This book explores the current state of lndonesian education. There appear to be few distinctive images of education in Indonesia that are widely known internationally. But this is not because nothing is happening. The past decade has seen major trends in the structure of the Indonesian education system and in schooling trajectories of lndonesia's children and adolescents. It has also seen major policy discussions and initiatives. Over the same period, the country saw the administration of primary and secondary levels decentralised to the regional government, introduction of the new paradigm of school-based management, and public spending on education required to reach one-fifth of total government spending. But while enrolment rates at all levels continue to increase, quality remains low and has not improved, and the tertiary education sector continues to experience issues with autonomy and unsatisfactory performance. In Indonesia, as elsewhere in Asia, education will inevitably play a key role in the trajectory of national development as the 21"" century unfolds. Aside from World Bank reports, three does not appear to be any volume that provides a wide-ranging comprehensive coverage of the Indonesian educational situation and the issues it faces. Therefore, this book fills an important gap and, as such, potentially has a wide readership.

Urbanization is a key process in developing countries. Within the next decade over 50 per cent of the world's population will inhabit urban areas and the majority of this growth is concentrated in developing countries. Analysing data for four large countries, this volume focuses on the relationship between economic change and urban growth. Specifically the authors examine the continued growth of industrial employment at the expense of the agricultural sector, the impact of government-controlled regional and industrial policy and the role of migration in response to employment opportunities. There are also important chapters on government responses to the lack of basic infrastructure, and the resulting negative impact on human welfare, in the cities. The volume's coherence results from the cross-country comparisons made by the authors and the conclusions that are not geographically restricted but have potential applications, by urban planners, in all developing countries.

Southeast Asia contains four urban conglomerates of the sort that this study characterizes as Mega-Urban Regions - Jakarta, Manila, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh. These locations are examined in this book, along with Taipei and Shanghai. Because the administrative boundaries of the cities at the core of these zones do not include the entire urban area, the significance of the broader urban community has largely escaped scholarly attention. The authors base their analysis on actual agglomeration size rather than administrative boundaries, and draw on unpublished census data to study the dynamics of these massive urban zones, considering area and population size as well as social and demographic patterns of change in core, inner and outer zones. They conclude that these mega-urban regions continue to increase their share of national populations, and zones immediately beyond the official metropolitan boundaries are where the most dramatic changes are occurring.
