R2,729 Discovery Miles 27 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sociology and Catholic Social Teaching: Contemporary Theory and Research contains essays by key scholars in the territory where Catholic social thought and secular sociology meet, and offers a much needed alternative to the relativism and individualism that so often characterize social scientific analysis today. Contributors to this volume argue that Catholic social teaching, as articulated so powerfully today in recent papal encyclicals and major summations such as the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, offers a powerful moral framework for addressing today s pressing social problems. This is especially true since many of its tenets find solid support in social scientific research on the nature of the person and the workings of culture and social institutions. Sponsored by the Society of Catholic Social Scientists, and including work by sociologists from both the Society and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, this volume is offered in the spirit of Pope John Paul II s exhortation to draw from contemporary social science whatever can help the Church better understand contemporary social issues and trends and thus better serve humanity. Specific articles address such topics as the Church as a virtual nation in the international arena; changing cultural norms regarding deviance; the historical and contemporary relationship between Catholicism and mainstream academic sociology; empirical support for a natural law perspective on family relations; the social psychology of happiness and moral behavior among emerging adults; the sociology of knowledge from a distinctively Catholic perspective; and how the principles of subsidiarity and solidarity can be used to analyze and evaluate the functioning of institutions like the family, education and the state. Each author also offers some autobiographical reflections on how they relate sociology and their life of Faith. This anthology will interest scholars in both sociology and Catholic social thought, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students in these areas."

The Self, Supervenience and Personal Identity (Paperback): Roland G. Alexander The Self, Supervenience and Personal Identity (Paperback)
Roland G. Alexander
R1,074 Discovery Miles 10 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1997, this volume addresses the issue of personal identity by examining the possibility that a person is ascribed identity on the basis of having a supervenient self. Ronald G. Alexander uses the methods of non-eidetic phenomenology and analytic ontology to argue that the self is supervenient on the physical and psychological properties of the human being. Understood through the manner Alexander advocates, the self is not a statis entity, but reflects the temporal nature of the person. Alexander argues that the self is the 'pattern', 'character', or 'narrative identity' that is the outcome of a person's decision-making and actions.

The A to Z of Mormonism (Paperback, 110 Ed): Davis Bitton, Thomas G. Alexander The A to Z of Mormonism (Paperback, 110 Ed)
Davis Bitton, Thomas G. Alexander
R1,301 Discovery Miles 13 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mormonism is the unofficial name for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which originated in the early 1800s. Mormonism refers to the doctrines taught by Joseph Smith, doctrines that are believed to be original gospel preached by Jesus Christ. The Mormons oppose abortion, homosexuality, unmarried sexual acts, pornography, gambling, tobacco, consuming alcohol, tea, coffee, and the use of drugs. Despite its relatively young age, the Mormon Church continues to grow, and today it contains about 13 million members. The A to Z of Mormonism relates the history of the Mormon church through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on crucial persons, organizations, churches, beliefs, and events. Clearing up many of the misconceptions held about Mormonism and its members, this is an essential reference.

Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting II - 2nd International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and... Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting II - 2nd International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting, ICCRRR-2, 24-26 November 2008, Cape Town, South Africa (Hardcover)
Mark G. Alexander, Hans-Dieter Beushausen, Frank Dehn, Pilate Moyo
R7,917 Discovery Miles 79 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Second International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting (ICCRRR 2005) was held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 24-26 November 2008. The Conference followed the very successful First International Conference, also in Cape Town in 2005, and continued as a collaborative venture by researchers from the South African Research Programme in Concrete Materials (based at the Universities of Cape Town and The Witwatersrand) and The Construction Materials Sections at Leipzig University and MFPA Leipzig in Germany. The background, in industry and the state of national infrastructures, continues to be highly challenging and demanding. The facts remain that much of our concrete infrastructure deteriorates at unacceptable rates, that we need appropriate tools and techniques to undertake the vast task of sound repair, maintenance and rehabilitation of such infrastructure, and that all this must be undertaken with due cognisance of the limited budgets available for such work. New ways need to be found to extend the useful life of concrete structures cost-effectively. Confidence in concrete as a viable construction material into the 21st century needs to be retained and sustained, particularly considering the environmental challenges that the industry and society now face. The conference proceedings contain papers, presented at the conference, and classified into a total of 12 sub themes which can be grouped under the three main themes of (i) Concrete durability aspects, (ii) Condition assessment of concrete structures, and (iii) Concrete repair, rehabilitation and retrofitting. The major interests in terms of submissions exists in the fields of innovative materials for durable concrete construction, integrated service life modelling of reinforced concrete structures, NDE/NDT and measurement techniques, repair methods and materials, and structural strengthening and retrofitting techniques. The large number of high-quality papers presented and the wide range of relevant topics covered confirm that these proceedings will be a valued reference for many working in the important fields of concrete durability and repair, and that they will form a suitable base for discussion and provide suggestions for future development and research. Set of book of abstracts (476 pp) and a searchable full paper CD-ROM (1396 pp).

Alkali-Aggregate Reaction and Structural Damage to Concrete - Engineering Assessment, Repair and Management (Paperback):... Alkali-Aggregate Reaction and Structural Damage to Concrete - Engineering Assessment, Repair and Management (Paperback)
Geoffrey E. Blight, Mark G. Alexander
R2,251 Discovery Miles 22 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since AAR was first identified in 1940, it has been a subject dominated by studies of the mineralogy of AAR-susceptible aggregates, the chemistry of the AAR and related reactions and laboratory tests used to diagnose AAR and predict potential future swelling. Civil and structural engineers have found the literature bewildering and difficult to apply to their immediate requirements of assessing the present and future effects of AAR on the strength, safety and serviceability of plain and reinforced concrete structures. The book discusses methods that can be used for laboratory destructive and in situ non-destructive testing to assess the effects of AAR, and in-service measurements and load-testing to assess the present and future safety of reinforced concrete structures. Methods of repair and rehabilitation and their long-term success are discussed, as are methods of halting or slowing the progress of AAR. At the same time, the fundamentals of AAR are explained in terms intelligible to the civil and structural engineer who is primarily trained in structural mechanics and design, but also needs to have a basic understanding of the AAR process and its effects on concrete.

Nikol G. Alexander-Floyd
R753 Discovery Miles 7 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

WINNER OF THE W.E.B. DUBOIS DISTINGUISHED BOOK AWARD, GIVEN BY THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF BLACK POLITICAL SCIENTISTS A wide-ranging Black feminist interrogation, reaching from the #MeToo movement to the legacy of gender-based violence against Black women From Michelle Obama to Condoleezza Rice, Black women are uniquely scrutinized in the public eye. In Re-Imagining Black Women, Nikol G. Alexander-Floyd explores how Black women-and Blackness more broadly-are understood in our political imagination and often become the subjects of public controversy. Drawing on politics, popular culture, psychoanalysis, and more, Alexander-Floyd examines our conflicting ideas, opinions, and narratives about Black women, showing how they are equally revered and reviled as an embodiment of good and evil, cast either as victims or villains, citizens or outsiders. Ultimately, Alexander-Floyd showcases the complex experiences of Black women as political subjects. At a time of extreme racial tension, Re-Imagining Black Women provides insight into the parts that Black women play, and are expected to play, in politics and popular culture.

Engineering Thermodynamics - SI Edition (Paperback, 2nd ed. 1988): D.C. Look, G. Alexander Engineering Thermodynamics - SI Edition (Paperback, 2nd ed. 1988)
D.C. Look, G. Alexander
R3,174 Discovery Miles 31 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Energy-its discovery, its availability, its use-concerns all of us in general and the engineers of today and tomorrow in particular. The study of thermodynamics-the science of energy-is a critical element in the education of all types of engineers. Engineering Thermodynamics provides a thorough intro duction to the art and science of engineering thermodynamics. It describes in a straightforward fashion the basic tools necessary to obtain quantitative solutions to common engineering applications involving energy and its conversion, conser vation, and transfer. This book is directed toward sophomore, junior, and senior students who have studied elementary physics and calculus and who are majoring in mechanical engineering; it serves as a convenient reference for other engineering disciplines as well. The first part of the book is devoted to basic thermodynamic principles, essentially presented in the classic way; the second part applies these principles to many situations, including air conditioning and the interpretation of statistical phenomena."

R2,523 Discovery Miles 25 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a Christian church that was organized by six men in western New York in 1830 under the leadership of Joseph Smith, the church has grown to more than 16 million members today. A restoration of the primitive church organized by Jesus Christ in the first century C. E., the church’s membership was originally all Americans. The church is now, however, a worldwide church with more members who live outside the United States than inside. The fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of the Latter-day Saints contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 400 cross-referenced entries on the important people, ideas, doctrine, and events during the hundred-ninety year history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Fourth International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting (ICCRRR 2015) was held 5-7 October 2015 in Leipzig, Germany. This conference is a collaborative venture by researchers from the South African Research Programme in Concrete Materials (based at the Universities of Cape Town and The Witwatersrand) and the Material Science Group at Leipzig University and The Leipzig Institute for Materials Research and Testing (MFPA) in Germany. ICCRRR 2015 continues to seek and to extend a sound base of theory and practice in repair and rehabilitation, through both theoretical andexperimental studies, and through good case study literature. Two key aspects need to be addressed: that of developing sound and easily applied standard practices for repair, possibly codified, and the need to study seriously the service performance of repaired structures and repair systems. In fact, without making substantial efforts to implement the latter goal, much of the effort in repair and rehabilitation may prove to be less than economical or satisfactory. The conference proceedings contain papers presented at the conference which can be grouped under the six main themes of (i) Concrete durability aspects, (ii) Condition assessment of concrete structures, (iii) Modern materials technology, (iv) Concrete repair, rehabilitation and retrofitting, (v) Performance and health monitoring and (vi) Education, research and specifications. The large number of high quality papers presented and the wide range of relevant topics covered confirm that these proceedings will be a valued reference for many working in this important field and that they will form a suitable base for discussion and provide suggestions for future development and research. Set of book of abstracts (244 pp) and a searchable full paper CD-ROM (1054 pp).

Mary Kelly had picked up the name 'Marie-Jeanette' while staying in Paris. Had the latter got into some kind of trouble while staying in this city and had the killer then followed her into London's East End? The Whitechapel Murders took place over a period of a little more than two months and ended just as swiftly as they had started. Had the assailant taken the lives of his other victims so as to cover his own tracks or had it been a case of mistaken identity? In this book I make the case that a close relative of the Post-Impressionist artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec took the law into their own hands when they discovered the artist was dying of syphilis. Having obtained the suspect woman's name from one of Lautrec's letters to his own mother, she was finally tracked down to 13, Miller's Court.

Requirement Assurance - A Verification Process (Paperback): Michael G. Alexander Requirement Assurance - A Verification Process (Paperback)
Michael G. Alexander
R415 Discovery Miles 4 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Requirement Assurance is an act of requirement verification which assures the stakeholder or customer that a product requirement has produced its "as realized product" and has been verified with conclusive evidence. Product requirement verification answers the question, "did the product meet the stated specification, performance, or design documentation?." In order to ensure the system was built correctly, the practicing system engineer must verify each product requirement using verification methods of inspection, analysis, demonstration, or test. The products of these methods are the "verification artifacts" or "closure artifacts" which are the objective evidence needed to prove the product requirements meet the verification success criteria. Institutional direction is given to the System Engineer in NPR 7123.1A NASA Systems Engineering Processes and Requirements with regards to the requirement verification process. In response, the verification methodology offered in this report meets both the institutional process and requirement verification best practices.

Security Requirements for Post-Transition Cuba (Paperback): Strategic Studies Institute, G. Alexander Crowther Security Requirements for Post-Transition Cuba (Paperback)
Strategic Studies Institute, G. Alexander Crowther
R390 Discovery Miles 3 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The United States, particularly the Army, has a long history of involvement with Cuba. This history has included the Spanish-American War of 1898, military interventions in 1906 and 1912, the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion, the 1962 Missile Crisis, counterinsurgency, and low intensity warfare in Latin America and Africa against Cuban supported guerrilla movements. During the Cold War, Fidel Castro's communist takeover on January 1, 1959, heightened U.S. concerns and highlighted the threat Cuba posed as a strategic ally of the Soviet Union. The collapse of the Soviet bloc in the 1990s raised hopes for an end to the communist regime in Cuba. However, after almost 5 decades of authoritarian rule, the Cuban dictator remains firmly in power. On July 31, 2006, his brother, Raul Castro, assumed provisional presidential power after an official announcement that Fidel was ill and would undergo surgery.
