Alderley Park Discovered is written by former AstraZeneca chemist George Hill, whose carefully researched text is presented in a wonderfully lively and readable style. The 400-acre site is a unique and beautiful natural environment with a rich, varied history, beginning with the creation of the Park by the Stanley family from the sixteenth century. It is also home to a diverse range of wildlife, and George Hill's considerable knowledge in this area reveals its wealth in the middle section of the book. He then tells of the Park's remarkable scientific inception by ICI, moving on to its huge growth under Zeneca and AstraZeneca, revealing the inside stories of the groundbreaking heart and cancer drugs discovered on the site. Now, under the auspices of Manchester Science Partnerships, Alderley Park has become a hub for Life Sciences, and is set to be developed for new residential and leisure purposes into the future. This fascinating, lavishly illustrated and beautifully produced book will be of huge appeal to anyone with connections to the Park, including current and former employees, local people and historians.
Nature warden Tim Corn helps to spot a rare seabird, an all-black storm petrel, off the little Isle of Lifandoy. Meanwhile terrible news reveals that Lifandoy's ownership has changed, while Tim's eccentric Uncle Wilfred has vanished down a hole and made a historic discovery, which he reveals to Tim and his fiancee Jessica Bull. But all is overshadowed when a Canadian cult, the People of White, arrive to take over the island. The cult's demands soon shock the islanders. Tim's ideological foe Graham Fytts sides with the cult, while Wilfred, Jessica's scheming small sisters Alice and Rosalind, and Darren Stocks with his beery friends all plot to evade its restrictions. The cult's members in return attempt to brainwash or convert the islanders. What might happen when the cult test Tim an Jessica's Christian beliefs? Can they still marry? Can the island be saved? Who might turn to violence? And where are those black birds?
Tim Corn, a nature warden on little Lifandoy island, is at war. With his girlfriend Jessica he fights to protect rare birds and their precious nest from the ruthless farming of his pesky Uncle Wilfred! But Wilfred has a strangely urgent quest of his own! In this comic story of nature, island life and conscience, Tim also has to deal with Jessica's scheming young sister Alice and a gallery of colourful island characters. Later he also faces criminal egg-collectors and an invasion of rare bird 'twitchers'. Uncle Wilfred is known throughout the island as a helpful but alarming eccentric. To Tim's irritation, he is also a determined Christian. Tim finds in both his uncle and in Jessica, who is an atheist like Tim himself, depths he did not expect. What deep memory has Jessica buried? And could Uncle Wilfred himself ever change? Can Tim's problems ever be untangled? What violent result might ensue? And where ARE his rare birds, after all?
Tim and his fiancee Jessica find Lifandoy invaded by falcon thieves. They plan to foil them. But a simple crime becomes both a personal tragedy and a crisis for the green movement. Jessica's young sisters join the chaos, while Uncle Wilfred has his own plan. New friends make a great find. Then a vile new threat to Lifandoy's wildlife appears. In the confusion, the falcon thieves raid a nest. As the evil around him threatens what he lives for, Tim ponders its origin. Moved by the fire of a diving falcon at the chasm of the Great Stack, and by an odd reading from Uncle Wilfred, Tim struggles for answers. A shock find by Wilfred sets the whole island agog, with Alice and friends in the lead. Into the bedlam breaks news of a horrifying climax. Why does Uncle Wilfred want half an army? Tim is tested to the limit with strange results. Can the falcons be saved and the thieves caught? Can environmental ruin be avoided? And what will be next for Tim - if he lives?
Shart of Atlantis is a seabird-riding merman from a lost race that shrank and vanished 3000 years ago. In this wry but dark Christian legend science fiction, he flies half an ocean to Rockall, to find the strange Singer whose mystic Song rules even the waves. There he and David, a naval pilot from a mind-controlled computer world nearly kill each other. Shart flies back to his undersea city with a dreadful command from the Singer. Yet what new twin perils has his proud sister Vanarn awoken in his absence? Could the terrible Leviathan really return? Meanwhile, David finds none who avoid the power of the all-seeing 'frame' except the strange Themers, who have been joined by Mairi, David's fiery Gaelic wife. David mocks her; but finds she disbelieves him too. The strange Commander Spenser sends him to find Shart again; but who hunts Spenser? Will the Lords of Atlantis condemn David? Or will war take all back to Rockall? And what does connect the Theme and the eternal Song?
