This introduction to American literature and culture from 1900 to
1960 is organized around four major ideas about America: that is it
"big," "new," "rich," and "free."
Illustrates the artistic and social climate in the USA during this
period.
Juxtaposes discussion of history, popular culture, literature and
other art forms in ways that foster discussion, questioning, and
continued study.
An appendix lists relevant primary and secondary works, including
websites.
An ideal supplement to primary texts taught in American literature
courses.
Transnational organizations and practitioners who use sport for
international development often position sport as a unique option
for tackling development challenges. While sport can be a tool for
social change, the authors in this collection bring a critical eye
to this assumption and offer new perspectives on the use of sport
for development and peace (SDP) in local and global contexts. The
book seeks to generate new dialogues and explore linkages for
development and SDP researchers through considerations of sport's
potential to challenge and/or perpetuate key global issues and
problems. These analyses consider the SDP work done 'on the ground'
and interrogate the historical, social and political circumstances
of these practices. The authors explore how best to examine,
theorize, critique and potentially improve local SDP initiatives.
This book will be of great interest to students and researchers of
both Development Studies and Sport. It was originally published as
a special issue of the online journal Third World Thematics.

Sports, Society, and Technology: Bodies, Practices, and Knowledge
Production addresses the complex entanglements of science,
technology, and sporting cultures. The collection explores themes
around human and non-human actants, knowledge formations and
processes, and the materiality and multiplicity of bodies through
an engagement with the interdisciplinary fields of Sport Studies
and Science and Technology Studies. Representing a range of
methodological, theoretical, and disciplinary approaches,
contributors interrogate the social, cultural, political, and
historical intersections of an ever-expanding techno-scientific
sporting landscape - from true bounce and brain trauma to exercise
physiology, metrics, and esports, and from feminist technoscience,
whey protein, and epigenetics to sickle cell screening and
testosterone regulation.

Why are some children abused or neglected? What can be done to protect and help them? A key element of informed decision making is knowing what sort of problems are amenable to what sort of intervention, in what circumstances, and with what degree of certainty. Effective Interventions for Child Abuse and Neglect provides a thorough and detailed review of the available research, and makes suggestions as to how this evidence can be incorporated into professional child protection work. Geraldine Macdonald first considers the range of evaluative tools available, with illustrations from existing research studies and reviews, and appraises their respective merits and limitations. She then describes the interplay of a range of causal factors in abuse and neglect, and considers different types of maltreatment and their potential consequences. Evidence for effective preventative and therapeutic measures are considered next, followed by a final section on accurate assessment and the use of formal tools in risk management.
Numerous provocative studies on the psychological effects of
aerobic fitness training are available today, and more are
appearing almost on a daily basis. This book reviews and evaluates
the research, and it asks and attempts to answer significant
background questions: What are the various motivating factors that
have contributed to the emergence of the national fitness movement?
What are the public health considerations con- cerning the
relationship between physical fitness and coronary heart disease?
What exactly do we mean by "physical fitness," especially "aerobic"
fitness? This book contains essential, in-depth data for everyone
interested in the most solid and reliable information on the
psychology of aerobic fitness.
The goal of biogeography is to build an understanding of biogeography as a unified science studying how environment, space and time interact to control the large-scale distribution of organisms. This title includes the key concepts related to the study of vegetation and animal distributions and the human impact on these distributions.
Three of the leading figures in the field have composed this excellent introduction to the theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras. Together these lectures provide an elementary account of the theory that is unsurpassed. In the first part, Roger Carter concentrates on Lie algebras and root systems. In the second Graeme Segal discusses Lie groups. And in the final part, Ian Macdonald gives an introduction to special linear groups. Graduate students requiring an introduction to the theory of Lie groups and their applications should look no further than this book.
