Engaging with Historical Traumas - Experiential Learning and Pedagogies of Resilience (Paperback): Nena Mocnik, Ger Duijzings,... Engaging with Historical Traumas - Experiential Learning and Pedagogies of Resilience (Paperback)
Nena Mocnik, Ger Duijzings, Hanna Meretoja, Bonface Njeresa Beti
R1,240 Discovery Miles 12 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides case-studies of how teachers and practitioners have attempted to develop more effective 'experiential learning' strategies in order to better equip students for their voluntary engagements in communities, working for sustainable peace and a tolerant society free of discrimination. All chapters revolve around this central theme, testing and trying various paradigms and experimenting with different practices, in a wide range of geographical and historical arenas. They demonstrate the innovative potentials of connecting know-how from different disciplines and combining experiences from various practitioners in this field of shaping historical memory, including non-formal and formal sectors of education, non-governmental workers, professionals from memorial sites and museums, local and global activists, artists, and engaged individuals. In so doing, they address the topic of collective historical traumas in ways that go beyond conventional classroom methods. Interdisciplinary in approach, the book provides a combination of theoretical reflections and concrete pedagogical suggestions that will appeal to educators working across history, sociology, political science, peace education and civil awareness education, as well as memory activists and remembrance practitioners.

Working At Night - The Temporal Organisation of Labour Across Political and Economic Regimes (Hardcover): Ger Duijzings, Lucie... Working At Night - The Temporal Organisation of Labour Across Political and Economic Regimes (Hardcover)
Ger Duijzings, Lucie Duskova
R3,104 Discovery Miles 31 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The night represents almost universally a special, liminal or "out of the ordinary" temporal zone with its own meanings, possibilities and dangers, and political, cultural, religious and social implications. Only in the modern era was the night systematically "colonised" and nocturnal activity "normalised," in terms of (industrial) labour and production processes. Although the globalised 24/7 economy is usually seen as the outcome of capitalist modernisation, development and expansion starting in the late nineteenth century, other consecutive and more recent political and economic systems adopted perpetual production systems as well, extending work into the night and forcing workers to work the "night shift," normalising it as part of an alternative non-capitalist modernity. This volume draws attention to the extended work hours and night shift work, which have remained underexplored in the history of labour and the social science literature. By describing and comparing various political and economic "regimes," it argues that, from the viewpoint of global labour history, night labour and the spread of 24/7 production and services should not be seen, only and exclusively, as an epiphenomenon of capitalist production, but rather as one of the outcomes of industrial modernity.

Religion and the Politics of Identity in Kosovo (Paperback): Ger Duijzings Religion and the Politics of Identity in Kosovo (Paperback)
Ger Duijzings
R1,088 Discovery Miles 10 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Observers have traditionally viewed Kosovo as a frontier society where two Balkan nations, Albanian and Serb, as well as two religions, Islam and Christianity, clash over conflicts of national and religious identity. While this rift is usually perceived as hard and fast, Duijzings shows that the area also has a history of coexistence through cultural contact, religious exchange, and conversion. His new perspective challenges the notion that Balkan conflicts have evolved around clear-cut and fixed ethno-religious groups, and instead discusses evidence that Balkan identities are full of ambiguities caused by processes that are important survival strategies in conditions of violence and insecurity. This tension between conflict and symbiosis is at the core of his perspective, which contains compelling case studies of various ethnic groups and examines how religion shapes their efforts to construct or reconstruct their identities.

Though focusing on Kosovo, the scope of these chapters is much wider, covering developments in Croatia, Bosnia, Albania, Macedonia, and Serbia. "Religion and the Politics of Identity in Kosovo" is a fascinating and timely study of the interaction of religious identity with the politics of nationalism.

If Cars Could Walk - Postsocialist Streets in Transformation (Hardcover): Ger Duijzings, Tauri Tuvikene If Cars Could Walk - Postsocialist Streets in Transformation (Hardcover)
Ger Duijzings, Tauri Tuvikene
R3,779 Discovery Miles 37 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the last twenty-five years, the explosive rise of car mobility has transformed street life in postsocialist cities. Whereas previously the social fabric of these cities ran on socialist modes of mobility, they are now overtaken by a culture of privately owned cars. If Cars Could Walk uses ethnographic cases studies documenting these changes in terms of street interaction, vehicles used, and the parameters of speed, maneuverability, and cultural and symbolic values. The altered reality of people’s movements, replacing public transport, bicycles and other former ‘socialist’ modes of mobility with privatized mobility reflect an evolving political and cultural imagination, which in turn shapes their current political reality.

Global Villages - Rural and Urban Transformations in Contemporary Bulgaria (Hardcover, New): Ger Duijzings Global Villages - Rural and Urban Transformations in Contemporary Bulgaria (Hardcover, New)
Ger Duijzings
R3,247 Discovery Miles 32 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the multiple effects of globalization on urban and rural communities, providing anthropological case studies from postsocialist Bulgaria. As globalization has been studied largely in urban contexts, the aim of this volume is to shift attention to the under-examined countryside and analyse how transnational links are transforming relations between cities, towns and villages. The volume also challenges undifferentiated notions of 'the countryside', calling for an awareness of rural economic and social disparities which are often associated with urban environments only. The work focuses on how the 'urban' and 'rural' have been reconfigured following the end of socialism and the advent of globalization, in socioeconomic, as well as political, ideological and cultural terms.
