Daniel Defoe in Context (Hardcover): Albert J. Rivero, George Justice Daniel Defoe in Context (Hardcover)
Albert J. Rivero, George Justice
R3,058 R2,725 Discovery Miles 27 250 Save R333 (11%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Innovative in its structure and approach, Daniel Defoe in Context contains 42 essays by leading scholars illuminating the life, times, and world of Daniel Defoe. Defoe is one of the most important literary figures in English history, thanks not only to his pioneering novels Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders, but also to his notable works in journalism, travel writing, conduct literature, and verse, both satiric and serious. Written with general readers and students in mind, the essays in this volume provide up-to-date knowledge about eighteenth-century literature, culture, and history in a high quality, clearly written, but completely accessible form. Together they demonstrate the ways not only in which Defoe's world shaped his writing, but also in which Defoe's writings profoundly affected his world, and therefore our world.

The text of the Fourth Edition of the Norton Critical Edition of Emma is based on the 1816 edition published by John Murray. George Justice has lightly and judiciously emended the text for faithfulness and clarity. The novel is accompanied by detailed explanatory annotations as well as facsimiles of the 1816 title and dedication pages. "Backgrounds" collects a wealth of source material, much of it new to the Fourth Edition. New material includes Austen's correspondence with her publisher about the business of writing, revealing Austen's view of her own writing and career. In addition, there are two sets of verses-"Kitty, A Fair But Frozen Maid" and "Robin Adair"-referenced in Emma as well as responses (1815-1950) to Austen and her writing from, among others, Charlotte Bronte, Juliet Pollock, Virginia Woolf, D. W. Harding, and Edmund Wilson. "Reviews and Criticism" includes twelve major interpretations of the novel, nine of them new to the Fourth Edition. New contributors include Jan Fergus, Patricia Meyer Spacks, Tony Tanner, Maaja Stewart, D. A. Miller, Emily Auerbach, Gabrielle D. V. White, Richard Jenkyns, and David Monaghan. A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included.

Samuel Richardson; Edited by Louise Curran, George Justice, Sören Hammerschmidt

Samuel Richardson was one of the great letter-writers in English. His three great novels, Pamela, Clarissa, and Sir Charles Grandison were written in epistolary form, and Richardson himself was known in his time for the way he used his letters for both professional and personal purposes. As a printer, Richardson corresponded with authors, readers, and other printers and publishers. As a friend, he supported his correspondents when they were personally struggling. As a novelist, he engaged readers both before and after the publication of his works, soliciting their opinion and defending his own methods. Correspondence Primarily on Pamela and Clarissa (1732–1749) gives us Richardson the printer, the friend, and the novelist in the crucial early years of his unexpected success and fame as a literary writer, providing insight into how and why he created innovative works that changed the course of literary history.

The courthouses of Georgia's 159 counties hold the keys to the history of individual families and entire communities alike. From their primary role as the temples of justice for our court system to their better-known function as the official repository of public records for significant life events, these buildings anchor many of Georgia's town squares.
In "Courthouses of Georgia," internationally recognized photographer Greg Newington captures the prominence and character of these great structures. His images pay tribute to the community's investment in preserving historic courthouses for future generations and celebrate new facilities designed to accommodate expanded county programs and services, keeping pace with the state's tremendous growth.
"Courthouses of Georgia" commemorates the centennial anniversary of Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG), Georgia's county government association. In his introduction to this lavishly illustrated book, former Georgia House of Representatives majority leader Larry Walker shares memories of county courthouses by legislators, authors, judges, and other notable state figures, and historian George Justice highlights the proud civic and architectural heritage of each structure to provide additional context. Organized by the nine travel regions of Georgia, the book offers the perfect starting point for touring any of Georgia's counties and instills an appreciation for historic preservation.
