Stepping ahead of the general front, Volume 41 in the series "Advances in Enzyme Regulation" moves the studies of mammalian enzymic and metabolic regulation forward.

This volume was dedicated on the centenary of his birth to Sir Hans A. Krebs who gave the Special Symposium lectures for 15 years. George Weber spoke on the joint work he carried out in Oxford with Krebs and his associates, entitled "Cancer and Clinical Targeting."

Much of the Symposium centered on novel aspects of signal transduction, including Inositol Signaling and on phosphatidylinositol 3'kinase and kinase B. The Special Symposium Lecture was given on Inositol Lipid Signaling in the Nucleus.
The location and regulation of protein kinases were discussed.
Clinical aspects of enzyme regulation were presented featuring studies on dihydrophyrimidine dehydrogenase, development, citrullinemia and human melanoma heparanase.
Drug targeting and resistance were reviewed featuring etoposide and tumor vasculature. Regulation of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase and abrogration of cytokine-dependency were analyzed. Challenging results on mRNA stability and apoptosis were presented covering cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors, lysosomal cathepsins, human breast tumors and actin reorganization. Hauptziel der Untersuchung ist, mit gesellschaftstheoretischen Mitteln dieses vermeintlich sichere Urteil auf seinen Gehalt kritisch zu uberprufen. Nach einer erkenntnistheoretischen und geistesgeschichtlichen Hinfuhrung zum Thema bekommt die Formulierung einer sozialwissenschaftlich fundierten Theorie der Todesverdrangung, die die ublichen kulturkritischen Folien einer totalisierenden Vernunft- und Modernitatskritik vermeidet, einen zentralen Stellenwert. Die in einem letzten grosseren Gedankenschritt formulierten "Uberwindungsversuche" moderner Todesverdrangung beziehen die Kriterien ihrer Kritik aus den Kategorien der Moderne selbst und nicht von einem extramundanen Standpunkt her."

Dies gilt zumin- dest flir den alteren unter den beiden Autoren nicht, er hat genugend Fahrten gelegt. In den letzten funfundzwanzig Jahren hat er versucht, die Publikationen zur Sozi- alarbeit/Sozialpadagogik kritisch mitzulesen. In drei Semestern der neunziger Jahre haben beide Autoren in gemeinsamen Seminaren an der Westfalischen Wilhelms- Universitat Munster einschlagige Themen dazu mit Studenten bearbeitet. Nicht nur zu beobachten, wie andere vor uns den anstehenden Topos beobachtet haben, son- dern auch, wie selektiv er fokussiert wird, war flir uns aufschlussreich. Als eines un- serer Ergebnisse stellten wir in allen behandelten Publikationen das Fehlen eines stringenten gesellschaftstheoretischen Bezuges fest, der selbstverstandlich nicht als Evangelium verstanden werden sollte. In unserem Versuch greifen wir auf das Instrumentarium der funktional-strukturellen Systemtheorie Niklas Luhmanns zu- ruck. Wie in allen wissenschaftlichen Diskursen so bleibt auch hier alles im Vor- vorletzten. Wie koennte man auch das, was sich als ein moeglicher Diskussionsbeitrag versteht, anders einordnen? Kennern der Materie wird bald auffallen, dass einige gute Veroeffentlichungen zum behandelten Problem in unserem Literaturverzeichnis fehlen. Der Grund ist einfach: Wir wollten etwas uberblicken und mussten deshalb manches ubersehen. Kundige Leser bitten wir an diesem Punkt um Nachsicht. Soll der Duktus nicht verloren gehen, darf man in einem ersten Zugriff auf die Problematik keine Fussno- tenorgien zelebrieren. Deshalb haben wir uns auf das Noetigste beschrankt.

Im vorliegenden Band macht die 'Forsehergruppe Soziale Gerontologie' der Westfalischen Wilhelms-Universitat und der Fachhochschule Munster der Fachoffentlichkeit im Gesundheits- und Sozialwesen, Lesem aus Wissenschaft und Praxis der Altenpflege, Forschungsergebnisse zuganglich, die in den letzten drei Jahren gewonnen wurden. Die interdisziplinar zusammengesetzte Forschergruppe arbeitet bereits seit Jahren in Munster erfolgreich zusammen. Ihren Ausgang hat sie in thematisch abgestimmten Lehrveranstaltungen fur Studierende beider Hochschulen ge nommen. Beteiligt sind Vertreter der Soziologie, Psychologie, Erziehungs wissenschaft und Medizin. DaB Universitat und Fachhochschule an einem Hochschulort in Lehre und Forschung kooperieren, gehort keineswegs zu den Selbstverstandlichkeiten in der deutschen Hochschullandschaft. Die Forschergruppe hat mehrfach aktuelle Themen zu 'Alter und Altem' aufgegriffen, bearbeitet und ihre Resultate publiziert. Da nicht alle alles gleich zeitig tun konnten, haben einige Kollegen von uns die Forschung, andere mehr die Lehre und Weiterbildung betrieben. Ein Schwerpunktthema der Forschung waren subjektive Alterstheorien bei Ehrenamtlichen und Professionellen in der Altenhilfe bzw. Altenpflege. Parallel zu den Aktivitaten der Forschergruppe entwickelte sich vor rund 10 1ahren das 'Studium im Alter' an der Universitat Munster, ein im Lehrangebot nicht mehr wegzudenkender institutionalisierter Teil. MaBgeblich etabliert wurde dieses Lehrangebot fur Altere durch einen Vertreter der Forschergruppe. An der Fachhochschule Munster gehort das Lehrgebiet 'Psychologie des Altems' seit Jahren zum Standardlehrprogramm in den Studiengangen Sozialarbeit und Sozialpadagogik."
