The brain stem and cerebellum are structures that have fascinated and puzzled physicians, anatomists, and physio- logists for centuries. Relatively small in volume compared to the much larger and more majestic human cerebrum, and hidden away in relative obscurity in the back of the head under the protection of the bony posterior fossa and the firm dural envelope, the tentorium cerebelli, these critical neural structures defied precise study during life until very recently. Recent advances in brain and vascular imaging and improved understanding of brain-stem reflex and tract functions and their measurement by electrophysiological techniques have presented an opportunity for clinicians and researchers to better study, during life, patients with stroke and other conditions that involve the brain stem and cere- bellum. A congress was held at the Neurology Clinic of the University in Mainz, April 4-5, 1992, during which clinicians and researchers reported and discussed modern topical diagnosis of diseases of the brain stem and cere- bellum. This volume represents the edited proceedings of that congress. Early information about brain stem anatomy and func- tions came from anatomical studies by Ludwig Turk, Paul Flechsig, Rudolph von K6lliker, Karl Burdach, Vladimir Bekterew, and Benedikt Stilling, among others, all working in Germany during the middle years of the nineteenth century. Johann Reil, a German anatomist, in the begin- ning of the nineteenth century had described the structure and some functions of the cerebellum which he called the little brain ("Kleinhirn").

Experts on elementary-particle physics, both theorists and experimentalists, met to present their latest results on the various aspects of HERA physics, specifically, the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA and the collaborations at LEP and the Tevatron were presented. The topics included: proton structure function; polarized "ep" scattering; final states in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), with special emphasis on jet production at low x, power corrections in DIS, soft particle production, and instanton effects; photon structure function; photoproduction of jets and hadrons; heavy-flavour and charmonium production; elastic and diffractive ep scattering; and new physics at HERA.

Von den moglichen Wegen bakterieller Wundver- unreinigung stellt die aerogene Kontamination ein blsher noch mcht befnedlgend gelostes Problem dar. Dies gilt auch flir moderne Operationssale mIt konventlOnel- len Beltiftungssystemen. Nachdem "Reme Raume" slch langst in der pharmazeutischen und elektrom- schen Industrie bewahrt hatten, wo eine Staubfreiheit durch raschen Abtransport von Partlkeln das erwlinschte Ziel darstellte, muBte eine Ubertragung dieses Prinzips in verschledene Bereiche der Medizm, msbesondere aber der operatlven DIsziphnen, mIt dem Ziel emer weltgehenden Kelmverminderung erfolgverspre- chend erscheinen, da Mlkroorgamsmen das glelche bewegungsphyslkahsche Ver- halten wie Staubtedchen aufwelsen. You have either suffered from episodes of depression, mild or maybe paralyzing, if not perhaps you know someone who is currently suffering. This book will help you understand the illness and the best way to provide support for your friend or relative. And this book is my effort at chipping away at the stigma of mental illness. It is the 21st century yet 2nd century thinking persists. Thousands of people suffer silently and needlessly because of the stigma. Today we are blessed with effective treatments for mild chronic depression, major depressive episodes, and depression related to bipolar disorder, they are of no value to someone who avoids seeking treatment. Much work remains to be done to completely erase all vestiges of the stigma. This book tells my personal battle with depression, and I promise it will inspire you and guide you if you are currently depressed. It will provide hope if you feel hopeless because I have been there and I have felt the pain and despair. Ultimately my diagnosis was "bipolar disorder" and there is much I am anxious to share about that as well.

The three boys in the story, "Harmony Hollow," are lifetime friends. Two are twelve and one is thirteen. Their lives are unique as for three months each year they live with their parents on a mountain in Washington state. Their fathers work for the forest service. Being twelve and thirteen they feel they are old enough to do the one thing they have wanted to do for the past couple of years. They know their parents would never, ever agree to let them visit this deep, deep valley they call Harmony Hollow. Telling their parents they were going camping at a campground for a week, they instead have their backpacks packed to explore the place they call Harmony Hollow. Their plans complete, they start down into this almost three-mile deep valley between two mountain ranges. Not a lot is known about this area they call Harmony Hollow. The three boys find that their visit to to "Harmony Hollow" becomes a bigger adventure than they could even imagine.
