As anti-globalization and geopolitical tensions continue to rise, the use of Local Content Requirements (LCRs) around the world has become more noticeable than ever before. The reasons for adopting LCRs range from ensuring domestic supply availability, job creation, increasing value added, to safeguarding national security. Ing and Grossman examine country-specific as well as firm-product level exercises to explain how LCRs reduce fair competition, resulting in lower trade and productivity, which ultimately lowers world economic output and overall human welfare. Countries around the world are investigated with specific attention to the US, China, Indonesia, and resource-intensive countries, including mining-intensive ones. The book also presents product and firm level analyses, answering the question of why countries adopted LCRs and how LCRs actually affect the world economy. A useful resource that will interest policymakers, researchers and advanced undergraduates interested in international trade, industrial policy, political economy, labour economics, and development economics.
Ballistics comparison tests performed on bullets recovered from several murders indicate that they were fired from the same gun - but one that could not possibly have been used, because during each time the lethal shots were fired, the weapon was in the custody of the authorities. District Attorney Myra Scot Sharp (attorney Peter Sharp's bitter ex-wife) appoints a special prosecuting investigator, but when she and all the other adults involved fail to solve this mystery, little Suzi B. is called in for assistance and tries to prove that her amazing theory about who the murderer is, even though it contradicts the opinions of every police agency involved. Is Suzi right or wrong this time? You'll be as surprised as Peter, Myra, and the police are when Suzi conducts an experiment on the boat that will determine the innocence or guilt of the person that she suspects is guilty.
There's a new detective in town, and aside from the fact that she's only 13 years old and less than 4 feet tall, her help in solving crimes for her legal guardian attorney Peter Sharp has gotten her the respect of local law enforcement agencies. She's so good at it, that she thinks it's finally time for her to go out on her own by accepting cases not being handled by Peter's law firm. This is her second solo detective attempt - solving a problem that's plaguing the District Attorney, who just happens to be her close friend, Peter Sharp's ex-wife. While working on the case, a friend of hers met an untimely death, so she starts hatching a plan to capture the murderer and his entire gang of criminals all by herself. Having learned a lesson from her last adventure, when she was rescued by a SWAT team, to avoid too much danger this time she enlists the help of Bernie, her huge Saint Bernard. When her plan starts to come together, you'll be sitting on the edge of your seat just like the police helplessly watching on TV monitors, as Suzi tries to pull of what nobody's ever done before... without getting murdered while doing it. If you're a fan of crime-solving, you'll enjoy trying to match wits with this kid, and seeing if you can figure out what's going on before the adults involved that she constantly amazes. If you like the way she operates, you'll also get a kick out of reading about her other exploits in the "Peter Sharp Legal Mystery" series.
A man calls the police to report that he saw what he believes to be some gun flashes in the window of an apartment near his boat. When the police respond to the call they discover two dead men who look like they shot each other, and the CSI and medical examiner agree that it was a shoot-out... that they both won. The police and District Attorney can't find any motive or evidence of anyone else being involved, so they both close their files on this mutual-murder of two men who have never seen each other before, and are writing it off as a burglary gone bad... until Suzi B. reads the police report and after also noticing a Suzi manages to have the coroner call for a formal inquest hearing, at which time she promises to prove that someone has committed perjury and that the double-murder case should be re-opened. In order to prove that a witness has lied, Suzi must enlist the help of Jack Bibberman, the law firm's top investigator, Stuart Schwartzman, a friend and client who also owns an aerial photography company, and also an expert from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, who might provide Suzi with the statistical information she needs to crack this case. Peter ex-wife Myra, the county's elected District Attorney is also in the picture this time, but for once she's on Suzi's side, but still doesn't know what's going to happen at the inquest.

There are only 34 official Rules of Golf, but it takes more than 20,000 words to make them unintelligible enough so that most golfers cannot understand them properly... so this book doesn't even try. Instead, "GOLF RULES: How to NOT Win a Tournament" lays out many of the ways that pro golfers and others have found to be the correct way to receive penalty strokes and/or get disqualified. Included are numerous bone-headed mistakes that golfers you'll recognize have made, plus humorous golf quotes, an index of the actual rules, some history about the game, plus the author's allegedly witty comments about the game - including his suggestion for designing a perfect game of golf in which no errors (either intentional or unintentional) can be made. This book is an excellent gift for any golfer in the family (or the ex-family), and is a perfect read for any plane or train trip. Written by Gene Grossman, author of the popular Peter Sharp Legal Mystery Series, when reading this book, one will understand why Gene sees so many mysteries in the game of golf.
The one attorney that rubs Peter and Suzi the wrong way most is Mister Morris Arthur, and this time he commits what our protagonists feel is the worst offense: getting one of them in trouble with the law. They all feel that Arthur's actions have gone unpunished for a previous crime, and he is on the verge of succeeding in repeating the act in another crime - and must be stopped. The secret to stopping Morris Arthur is by tricking him and his clever attorney into painting themselves into a corner in a trial... a position from which there is no favorable way out. You will enjoy the give-and-take dialogue and legal maneuvering of District Attorney Myra Scot Sharp and Morris Arthur's attorney during a civil trial that Myra hopes will result in forcing Arthur to admit his committing of two crimes that everyone thinks he is innocent of.
If you haven't been fascinated by her brilliant Sherlock Holmes type of logic in the first 15 Peter Sharp Legal Mysteries, then now's your chance to see what little Suzi can do when she's out on her own... well, almost her own. She still lives on a luxurious yacht in Marina del Rey California with her legal Guardian, attorney Peter Sharp; and she still has her trusted bodyguard Bernie, a huge Saint Bernard - but for this adventure she doesn't want to see the adults take advantage of her superior computer skills and grab all the credit for solving the crimes, like they have in the first 15 books that chronicled Peter Sharp's high-profile criminal cases. The assignment she has given herself for this first solo adventure is to figure out the identity of a murderous serial church bomber, set up a trap for him, and have the press handy when she actually attempts a citizens' arrest, with the assist of local law enforcement. At least that's the plan. This would be an ambitious goal for an experienced team of sworn peace officers, but she believes she can pull it off with only the help of some people that she has become acquainted with in her work for attorney Peter Sharp: but this time, she will be giving out the assignments and making all the decisions. To accomplish her chosen task she must make some decisions that slightly inconvenience many of the adults she usually is quite friendly with: attorney Peter Sharp's yacht is seized by the Department of Homeland Security, District Attorney Myra Scot Sharp (Peter's bitter ex-wife) has her home computers seized by the U.S. Marshal's Office, and her boyfriend's mother is believed to be a kidnap victim. Aside from these few minor setbacks, Suzi remains determined to complete her assignment and bring this criminal to justice, notwithstanding the trail of misfortune that her closest friends are forced to endure, while she forges ahead with only one goal in mind: to put the bad guy away. And by the way, there's a large reward being offered for information leading to this criminal's arrest and conviction, but far be it from us to even hint that Suzi might be considering this monetary incentive, to serve society in the best way she can. So - sit back and fasten your seatbelt, because this first Suzi B. Mystery is about to take off, and if you can handle the turbulence along the way, you may be in better shape to survive the roller-coaster ending when the entire city is put on alert to find this little detective, as the chase to catch the bad guy is joined by several local and federal law enforcement departments who all collide at one of the busiest places in Los Angeles.
In this tenth Peter Sharp Legal Mystery, Peter faces a double task: defending a person who is charged with murder, and also trying to locate the missing victim, who was allegedly killed in a completely locked room. Somewhere behind the tangled mess of a down-ward-spiraling celebrity starlet, a battling married couple, a missing currency trader and a dis-appearing corpse, attorney Peter Sharp and his legal ward Suzi must find where the truth lies. As in the past, while Peter's client's trial nears, Suzi has failed to come up with any workable solution that can save Peter from certain defeat and humiliation in court. You'll be sitting on the edge of your chair as you see the courtroom drama that takes place during the last few minutes of the trial.
In this third Adventure, Attorney Peter Sharp is retained to represent a man accused of murder by the planting of bombs in vehicles. The client is also suspected of being part of a conspiracy to assassinate the President of the United States in an upcoming Fourth of July parade. With the assistance of his legal ward Suzi, Peter cracks the case, identifies the real murderer, and at the same time solves the mystery of a dead body found in his friend Stuart's automobile trunk... all while falling for a lesbian lawyer, winning a Will contest, breaking up a stolen car ring 4,000 miles away, and battling with his ex-wife, who has been elected to the office of District Attorney. In the adventure's hectic finale, Suzi manages to get Bernie, her huge Saint Bernard into a courtroom, where she makes her first official court appearance, holds her first press conference, and becomes a local television hero.
Peter Sharp isn't your usual type of attorney unless you consider getting divorced, disbarred, thrown out of your house, and disgraced, all normal for a practicing lawyer. In this first of the series, we join Peter while he tries to find out who framed him, why his wife threw him out, and how to make ends meet. He also gets involved with a case of Negligent Nymphomania, a ground-breaking new tort cause of action Peter finds himself drawn into. Making matters worse is the fact that his sole source of income - a former classmate, winds up dead; the man accused of murder by jealousy winds up his romantic rival, and Peter winds up getting appointed legal guardian of a precocious 12-year old girl who tries to solve the crimes before Peter and the police can.
In this 15th adventure of the series, Peter Sharp's privacy has been invaded: a person with a grudge against him knows that Peter is a devout fan of mysteries, especially those featuring Sherlock Holmes... and some events take place in banks that have traces of elements coinciding with the characters and occurrences in the Holmes stories, but the FBI doesn't think they merit investigation, so they bounce the matters down to offices of the Los Angeles District Attorney, who is Peter's ex-wife Myra, who asks Peter to look into these matters to determine whether or not these events are merely the jokes of some pranksters, or if they are hints of a serious upcoming crime that will take place. If you have ever enjoyed a Sherlock Holmes mystery, you'll enjoy reading about this gang weaves several of them into this adventure. This is the first adventure in which Peter's legal ward Suzi's huge Saint Bernard may accidentally provide information that can solve this case. You'll also enjoy trying to match wits with little Suzi (and her dog) in this case.
More than half way back from Catalina Island on his boat, a man makes a ship-to-shore S.O.S. radio call to the Marina del Rey Coast Guard, but before he can describe his emergency, a gun is heard being fired on his boat and the transmission ends. When a crew lowered from the the Coast Guard helicopter board his boat and find his body, there is no other person on the boat... and no way that any other person could have boarded his boat going 30 miles an hour, and gotten away from the speeding boat. Attorney Peter Sharp's ex-wife (the recently-elected District Attorney) reluctantly asks Peter and his 12-year-old genius legal ward Suzi to assist them in determining if this was suicide or murder... and if murder, how it was accomplished. This is one of the most baffling cases that Peter and Suzi have ever tackled, and the final answer surprises everyone involved. Author Gene Grossman hasn't created a stumper like this since his adventure #7, the Magician's Legacy, because in many ways this story also contains the elements of a successful 'locked-room' mystery. The readers are invited to match wits with Suzi, to see if they can solve the mystery before she does.
Successful author Gene Grossman admits to having made almost every mistake possible during his writing career, and wants this book to help new writers from following in his mis-footsteps when trying to write their first novel. He discusses the benefits that new technology offers, and his 20 chapters contain much valuable information on writing/publishing/distribution tips and advice about agents, Amazon, the Internet, POD, author/internet scams, cover and interior design, character arcs, tense shifts and much more. This is the perfect book for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel. It tells you how to start, and how to finish, and covers all the things a beginning writer should avoid - from crooked agents, non-publishers, phony writing contests, to horror stories that other authors and publishers have encountered. This book will help you avoid the problems and bad practices that it took him years learn about the hard way, and will save you years of aggravation and thousands of dollars.
This is the perfect book for any law student or new law firm or public government attorney, and should be required reading for any new admittee before making that first court appearance. It separates what really goes on in the office and in court from what is seen on the popular law-oriented shows on television. The 'do' and 'don't do' information in this book isn't in any law school textbook: it can only be learned here, or the hard way, by painful personal experiences. Author Gene Grossman compiled the material in this book from many interviews with experienced judges, trial lawyers, law firm partners and even some jurors.
This book is ground breaking not because of what it has, but what it doesn't have: No complicated drawings; no mathematics problems; no astronomical talk; no big words you've never heard of. Sailor-author Gene Grossman finally breaks this wonderful subject down into plain English and explains it in such a way that you will no longer have any excuse to claim that you know nothing about the valuable boater's subject of Celestial Navigation. This book was inspired by Gene's DVD program of the same title, which has gained worldwide popularity and is being used the the Navy, Coast Guard and sailing schools all over the world.
Gene Grossman created the popular 15-book series of Peter Sharp Legal Mysteries, featuring an adorable little 12-year-old Chinese girl named Suzi, attorney Peter Sharp's legal ward. If you've enjoyed reading mysteries and want to try your hand at creating a series on your own, you will find this book a valuable aid, because it reveals Gene's thought processes as he created the series, and provides you with valuable information that will help you with your own writing efforts. Also included are some 'insider' tips on printing, marketing, distribution, and much, much more. The book also contains the first chapters from all fourteen of the Peter Sharp Legal Mysteries, so you can have some idea of how to 'grab' a reader's attention while they're browsing in a bookstore.
