Barry G. Silverman, Ashlesha Jain, Ajita Ichalkaranje
R2,804 Discovery Miles 28 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This compendium brings together leading researchers in the fields of Intelligent Systems and healthcare aiming at medical engineers, healthcare managers and computer scientists worldwide. This book is an overview of intelligent paradigms and strategic investments that might payoff for the healthcare enterprise. Specifically, the reader will get ideas for efficiency enhancements for improving effectiveness and quality of care and for increasing patient safety. "Advanced Intelligent Paradigms in Healthcare" straddles technologic topics from DNA processing and automating medical second opinions in the lab, to telemedicine and chat spaces for rural patient outreach, among many others. In terms of management concerns, this book also explores systems approaches such as automated clinical guidelines, institutional workflow management, and best practices and lessons learned with actual applications.

There is an enormous sense of excitement in the communities of cancer research and cancer care as we move into the middle third of the ?rst decade of the 21st century. For the ?rst time, there is a true sense of c- ?dence that the tools provided by the human genome project will enable cancer researchers to crack the code of genomic abnormalities that allow tumor cells to live within the body and provide highly speci?c, virtually non-toxic therapies for the eradication, or at least ?rm control of human cancers. There is also good reason to hope that these same lines of inquiry will yield better tests for screening, early detection, and prev- tion of progression beyond curability. While these developments provide a legitimate basis for much op- mism, many patients will continue to develop cancers and suffer from their debilitating effects, even as research moves ahead. For these in- viduals, it is imperative that the cancer ?eld make the best possible use of the tools available to provide present day cancer patients with the best chances for cure, effective palliation, or, at the very least, relief from symptoms caused by acute intercurrent complications of cancer. A modality that has emerged as a very useful approach to at least some of these goals is tumor ablation by the use of physical or physiochemical approache

R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Research on multi-agent systems has provided a promising technology for implementing cognitive intelligent non-playing characters. However, the technologies used in game engines and multi-agent platforms are not readily compatible due to some inherent differences in concerns. Where game engines focus on real-time aspects and thus propagate efficiency and central control, multi-agent platforms assume autonomy of the agents. Increased autonomy and intelligence may offer benefits for a more compelling gameplay and may even be necessary for serious games. However, problems occur when current game design techniques are used to incorporate state-of-the-art multi-agent system technology. A very similar argument can be given for agent-based (social) simulation.

This volume contains the papers presented at AGS 2009, the First International Workshop on Agents for Games and Simulations, held in Budapest on May 11, 2009. The focus of the workshop was on the particular challenges facing those using agent technology for games and simulations, with topics covering the technical, conceptual and design aspects of the field.

R2,375 Discovery Miles 23 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sharing the distinguished reputation of its companion text, "Clinical Anesthesia, Seventh Edition, " this completely revised edition of "Review of Clinical Anesthesia "provides an effective and comprehensive review in preparation of written and oral exams. With the intense volume of information available today, trying to keep up with what's new and relevant can overwhelm students and professionals alike. This text gives you the means to stop and review what you've learned with a sense of context and perspective. The multiple-choice questions in this text can be used as a means of self-assessment before taking a written examination. Additionally, the book may be of even greater benefit if it is incorporated throughout one's studies; a pretest will help the novice as well as the expert focus his or her reading; a post-test will allow one to assess self-mastery of the most relevant material.

Modern Instrumentation - A Computer Approach (Hardcover): G. Silverman, H Silver Modern Instrumentation - A Computer Approach (Hardcover)
G. Silverman, H Silver
R4,099 Discovery Miles 40 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Modern science and engineering relies heavily on understanding computer hardware and software in order to make effective use of these tools in the laboratory and industrial environments. The authors of Modern Instrumentation: A Computer Approach have succeeded in producing a highly readable source that will serve both newcomers to the field as well as experienced professionals.
Including both fundamentals and applications, the book first describes the role of the computer in instrument systems and provides numerous practical examples. The second part of the book explores specific software packages and their capabilities for applications such as, instrument design and simulation, data acquisition, data processing, and the potential of artificial intelligence in instrument design.
Because of the full integration of theory with practical applications of leading software packages, this book is an extremely useful reference for those who use computer-based instrument technology for data acquisition and who are involved with hardware or software development for laboratory and process control.

The Batterer as Parent - Addressing the Impact of Domestic Violence on Family Dynamics (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition):... The Batterer as Parent - Addressing the Impact of Domestic Violence on Family Dynamics (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
R.Lundy Bancroft, Jay G. Silverman, Daniel Ritchie
R3,706 Discovery Miles 37 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Moving beyond the narrow clinical perspective sometimes applied to viewing the emotional and developmental risks to battered children, The Batterer as Parent: Addressing the Impact of Domestic Violence on Family Dynamics, Second Edition offers a view that takes into account the complex ways in which a batterer's abusive and controlling behaviors are woven into the fabric of daily life. This book is a guide for therapists, child protective workers, family and juvenile court personnel, and other human service providers in addressing the complex impact that batterers-specifically, male batterers of a domestic partner when there are children in the household-have on family functioning. In addition to providing an understanding of batterers as parents and family members, the book also supplies clearly delineated approaches to such practice issues as assessing risk to children (including perpetrating incest), parenting issues in child custody and visitation evaluation, and impact on children's therapeutic process and family functioning in child protective practice.
