The suspension dosage form has long been used for poorly soluble
active ingre- ents for various therapeutic indications. Development
of stable suspensions over the shelf life of the drug product
continues to be a challenge on many fronts. A good understanding of
the fundamentals of disperse systems is essential in the
development of a suitable pharmaceutical suspension. The
development of a s- pension dosage form follows a very complicated
path. The selection of the proper excipients (surfactants,
viscosity imparting agents etc.) is important. The particle size
distribution in the finished drug product dosage form is a critical
parameter that significantly impacts the bioavailability and
pharmacokinetics of the product. Appropriate analytical
methodologies and instruments (chromatographs, visco- ters,
particle size analyzers, etc.) must be utilized to properly
characterize the s- pension formulation. The development process
continues with a successful scale-up of the manufacturing process.
Regulatory agencies around the world require cli- cal trials to
establish the safety and efficacy of the drug product. All of this
devel- ment work should culminate into a regulatory filing in
accordance with the regulatory guidelines. Pharmaceutical
Suspensions, From Formulation Development to Manufacturing, in its
organization, follows the development approach used widely in the
pharmaceutical industry. The primary focus of this book is on the
classical disperse system - poorly soluble active pharmaceutical
ingredients s- pended in a suitable vehicle.
The creation of the Canadian Light Source (CLS) in Saskatoon, which
began operation in 2004, was the largest science project in Canada
in the last fifty years. The multi-beam facility operates more than
five thousand hours per year and has more than one thousand
Canadian and international users from a wide range of science,
medical, and engineering disciplines. This book describes the
decades of intense research from many scientists to justify this
project and the resulting outstanding research covering many areas
of the physical, biological, medical, and agricultural sciences.
With personal accounts and frank narration, this book describes the
long history leading to the CLS, beginning in Saskatoon in the
1930s. The core of the book highlights the remarkable and unselfish
collaboration and cooperation of a few hundred people from Canadian
and international universities, governments, and industry,
showcasing how the Canadian Light Source represents pure and
applied research at its finest.
Although the field of deliberative civic engagement is growing
rapidly around the world, our knowledge and understanding of its
practice and impacts remain highly fragmented. Democracy in Motion
represents the first comprehensive attempt to assess the practice
and impact of deliberative civic engagement. Organized in a series
of chapters that address the big questions of deliberative civic
engagement, it uses theory, research, and practice from around the
world to explore what we know about, how we know it, and what
remains to be understood. More than a simple summary of research,
the book is designed to be accessible and useful to a wide variety
of audiences, from scholars and practitioners working in numerous
disciplines and fields, to public officials, activists, and average
citizens who are seeking to utilize deliberative civic engagement
in their communities. The book significantly enhances current
scholarship, serving as a guide to existing research and
identifying useful future research. It also has promise for
enhancing practice, for example by helping practitioners, public
officials, and others better think through and articulate issues of
design and outcomes, thus enabling them to garner more support for
public deliberation activities. In addition, by identifying what
remains to be learned about public deliberation, practitioners and
public officials may be inspired to connect with scholars to
conduct research and evaluations of their efforts.
"Struggle for a Better South" dispels the notion that all whites in
the South stood united against social change in the 1960s. Gregg
Michel's compelling study of the Southern Student Organizing
Committee (SSOC), the leading progressive organization created by
young white activists in the South during that tumultuous decade,
fills a crucial gap in the literature about New Left activism.
Michel shows that the SSOC was the only activist group of the era
that worked to cultivate white support for the social movement. The
SSOC's members gave themselves the delicate task of reconciling
their love for the South and its history--warts and all--with their
modern-day commitment to equality and justice for all people.

A twisted, wildly imaginative tale of one man's mysterious illness
and his journey through a dystopian hospital system. When Yang Wei
travels to C City for work, he expects nothing more than a standard
business trip. A break from his day-to-day routine, a good
paycheck, a nice hotel-nothing too extravagant, of course. No fuss,
but all the amenities. But this is where his problems begin. A
complimentary bottle of mineral water from the hotel minibar
results in sudden and debilitating stomach pain, followed by
unconsciousness. When he wakes three days later, things don't
improve; they get worse. With no explanation, the hotel forcibly
sends him to a hospital for examination. There, he receives no
diagnosis, no discharge date...just a diligent guide to the
labyrinthine medical system he's now circulating through. Armed
with nothing but his own confusion, Yang Wei travels deeper into
the inner workings of the hospital and the secrets it's hiding from
the patients. As he seeks escape and answers, one man's illness
takes him on a quest through a corrupt system and his own troubled
mind.

In the follow-up to the visionary Hospital, Yang Wei discovers that
there’s more to the mysterious hospital than meets the eye—and
none of it is as it seems. Yang Wei wakes to find himself still a
patient at the hospital. Somehow, he’s aged decades overnight and
is confined to the geriatric ward on a massive Hospital ship as it
floats along a bloodred sea full of unsightly things. But human
remains and sea nymphs are perhaps nothing compared to the
goings-on belowdecks. The doctors are nowhere to be found, replaced
by a procession of medical robots from whom, of course, no
information can be gleaned. So Yang Wei, along with a small group
of patients—all just as aged as he is—venture out to explore
the uncharted depths of the ship and the answers that are surely
hidden within. As they delve deeper into both the ship and why
they’re on it, every uncovered secret comes with its own
questions. The only thing Yang Wei can be sure of is that the more
he learns, the less he understands…and the less he truly wants to
know.

John R. Searle is one of the world's leading philosophers. During
his long and outstanding career, he has made groundbreaking and
lasting contributions to the philosophy of language, to the
philosophy of mind, as well as to the nature, structure, and
functioning of social reality. This volume documents the 13th
Munster Lectures on Philosophy with John R. Searle. It includes not
only 11 critical papers on Searle's philosophy and Searle's replies
to the papers, but also an original article by John R. Searle on
his overall philosophical enterprise entitled "The Basic Reality
and the Human Reality". "I think Munster is probably unique among
contemporary universities in its ability to produce such a high
level of philosophical production from their philosophy students."

This book aims to be a single point of reference for advances in
the care of geriatric populations across medical and surgical
specialties. The aging population is a unique demographic with its
own health challenges. Geriatricians are specifically trained to
address these challenges but few medical students or residents
enter geriatrics, even as the demand for geriatric expertise
increases. The practices of many medical and surgical specialists
are dominated by older patients who may themselves see many
specialists but rarely visit geriatricians. This updated edition
elucidates the most common medical conditions seen in aging
patients and translates approaches to those conditions for
physicians across specialties. Divided into three sections that
assemble crosscutting issues, medical specialties, and surgical and
related specialties, this book serves as a guide for clinicians of
all backgrounds who will work with older patients as the
demographic ages further. This second edition of Geriatrics for
Specialists expands the number of specialist chapters to reflect
growth in research in aging and clinical care for older people in
dermatology, plastic surgery, and behavioral neurology. All
original chapters from the first edition are extensively revised
and updated to reflect the rapid growth of new knowledge in the
field.

There have been over 400 bird species observed in southern Florida,
and this guide covers the 248 species most likely to be encountered
by birdwatchers in the region. Nearly all of the families found in
the area are included, along with some of the rarer, more
interesting and spectacular species. Packed with full-colour
photographs, each carefully selected to guide identification, and
accompanying text that also covers habitat, lifestyle and
distribution, this is an ideal pocket-sized guide for travellers.
In the second edition of Interviewing, experienced educators Rob
Anderson and G. Michael Killenberg explain and demystify the
interviewing process, offering students a practical guide to the
fascinating art of asking and answering questions. Throughout, they
urge students not to view interviewing as a procedure or as a
collection of techniques; instead, they present the process of
interviewing as a fascinating opportunity for learning through
dialogue. The basic motivation for interviewing is learning
something new.
Each chapter features two sections: "The Basics," which describes
essential skills, and "Beyond the Basics," which places them into a
relevant context. Moreover, interviewing skills are clearly divided
into three interrelated types: Listening, Questioning, and Framing.
To highlight the practical, real-world significance of
interviewing, the authors encourage students to apply their
learning actively and to connect their skills with ideas from other
communication, social science, and humanities courses. This
student-friendly text also includes the following features:
* An emphasis on how interviewing contributes to the quality of
public dialogue
* An integrated approach to both interviewer and interviewee
roles
* In-depth coverage of culture and ethics
* Innovative boxed supplements, including:
- "Interviewers/Interviewees in Action" boxes, featuring
first-person accounts
- "Trying Out Your Skills" boxes
- End-of-chapter "Making Your Decision" boxes, which present
interactive hypothetical situations designed to generate class
discussion
In addition, each chapter includes "The Interview Bookshelf," an
annotated section recommending booksthat students will find helpful
for further reading or for future interviewing-related assignments
in other classes. A comprehensive online Instructor's Resource
Guide is also available and provides suggestions for class
activities, resources, and assignments.
