In this accessible book, Gavin Kennedy takes a fresh look at Adam
Smith's moral philosophy and its links to his political economy and
his lectures on Jurisprudence. The book provides a new analysis of
Wealth of Nations , and argues that Adam Smith's intellectual
legacy was completely transformed in the Nineteenth and Twentieth
centuries by economists pursuing different agendas, to create ideas
and policies that Smith did not advocate. It also provides a new
explanation for the main mysteries about Smith's later life.
This book presents the authentic Adam Smith and explores his
underlying approach and radical thinking, aiming to re-establish
his original intentions. The book provides a crucial reminder of
how relevant Adam Smith was in his own time, and how relevant he
remains as we experience the worldwide spread of opulence
today.
Wildfires are a fact of life throughout many arid and semi-arid
regions, such as the American West. With growing population
pressures in these regions, human communities are increasingly
developing in so-called ???urban-wildland interface zones, ???
where severe fire driven ecosystems co-exist uneasily with humans
and their property. This edited volume addresses this problem???and
its potential solutions???from an interdisciplinary perceptive,
with contributions from authors in public policy, sociology,
economics, ecology, computer modeling, planning, and ecology. The
first section of the book addresses institutional and policy
aspects, including chapters on national fire policy in the United
States, local fire planning and policy, smart growth approaches to
planning in fire zones, and institutional roadblocks to fuels
management. The second section deals with economic aspects,
including chapters on the role of information and disclosure of
hazards in real estate markets, methods of underwriting fire
insurance, and the consequences of state-mandated fire insurers of
last resort. The third section deals with community level
involvement in fire management, addressing a wide range of issues
including models of community engagement, criteria for success, and
approaches for institutionalizing this process, both in the US and
abroad. The final section deals with management and ecology and
includes chapters on the predicted effects of climate change on
wildfire activity, new computer modeling tools for mitigating fire
risk, and complex institutional mechanisms behind large-fire
suppression in the US.

After 30 years of declining practice among psychiatrists,
psychotherapy is being increasingly recognized as a valuable tool
in psychiatric care. While this renewed appreciation offers hope
for the future, a serious challenge remains: There are alarmingly
few psychiatrists equipped as psychotherapy supervisors to help
train the next generation of psychiatrists. Encouraging
psychiatrists to consider stepping into this important role is what
makes Supervising Individual Psychotherapy such a timely and
indispensable resource. With a multipronged approach that combines
the theoretical and the practical, supported by illustrative
clinical vignettes, this guide focuses on four key areas: • The
process of supervisor development, including helpful tools for
building supervisory skills and fostering self-growth, practical
methods for establishing and maintaining a healthy supervisory
relationship, and a collection of vignettes to highlight the
supervisee's perspective. Also addressed are common ethical
questions that arise in the supervisory process. • Specific
techniques used in supervision, including how to establish and
monitor goals for supervision, provide supervision via
internet-mediated videoconferencing, and thoughtfully plan for the
termination of supervision. • Psychotherapy supervision for
specific populations and within various care settings, including
supervision of supportive therapy in hospital units and emergency
departments, cognitive-behavioral therapy, substance use disorder
treatment, and combination treatment of psychotherapy and
pharmacotherapy. Also discussed are the possible effects of the
supervisee's and the supervisor's race, gender identity, and sexual
preferenceorientation on the supervisory process. • Challenges
that may arise in supervision, including an examination of the
effects of marriage, divorce, illness, and death on the supervisory
dyad; the legal aspects of supervision (e.g., confidentiality,
medicolegal liability); and the risks of burnout in both the
supervisor and the supervisee. With a richness of detail organized
in an accessible and easy-to-reference format, this book clearly
covers the skills, capabilities, and qualities needed to provide
effective psychotherapy supervision—and is tailor-made for early-
and mid-career supervisors who are looking to develop and refine
their skills.

Overcoming fear, ambivalence, and inertia to act on behalf of self
or others can be difficult even for mental health clinicians who
are accustomed to helping patients overcome challenges. A
Psychiatrist's Guide to Advocacy explores the diverse definitions
of advocacy and helps to identify methods and opportunities for
advocacy by mental health practitioners. The editors argue for a
greater culture of advocacy among psychiatrists in order to effect
broad and lasting systemic and structural change. A noteworthy
example is the push for insurance coverage parity between mental
health and other medical care. However, legislative advocacy is
just one of the many types explored in the book; advocacy takes
many forms, including patient-level advocacy, organizational
advocacy, education and research as advocacy, and media-targeted
advocacy. Also addressed are specific issues of advocacy for
special populations, including children and families, older adults,
LGBTQ patients, and veterans. Taken together, these chapters
represent a practical toolkit for mental health advocacy in its
myriad forms. In prose both compelling and accessible, the volume *
Identifies five of the most pressing systemic problems in mental
health care (lack of access to quality payer-covered,
evidence-based mental health care; the psychiatry workforce
shortage; lack of parity for mental health care compared with other
forms of health care; the stigma against both consumers and
providers of treatment for mental disorders, including substance
use disorders; and high rates of physician burnout) and explains
how advocacy at different levels can address these issues. *
Describes the essential factors needed for effective advocacy, with
emphasis on pathways to mentorship, providing examples of what
integrating advocacy into the psychiatrist's career path looks like
and identifying strategies to encourage lifelong advocacy*
Delineates the advocacy needs of diverse patient populations,
including children, families, and older adults; LGBTQ, non-native,
and substance-using patients; veterans and military service
members; and more* Includes four substantive interviews with
advocacy role models who embody and embrace the advocate's mission,
expressed in actions and on platforms that are diverse and
illustrative* Includes learning objectives that tell readers what
they can expect to master by the end of each chapter, allowing for
focused reading and easy review A Psychiatrist's Guide to Advocacy
is a call for action and a blueprint for change, providing
clinicians with the foundation for recognizing their opportunities
and embracing their roles as advocates.
This monograph presents the current views, challenges and future
needs of educators from a global online exchange where educators
and researchers discuss the 21st century skills needed by students
and teachers. The three editors, who participated in the global
online research discussion group, also assumed the role of authors
to summarise, analyse and celebrate the myriad of ideas generated
in a topic thread that had well over a thousand responses from 26
countries. Through Comparative Analysis they then compared the
posters' ideas to some current big thinkers in education. This text
promotes teachers' voices from diverse disciplines and sectors who
are united in their desire for purposeful and radical change in how
teaching is carried out and what is taught. The text advocates
shifting power away from government control and standardisation
towards empowering teachers to guide and further develop the unique
talents of diverse individuals.

Conference on Social Computing, Behavioral-Cultural Modeling and
Prediction, SBP 2013, held in Washington, DC, USA in April 2013.
The total of 57 contributions, which consists of papers and
posters, included in this volume was carefully reviewed and
selected from 137 submissions. This conference is strongly
committed to multidisciplinarity, consistent with recent trends in
computational social science and related fields. The topics covered
are: behavioral science, health sciences, military science and
information science. There are also many papers that provide
methodological innovation as well as new domain-specific findings.
Western Europe, stagnant since the fall of Rome, showed signs of
economic resurgence in the mid-18th century. Adam Smith was excited
by the potential of this new era, and he was inspired to study the
changes in Britain's evolving political institutions, the decline
in the old verities of the church, the strengthening of the eternal
verities of human sympathy, the ever-widening knowledge of his age,
the momentous implications of the division of labour, the power of
exchange, and faster growth through capital accumulation and an
expanding labour force. This book presents the authentic Adam Smith
and explores his underlying approach and radical thinking, aiming
to re-establish his original intentions as articulated in his works
and correspondence, which have been distorted by modern
interpretations, assumptions and attributions. The book provides a
crucial reminder of how relevant Adam Smith was in his own time,
and how relevant he remains today in this era of globalisation.
Historic Homes of Minnesota is the engaging story of the evolution
of architectural styles in Minnesota from 1830 to 1914 -- from the
influence of the early French traders along the Mississippi and St
Croix to the emergence of the school of Frank Lloyd Wright. Through
photographs and colourfully informative text, internationally known
historian Roger Kennedy helps readers understand the unique styles
of Minnesota's first homes, including the Mower House in Arcola,
the first large house on the St. Croix; Alexander Ramsey's 'Mansion
House' in St Paul, influenced by Pennsylvania Dutch virtues; the
whimsical Charles C. Clement house in Fergus Falls, clearly Norse
in spirit; and the Purcell House in Minneapolis, a fine example of
the Prairie School design. On a broad plane these architectural
eras reflected social customs, politics, commerce, religion, and
literature. On a personal level they often revealed the national
origin and character of the families that made the house a home. In
short, this is in large measure a history of the people. Kennedy
has considered their heritage and traditions as carefully as he has
examined the architecture they created, and he offers a fresh,
holistic approach to the study of our state's great houses.

This book restores Aaron Burr to his place as a central figure in the founding of the American Republic. Abolitionist, proto-feminist, friend to such Indian leaders as Joseph Brant, Burr was personally acquainted with a wider range of Americans, and of the American continent, than any other Founder except George Washington. He contested for power with Hamilton and then with Jefferson on a continental scale. The book does not sentimentalize any of its three protagonists, neither does it derogate their extraordinary qualities. They were all great men, all flawed, and all three failed to achieve their full aspirations. But their struggles make for an epic tale.

Immerse yourself in the rich shades and textures of Tiziano
Vecellio (c. 1488-1576), commonly known as Titian, and the
figurehead of 16th-century Venetian painting. With his bold
approach to form and startling, opulent colors, Titian worked with
a number of prestigious commissions and left behind an astonishing
repertoire of portraits, mythological scenes, altarpieces, and
landscapes that remains one of the most important legacies of
Renaissance art. This dependable artist introduction traces
Titian's complete career and its trailblazing influence on
successive generations of artists, from Diego Velazquez to van
Dyck. From the rippling sensuality of Venus of Urbino (c.
1488-1576) to the airborne dynamism of Bacchus and Ariadne
(1520-1523), all the major works are here, charting the artist's
stylistic experimentation over time as well as his consistent and
unique ability to work across genres and to bring a defining new
level of emotional and spiritual aspect to his subjects. "Titian
has the finest talent and a very pleasant, vivacious manner." -
Michelangelo.
Religion and Public Life is a collection of papers delivered at a
conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of Msgr.
John A. Ryan, who was the most prominent and influential American
advocate of the Catholic social tradition in the first half of the
twentieth century. He was a rare combination of scholar, priest,
and political realist. Most of his career was spent in Washington,
D.C., where he was both a professor at the Catholic University of
America and a principal representative of the American bishops to
Congress. This collection serves as a fine introduction to Ryan's
thought as well as a survey of some of the more pressing current
issues in the Catholic social tradition.
