders, and individual
believers will find "The Power of One-on-One "inspirational,
encouraging, and practical.
Pedro Gomez of ESPN was a beloved figure in baseball. His death
from sudden cardiac arrest on Feb. 7, 2021, unleashed an outpouring
of heartfelt tributes. He was 58, both a hard-nosed reporter and a
smiling ambassador of the sport. These 62 personal essays soar
beyond sports to delve into life lessons. Pedro, a proud Cuban
American, was known for his dramatic reporting from Havana. Fully
and fluidly bilingual, he did as much as anyone to bridge the wide
gap that had existed between U.S.-born players and the Latin
Americans now so important to the game's vitality and future
growth. He was also a family man who loved to talk about his three
children, Sierra, Dante and Rio, a Boston Red Sox prospect. Pedro
was universally known as a smiling presence who brought out the
best in people. His humanity and generosity of spirit shaped
countless lives, including one of his ESPN bosses, Rob King, who
was so moved by Pedro's advice to him--"Remember who you are"--that
he printed up the words and posted them on the wall of his office
in Bristol. King is one of a diverse collection of contributors
whose personal essays turn Pedro's shocking death into an occasion
to reflect on the deeper truths of life we too often overlook. Part
The Pride of Havana and part Tuesdays With Morrie, part The Tender
Bar and part Ball Four, this is the rare essay collection that
reads like a novel, full of achingly honest emotion and painful
insights, a book about friendship, a book about standing for
something, a book about joy and love. Former New York Times writer
Jack Curry writes about Pedro's passion for live music, and former
Sports Illustrated writer Tim Kurkjian brings alive spring-training
basketball games with executives like Sandy Anderson and Billy
Beane and Pedro right in the mix. Detroit manager AJ Hinch and
formers Texas manager Ron Washington both reveal that in their
darkest hours Pedro gave them some of the best advice of their
lives. Hall of Famers Dennis Eckersley, Tony La Russa, Peter
Gammons, Ross Newhan, Tracy Ringolsby and Dan Shaughnessy are among
the contributors. So are likely future Hall of Famers Max Scherzer
and Dusty Baker. Pulitzer-Prize-winning Washington Post war
correspondent Steve Fainaru, award-winning writers from Howard
Bryant and Mike Barnicle to Tim Keown, Ken Rosenthal and Dave
Sheinin also contribute. Rounding out the mix are current and
former ESPN stars including Rachel Nichols, Shelley M. Smith, Peter
Gammons, Bob Ley and Keith Olbermann. This is a book to rekindle in
any lapsed fan a love of going to the ballpark, but it's also a
wakeup call that transcends sports. To any journalist, worn down by
the demands of a punishing job, to anyone anywhere, pummeled by
pandemic times and the dark mood of the country in recent years,
these essays will light a spark to seize every opportunity to make
a difference, in your work and in the lives of people who matter to
you.
Improving Business Agility with EDA Going beyond SOA, enterprises
can gain even greater agility by implementing event-driven
architectures (EDAs) that automatically detect and react to
significant business events. However, EDA planning and deployment
is complex, and even experienced SOA architects and developers need
expert guidance. In Event-Driven Architecture, four leading IT
innovators present both the theory of EDA and practical,
step-by-step guidance to implementing it successfully. The authors
first establish a thorough and workable definition of EDA and
explore how EDA can help solve many of today's most difficult
business and IT challenges. You'll learn how EDAs work, what they
can do today, and what they might be able to do as they mature.
You'll learn how to determine whether an EDA approach makes sense
in your environment and how to overcome the difficult
interoperability and integration issues associated with successful
deployment. Finally, the authors present chapter-length case
studies demonstrating how both full and partial EDA implementations
can deliver exceptional business value. Coverage includes How SOA
and Web services can power event-driven architectures The role of
SOA infrastructure, governance, and security in EDA environments
EDA core components: event consumers and producers, message
backbones, Web service transport, and more EDA patterns, including
simple event processing, event stream processing, and complex event

Heal Emotional Wounds and Free Yourself from the Past We all
experience emotional pain, but few of us know how to deal with it
properly. Our unresolved pain accumulates deep within the recesses
of our hearts, in a place Jimmy Evans calls the "hurt pocket." The
more we accumulate, the more we are mentally, emotionally, and
relationally crippled. But what if we could reach into that hurt
pocket, confront our pain, and experience release and freedom? In
this life-changing book, Jimmy Evans shows you how to completely
remove and resolve every negative event from your past that is
compromising your present and keeping you from your God-given
destiny. With inspired vulnerability and searing honesty, he helps
you forgive others (and yourself) and discover true inner peace and
hope for the future.
God didn't create marriage to frustrate us, test us, or to make us
feel unworthy or inadequate. He created marriage to be the most
fulfilling and sacred of all human covenants. It was designed to be
passionate and rewarding and to meet our deepest needs and desires.
And it was meant to last a lifetime. So how do you build an
indestructible marriage that is filled with passion, purpose, and
excitement?
In "Lifelong Love Affair, " Jimmy Evans shows couples how to
embrace God's dream for their marriage, cultivate romance and fun,
and fulfill each other's spiritual, emotional, and sexual needs.
With more marriages today ending in divorces than ever before, and
more young people cohabiting rather than getting married, the
message of this book is sorely needed. Any married couple and
anyone considering marriage will find "Lifelong Love Affair" an
essential tool they will turn to again and again for inspiration
and strength. Foreword by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott.
This volume views human existence from various perspectives and
asks what its purpose is. The underlying thesis is that humans are
creatures of relationships. Any anthropology that fails to take
this fact seriously will of necessity remain abstract. Instead the
authors are interested in how different academic disciplines
describe the variety of relationships in human life, taking into
account their ethical and theological dimensions.

Despite all the effort that has gone into bringing about a spelling
reform for German, astonishingly little research has been done into
the use of spelling dictionaries. The present study sets out to
test the utility of generally available dictionaries of this kind
(including the DUDEN). Can spelling dictionaries be made more
user-friendly? The findings of the study are crystallized in 14
suggestions for improvement pertaining both to the dictionary
section proper (the handling of the entries themselves) and the
sections on spelling rules.

Sports raise a host of ethical questions and problems. This study
presents sports ethics using as its ethical model the dignity of
man who is created in the image of God, and applies this model
productively to ethical questions in sports. It includes exemplary
discussions on contemporary issues, including doping, gender
ratios, environmental protection, politicization,
commercialization, and sports as a possible venue for ethical
education.

In
