Many mechanical systems are actively controlled in order to improve their dynamic performance. Examples are elastic satellites, active vehicle suspension systems, robots, magnetic bearings, automatic machine tools. Problems that are typical for mechanical systems arise in the following areas: - Modeling the mechanical system in such a way that the model is suitable for control design - Designing multivariable controls to be robust with respect to parameter variations and uncertainties in system order of elastic structures - Fast real-time signal processing - Generating high dynamic control forces and providing the necessary control power - Reliability and safety concepts, taking into account the growing role of software within the system The objective of the Symposium has been to present methods that contribute to the solutions of such problems. Typical examples are demonstrating the state of the art It intends to evalua~ the limits of performance that can be achieved by controlling the dynamics, and it should point to gaps in present research and areas for future research. Mainly, it has brought together leading experts from quite different areas presenting their points of view. Damit lassen sich einerseits teure Fehlinvestitionen verhindern, an- dererseits besteht durch das Vorhandensein einer solchen Beurteilung die Moeglich- keit, dass eine breite gesellschaftliche Diskussion auf der Basis wissenschaftlicher Argumente stattfinden kann. Dieser Rationalitatsgewinn kann dafur sorgen, dass in gesellschaftlichen Konflikten erst gar nicht auf- verhartete Diskussionsfronten kommen. Mit dem Projekt "Robotik. Optionen der Ersetzbarkeit des Menschen" hat die Europaische Akademie zur Erforschung von Folgen wissenschaftlich-technischer Entwicklungen Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler GmbH versucht, eine Rationale Tech- nikfolgenbeurteilung von autonomen Robotern zu einem Zeitpunkt zu beginnen, an dem verschiedene Forschungslabors bereits uber hoch entwickelte Prototypen von Service-Robotern verfugten. Eine breitere gesellschaftliche Diskussion begann in Deutschland erst Mitte des vergangenen Jahres. Sie findet erstaunlicherwei- se nicht auf den Wissenschaftsseiten der Presse statt, sondern im Feuilleton, und dementsprechend weniger auf wissenschaftliche Fakten als auf persoenliche Visio- nen Einzelner bezogen. Die in diesem Band der Schriftenreihe "Wissenschafts- ethik und Technikfolgenbeurteilung" prasentierten Ergebnisse einer interdiszipli- naren Arbeitsgruppe stellen einen wichtigen Beitrag zu dieser Diskussion dar und tragen dazu bei, die Diskussion auf einer rationalen Ebene weiterzufuhren. Die gemeinsame Autorenschaft von acht Wissenschaftlern kann als "Prufstein" fur die Qualitat der interdisziplinaren Forschung angesehen werden: Fragen hoher gesellschaftlicher Relevanz werden aus wissenschaftlichen und aus verschiedenen gesellschafts-politischen Perspektiven beantwortet mit dem Ziel, politisch umsetz- bare Handlungsempfehlungen im Konsens zu verabschieden. Ich danke den Mitglie- dern der Projektgruppe vor allem dafur, dass sie diese komplexe Aufgabe in ihrer zweijahrigen Arbeit mit grossem persoenlichen Einsatz bewaltigt haben.

Magnetlager zur ber}hrungsfreien Lagerung von Rotoren gewinnen eine zunehmende Bedeutung z.B. in der Vakuumtechnik, bei Werkzeugmaschinen und bei Turbomaschinen. Besondere Vorteile bieten die Ber}hrungsfreiheit und die regelbare Dynamik der Lagerung. Diese Eigenschaften erlauben z.B. neue Konstruktionen, einen Betrieb ohne mechanischen Verschlei und deshalb weniger Wartungsaufwand sowie hohe Drehzahlen mit der M-glichkeit zur aktiven Schwingungsd{mpfung. Demgegen}ber steht die Komplexit{t der Lagerung, deren Verst{ndnis Kenntnisse aus dem Bereich Mechanik, Elektrotechnik und Regelungstechnik erfordert. Das Buch behandelt die theoretischen Grundlagen der Rotordynamik, des elektromagnetischen Kreises und der Regelungstechnik, die zum Verst{ndnis der elektromagnetischen Lagerung notwendig sind. Beispiele von experimentellen Ausf}hrungen und praktischen Anwendungen von Magnetlagern in Labor und Industrie verkn}pfen die Theorie mit der Praxis. Ziel des Buches ist es, grundlegende Kenntnisse }ber den Aufbau und die Komponenten eines Magnetlagersystems zu vermitteln und damit die F{higkeit, ein elektromagnetisches Lager zu beurteilen, es bei einer rotordynamischen Aufgabe in der Konstruktion oder der Entwicklung einzusetzen oder im Betrieb damit umzugehen.
