The 91st London Mathematical Society Durham Symposium took place
from July 5th to 15th 2010, with more than 100 international
participants attending. The Symposium focused on Numerical Analysis
of Multiscale Problems and this book contains 10 invited articles
from some of the meeting's key speakers, covering a range of topics
of contemporary interest in this area. Articles cover the analysis
of forward and inverse PDE problems in heterogeneous media,
high-frequency wave propagation, atomistic-continuum modeling and
high-dimensional problems arising in modeling uncertainty. Novel
upscaling and preconditioning techniques, as well as applications
to turbulent multi-phase flow, and to problems of current interest
in materials science are all addressed. As such this book presents
the current state-of-the-art in the numerical analysis of
multiscale problems and will be of interest to both practitioners
and mathematicians working in those fields.
A fast and easy way to write winning white papers
Whether you're a marketing manager seeking to use white papers
to promote your business, or a copywriter keen to break into this
well-paying field, "White Papers For Dummies" gives you a wealth of
practical, hands-on advice from one of the world's leading experts
in the field.
The fact-based documents known as white papers have been called
the "king of content." No other B2B marketing piece can do more to
generate leads, nurture prospects, and build mindshare.
Where white papers were once used only by technology firms, they
are becoming "must-have" items in the marketing toolkit for almost
any B2B firm. Practically every startup must produce a white paper
as part of its business planning.
But writing effective white papers is a big challenge. Now you
can benefit from the experience of a white paper specialist who's
done more than 200 projects for clients from Silicon Valley to
Finland, from mighty Google to tiny startups. Author Gordon
Graham--also known as That White Paper Guy--provides dozens of tips
and tricks to help your project come together faster and
easier.
"White Papers For Dummies" will help you to: Quickly determine
if your B2B firm could benefit from a white paperMaster the three
phases of every white paper project: planning, production, and
promotionUnderstand when and how to use the three main types of
white paperDecide which elements to include and which to leave

First published in 1914 as part of the Cambridge Public Health
series and as a second edition of a 1913 original, this book
examines how flies that do not suck blood can still transmit
diseases from host to host. Graham-Smith examines the life
histories and habits of various species of fly that are common in
the United Kingdom as well as further afield, and suggests methods
to prevent and control the fly population. The text is richly
annotated with photographs, illustrations and charts, and will be
of value to anyone with an interest in disease prevention and the
history of public health.
This book describes the fortunes and activities of one of the few
specialist publishing houses still in the hands of the same family
that established it over years ago, and with it gives a p- trayal
of those members who directed it. In doing so it covers a period of
momentous historical events that directly and in- rectly shaped the
firm's actions and achievements. But this volume tells not only, in
word and picture, the story of Springer- Verlag but also,
interwoven with it, the story of scientific p- lishing in Germany
over the span of a hundred years. The text, densely packed with
carefully researched facts and figures, is illuminated and
supplemented by many illustrations whose captions, together with
the author's notes, contain a wealth of important and interesting
information. The reader is urged to read these captions as well as
the notes so as to - preciate in full the events and people
described. I have added a few footnotes to clarify or expand on
some matters that may be unfamiliar to non-German readers. Because
of the long period of time covered in these pages many of the
documents and letters shown and commented upon are different in
diction and style from those of today. An - tempt was made in the
translation to keep the flavour of the original language and not
contemporise it.

The following papers were presented at an international symposium
on the mechanisms and treatment of nausea and vomiting in man held
in Oxford in 1984. I believe that this meeting was the first
occasion on which representatives from such a wide variety of
scientific and clinical specialities had come together to review
and debate the spectrum of the vomiting phenomenon. An attempt was
made to put before an invited international audience all the
pertinent facts on the different facets of the topic and then to
encourage extensive discussion of the contentious issues. The first
day of the meeting was devoted to the basic science ap proach to
the problem and the second day to the more clinical aspects. This
format has been broadly retained in the layout of the book, with
the addition of summary chapters reviewing each day's contributions
and focusing upon areas of particular importance. Acknowledgement
must here be made to the enormous input from the many participants
who either spoke in the debate or rose and themselves gave small
presenta tions in addition to those of the invited speakers. The
meeting occurred at a time of increasing interest in the problem of
nausea and vomiting, especially because of its importance in cancer
chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and even in space travel."
"Philosophy of Mind: An Introduction" is a lively and accessible
introduction to one of philosophy's most active and important areas
of research.
In this second edition, George Graham maintains the strengths,
structure, and overall features of the first, but expands its
scope, deepens the detail, and reinforces the student-oriented
style and coverage. The book is aimed at readers with little or no
background in philosophy and covers a broad range of issues.
Included are such central topics as the mind/body problem, personal
identity, consciousness, intentionality and freedom of the will, as
well as others rarely included in elementary introductions such as
"after-death experience," minds of animals and of God, folk
psychology, mental illness, altruism, weakness of will and
happiness.
The book begins with a crisp introduction to the nature of the
philosophy of mind, and ends with a provocative discussion of the
causal role of consciousness in depression and schizophrenia. It is
supported by consideration of classical and contemporary figures
ranging from St. Thomas Aquinas, Descartes and Hume to the
Churchlands, Daniel Dennett, and John Searle.
It is the ideal text for a first course in philosophy of
mind.
This one-of-a-kind book fills a gap in the literature by providing
readers with a systematic approach to monitoring and evaluation
(M&E) training for programs and projects. Bridging theoretical
concepts with practical, how-to knowledge, authors Scott Chaplowe
and J. Bradley Cousins draw upon the scholarly literature, applied
resources, and over 50 years of combined experience to provide
expert guidance that can be tailored to different M&E training
needs and contexts, including those for novices, professionals,
organizations and their staff, community members, and other groups
with a desire to learn and sustain sound M&E practices.

How to fix the Modern American Diet and reclaim our minds and
waistlines "An insightful, eye opening adventure into diet and
nutrition. Concise and witty, this book kept me engaged from cover
to cover. A must-have for anyone serious about getting happy and
healthy naturally."-Andrew Morton, MD, Board-certified Family
Physician; Former Medical Corps, US Navy and Army Infantry Medic,
Desert Storm For the first time in history, too much food is making
us sick. The Modern American Diet (MAD) is expanding our waistlines
while starving and shrinking our brains. Rates of obesity and
depression have recently doubled, and though these epidemics are
closely linked, few experts are connecting the dots for the average
American. Using data from the rapidly changing fields of
neuroscience and nutrition, The Happiness Diet shows that over the
past several generations, small, seemingly insignificant changes to
our diet have stripped it of nutrients-like magnesium, vitamin B12,
iron, and vitamin D, as well as some very special fats-that are
essential for happy, well-balanced brains. These shifts also
explain the overabundance of mood-destroying foods in the average
American's diet and why they predispose most of us to excessive
weight gain. After a clear explanation of how we've all been led so
far astray, The Happiness Diet empowers the reader to steer clear
of this MAD way of life with simple, straightforward solutions,
including: * A list of foods to swear off * Shopping tips and
kitchen organization tricks * A compact healthy cookbook full of
brain-building recipes * Practical advice, meal plans, and more!
Graham and Ramsey guide you through these steps and then remake
your diet by doubling down on feel-good foods-even the all-American
burger. Praise for The Happiness Diet "Finally, a rock-solid,
reliable, informative, and entertaining book on how to eat your way
to health and happiness. Run-don't walk-to read and adopt The
Happiness Diet. This is the only diet book I've encountered that I
can actually recommend to patients without reservation."-Bonnie
Maslin, PhD, Psychologist and author of Picking Your Battles "A
lively, thorough, and iron-clad case for real food. You will never
eat an egg-white omelet or soy protein shake again."-Nina Planck,
author of Real Food and Real Food for Mother and Baby "The book
includes food lists, shopping tips, brain-building recipes, smart
slimming strategies, and other useful tools to lose weight and keep
the blues at bay."-AM New York
