The New Mediterranean Democracies - Regime Transition in Spain, Greece and Portugal (Paperback): Geoffrey Pridham The New Mediterranean Democracies - Regime Transition in Spain, Greece and Portugal (Paperback)
Geoffrey Pridham
R1,019 Discovery Miles 10 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume, first published in 1984, discusses the viability of applying the 'Mediterranean model' to three countries that were transitioning to democracy, - Spain, Greece and Portugal - combining both comparative and national case-study approaches. In particular, Spain, Greece and Portugal offer comparable examples of the problems of establishing new democratic systems within relatively unstable and economically less developed environments. This title applies different theories of regime transition to the countries in question. This volume will be of interest to students of politics.

The Dynamics of Democratization - A Comparative Approach (Hardcover): Geoffrey Pridham The Dynamics of Democratization - A Comparative Approach (Hardcover)
Geoffrey Pridham
R6,194 Discovery Miles 61 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A systematic comparison of three cases of democratization and regime transformation in Europe since 1945 (post-war Italy and West Germany; Southern Europe from the mid-1970s; and Eastern Europe in the 1990s), this book highlights diversities of historical context, political experience, democratic traditions, economic development, and cultural background.

Unlike the majority of literature on the subject, this book views the democratization process as a whole, not just as either democratic transition or subsequent regime consolidation. Economic, state-building, or other forms of transformation are included where relevant.

Securing Democracy - Political Parties and Democratic Consolidation in Southern Europe (Paperback): Geoffrey Pridham Securing Democracy - Political Parties and Democratic Consolidation in Southern Europe (Paperback)
Geoffrey Pridham
R795 Discovery Miles 7 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When this book first published in 1990, several 'new' democracies were emerging in Southern Europe. Italy, Portugal, Spain and Greece were generally seen as conforming to the western European model of liberal democracy. But the process of democratization is a gradual one, and each national democracy is moulded by its own political, social, and economic characteristics. In particular, the active role of national political parties is of prime importance. The contributors to this volume focus on party systems in the democracies of Greece, Spain and Portugal since the end of their authoritarian regimes, and on Italy in the post-war period. This title will be of interest to students of politics, European Studies, and development studies.

In this book, first published in 1981, the authors trace and analyse the growth of transnational party co-operation and the factors important to it during the years before and immediately following direct elections. They recognise three major dimensions of transnational co-operation: the Euro-parliamentary groups; the new European party federations; and the national party frameworks in the member states. This title will be of interest to academics and students concerned with European affairs.

Geoffrey Pridham
R1,160 Discovery Miles 11 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This study, first published in 1981, focuses on a single region of Italy - Tuscany, and examines the internal and external relationships of the parties, their evolution and their roles in the years 1975-1980. Looking in depth and detail at the activity of the parties in Tuscany, the book identifies and examines different factors of change and continuity and comes to the conclusion that there has been significant movement in the political positions and strengths of the respective parties as well as in their strategic courses and inter-relationships. This volume has a particular importance due to the questioning of many previously held assumptions of the country's party system in the light of political and socio-economic change during the 1970's. This title will be of interest to students of European politics.

The first part of the book looks at the development of the CDU/CSU. The second part focuses on its composition and structure and considers such aspects as its organisation, membership, auxiliary organisations and electoral appeal and campaigns. A separate chapter deals with the CSU's relationship with the CDU, its leadership and its organisation.

Experimenting With Democracy - Regime Change in the Balkans (Hardcover, New): Tom Gallagher, Geoffrey Pridham Experimenting With Democracy - Regime Change in the Balkans (Hardcover, New)
Tom Gallagher, Geoffrey Pridham
R4,317 Discovery Miles 43 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The chronic instability in the Balkan States of South East Europe has prevented the end of the Cold War becoming an era of genuine peace in Europe. Against a background of competing nationalisms, economic decline, the resilience of authoritarianism, it is easy to forget that there have been experiments with democracy have taken place since 1990 with relative success. Now, for the first time, the region is genuinely engaging with open politics; its outcome will determine whether the Balkans can cease being a byword for instability, and an area whose shock-waves have disturbed the peace of Europe on many occasions.
Democratisation in the Balkans explores the obstacles impeding the consolidation of democracy, and even preventing a state like Serbia from going very far down the democratic road. Social scientists with expert knowledge of each of the Balkan states, and their political and economic systems, examine why progress in building free institutions has been slow compared to that of Central Europe, the Iberian peninsula and Latin America.

Geoffrey Pridham; Introduction by Geoffrey Pridham, Eric Herring, George Sanford; Edited by Eric Herring, …
R6,180 Discovery Miles 61 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The focus of this work is the international dimension of democratization in eastern Europe. Coverage of this theme includes: the role of national governments and international organizations; the behaviour of non-state actors such as entrepreneurs and ethnic groups with cross-border allegiances; unintentional effects, such as those of market forces; and deliberate attempts to exercise influence, such as the use of trade barriers.;The work argues that international factors have been a principal component of, and not always favourable to, democratization in eastern Europe. It examines in turn comparative perspectives, theories of democracy and democratization, problems on international security - including the collapse of Yugoslavia - and the roles of the EU and the former USSR. Also considered are the cases of the Czech Repbulic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland.

Stabilising Fragile Democracies - New Party Systems in Southern and Eastern Europe (Hardcover): Paul Lewis, Geoffrey Pridham Stabilising Fragile Democracies - New Party Systems in Southern and Eastern Europe (Hardcover)
Paul Lewis, Geoffrey Pridham
R4,315 Discovery Miles 43 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Political Parties and the Transition to Democracy" provides a systematic comparison of the democratic transitions in both Eastern and Southern Europe. Political Parties often play a crucial role in the process of democratization and the establishment of new parliamentary democracies. They often form as a result of opposition to a previous authoritarian regime and their performance during the transition to democracy can give a good indication as to the nature of, and prospects for, the new democracy.
Four main themes concerning the role of parties are examined - "coping with the past" (party identities and inheritances); the formation and performance of new democratic political elites; parties and alliances/coalitions; and their electoral behavior. These themes are discussed in comparative perspective with the aid of four case studies from both Southern and Eastern Europe. The countries covered include Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Hungary, Romania, Poland and Bulgaria.
Democratization is a very complex process because it operates on many levels; By studying political parties this book focuses on an area that links many of the levels. "Political Parties and the Transition of Democracy" makes sense of democratization and the role of parties in that process.

Democratization in Eastern Europe (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Geoffrey Pridham, Tatu Vanhanen Democratization in Eastern Europe (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Geoffrey Pridham, Tatu Vanhanen
R1,270 Discovery Miles 12 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The sudden and dramatic democratization of Eastern Europe during 1989-90 was something that had not been predicted by political scientists. This text is a response to those events, in that it seeks to provide some theoretical explanations for the process of democratization in Eastern Europe and compare that experience with the democratic transitions experienced in other parts of the world. The contributions focus on the causal factors of democratization and are organized into three main sections. In the first, the process of democratization is analyzed from the domestic perspective of the countries concerned and this approach includes the investigation of long-term structural changes and historical factors. In the second, attention is focused on the struggles of social and political structures and on the emergence of multi-party and new electoral systems. The final part investigates how far democratization was influenced by external factors and considers in particular the role of reform in the Soviet Union under Gorbachev and the appeal of Western social, political and economic systems.

Political Parties and Coalitional Behaviour in Italy (Hardcover): Geoffrey Pridham Political Parties and Coalitional Behaviour in Italy (Hardcover)
Geoffrey Pridham
R3,877 Discovery Miles 38 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Coalitional behaviour is central to the Italian system of government but has been largely neglected by research. As a result, coalitions in post-war Italy have been viewed as simply unstable, short-lived and incohesive. In this book, the author corrects this one-sidedness by analysing Italian coalition politics as a continuous and dynamic process. His comprehensive, interpretative approach takes account of other new developments in coalition studies and relates his subject both to the literature on Italian politics and to the comparative study of party systems in liberal democracies. An introductory section places Italian coalitional behaviour in a theoretical and comparative context. This inductive framework is then used as a reference for examining the historical, institutional, motivational, internal, socio-political andenvironmental dimensions of the phenomenon.

Coalitional Behaviour in Theory and Practice - An Inductive Model for Western Europe (Paperback): Geoffrey Pridham Coalitional Behaviour in Theory and Practice - An Inductive Model for Western Europe (Paperback)
Geoffrey Pridham
R929 Discovery Miles 9 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book, first published in 1986, takes a fresh look at coalition theory in the light of the European coalition experience. This volume attempts to marry theory and practice by avoiding the pure abstraction of the formal coalition theories on the one hand and the over-descriptiveness of some of the empirical work on the other. This volume of theoretical or comparative chapters and national case-studies presents and applies an inductive model for coalitional behaviour in the form of a multi-dimensional framework based on the hypothesis of political parties as the central actors in coalition politics. In doing so, it aims at encouraging a fresh direction in coalition research by focusing on coalitional behaviour as a continuous and dynamic process rather than one confined to the formation of coalitions, as well as by overcoming the isolation of coalition studies.

Over the last thirty years, the European Union has created a system of environmental governance in Europe. With a large number of legislative measures, the EU's environmental policy is broad in scope, extensive in detail and often stringent in effect. Environmental governance also extends to the ways in which decision making on environmental policy has become institutionalized within Europe, both at the level of the EU itself and in the practices of the member states. This work seeks to understand this new system of environmental governance both at the European level and at the level of member states. It argues that the system is multi-level, horizontally complex, evolving and incomplete. Locating developments at the European level in theories of European integration, it goes on to examine the extent of convergence and divergence in environmental policy among six member states: Germany, Spain, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK. It then looks at the operation of the system of environmental governance through an examination of policy case studies before examining the wider political significance of these developments.
