The region of Central and Eastern Europe has a rich and long history in cart- raphy. This book focuses on the contemporary activities in all major realms of cartography in Central and Eastern Europe. It covers aspects of theoretical, topographical, thematic and multimedia cartography, which have been presented at the frst Symposium on Cartography for Central and Eastern Europe, which took place from February 16th to 17th, 2009 in Vienna, Austria and was organized by the International Cartographic Association (ICA) and the Vienna University of Technology. The symposium's aim was to bring together cartographers, GI scientists and those working in related disciplines from CEE with the goal of offering a platform for discussion and exchange and stimulation of joined projects. About 130 scientists from 19 countries followed the invitation and visited Vienna, Austria. A selection of fully reviewed contributions is edited in this book and is meant as a mirror of the wide range of activities in the realm of cartography in this region. This meeting brought together cartographers who were interested in the design and aesthetics elements of cartography and artists who use maps as the basis for their art or who incorporate place and space in their expressions. The outcome of bringing together these like minds culminated in a wonderful event, spanning three evenings and two days in the Austrian capital. Papers, exhi- tions and installations provided a forum for appreciating the endeavors of artists and cartographers and their representations of geography. As well as indulging in an expansive and expressive occasion attendees were able to re? ect on their own work and discuss similar elements in each other's work. It also allowed cartographers and artists to discuss the potential for collaboration in future research and development. To recognise the signi? cance of this event, paper authors were invited to further develop their work and contribute chapters to this book. We believe that this book marks both a signi? cant occasion in Vienna and a starting point for future collabo- tive efforts between artists and cartographers. Multimedia Cartography provides a contemporary overview of the issues related to multimedia cartography and the design and production elements that are unique to this area of mapping. Volume 21 of the series "Susswasserflora/Freshwater Flora of Central Europe" describes the aquatic fungi. The present Part 21/1 deals with freshwater lichens (symbiotic associations of a fungus with a photosynthetic partner, usually green algae or cyanobacteria), which can be found in most running waterbodies with clean water and stable bedrocks, but some species are also characteristic for moderately polluted rivers and lake margins. The freshwater lichen flora has a huge potential for bioindication of silting, bedrock stability, constancy of inundation and acidification. Many species are in need for conservation efforts, but due to the missing of appropiate tools which facilitate the determination of these organisms, they have only rarely been part of inventories of freshwater bioma so far. Many freshwater lichens are representatives of genera with many species, which have been considered as taxonomically highly problematic.

Intensive research efforts during the last decades have increased the knowledge on the species circumscriptions in most of these critical genera, but a modern synopsis of these new developments, including the results of molecular studies was still missing for Central Europe. With less than 100 species, freshwater lichens are a rather small but systematically highly heterogenous group of specialized fungi which konvergently adopted an amphibious lifestyle. They are representatives of several non related orders of Ascomycota. The heterogeneous origin of freshwater lichens made their determination even more difficult, due to the fact that the environmentalist had to use keys which include all species of a given area. These are not only the rather few taxa relevant for freshwater inventories but also a plentidud of terrestrial and epiphytic taxa which never will be met in freshwater habitats. Keys exclusively dedicated to the freshwater representatives were available only for selected genera and they are scattered over several publications with little distribution outside of the community of specialized lichenologists. A comprehensive flora of Central European freshwater lichens was missing completely.

This book is intended to fill that gap and to aid both the lichenologists as well as the non specialized environmentalist on his way to efficient and correct identification of the freshwater lichen flora of Central Europe. Detailed descriptions for all better known taxa of amphibious lichens as well as fotographs for most of the species are given and the keys include spezialized freshwater species as well as a selection of taxa with a wide ecological amplitude which are frequently found at the borders of streams and lakes.

Algen spielen neben den Bakterien und Pilzen eine wichtige Rolle im Bodenleben. Zur Vertiefung der Kenntnis bodenbewohnender eukaryontischer Algen fehlte bisher ein Bestimmungswerk, das die weltweit verstreuten Daten zusammengefasst darstellt. Uber 1000 Algenarten sind bislang aus Boden, aus der Luft und aus Flechten beschrieben, doch ist das Wissen uber Lebensvorgange, Reproduktion, Entwicklung usw. noch sehr luckenhaft. Auch sind viele Bodenalgen uberhaupt nur mittels Kulturen erfassbar. Dieser Syllabus enthalt deshalb fur 260 Gattungen und mehr als 1000 Arten aero-terrestrischer Algen entsprechende Bestimmungsschlussel, Beschreibungen von Morphologie und Zytologie samt Abbildungen, dazu noch erganzende Hinweise auf Vorkommen, Verbreitung und vorhandene Kulturen. Ein Sonderkapital ist dabei den eukaryontischen Flechtenalgen gewidmet. Die systematische Gliederung und Anordnung stellt einen Kompromiss zwischen den Auffassungen der klassischen und modernen Systematik unter besonderer Berucksichtigung der Lichtmikroskopie dar. Soweit moglich wurden neben der Originalliteratur auch Eigenbeobachtungen und Kulturen in die Bearbeitung mit einbezogen. An taxonomischen Namensanderungen und Neubeschreibungen ist die neue Familie "Myrmeciaceae" (Ordnung Chlorellales) hervorzuheben. Hinweise auf wichtige Literatur sollen zu weiterfuhrenden Untersuchungen anregen.

Im allgemeinen Teil finden sich wesentliche Informationen uber Okologie, Bestimmung und Kulturmethoden bei Bodenalgen sowie ubersichtliche Darstellungen der charakteristischen morphologischen und zytologischen Merkmale der behandelten Algengruppen.

Seit dem Erscheinen der 1. Auflage sind zahlreiche weitere aeroterrestrische Algen beschrieben und taxonomische Anderungen vorgenommen worden. Hinweise dazu und die entsprechenden Literaturangaben samt Register sind als Erganzungsteil nach den Bildtafeln und vor der Literatur des Hauptteils eingefugt."
