Gymnastics, a Transatlantic Movement - From Europe to America (Hardcover): Gertrud Pfister Gymnastics, a Transatlantic Movement - From Europe to America (Hardcover)
Gertrud Pfister
R3,883 Discovery Miles 38 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores, analyses, and explains divergent ideologies and practices of gymnastics in selected European nations. It reconstructs the ex- and import processes from Europe to America and determines the processes, interrelationships and transformations of these "transatlantic movements" in their new home country. The book offers a more complete understanding of the role of gymnastics and expressive movements in cultural and ideological transmission over time and identifies the impact of these concepts on American physical education, sports systems and sports cultures.

The main focus of the book lies in the two decades before and after World War I. This concentration on a specific historical epoch allows us to identify parallel, but also different developments of the various forms of gymnastics and of the transfer and implementation processes.

The volume covers the transfer and impact of German Turnen, Czech Sokol and the Delsarte system in North America. In addition, it traces the influences of French gymnastics in South America and describes the tours of the world-renowned Danish gymnastic reformer Nils Bukh in both Americas. A focus will be the "import" of gymnastics, but also on the adaption processes of these different concepts and their integration into the American culture.

This book was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

Gerald R. Gems, Gertrud Pfister
R5,180 Discovery Miles 51 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the nineteenth century the USA has served as an international model for business, lifestyle and sporting success. Throughout the book, the development of American sport is linked to political, social, gender and economic issues, as well as the orientations and cultures of the multilayered American society with its manifold regional, ethnic, social, and gendered diversities.

Topics covered include:

  • American college sports
  • the influence of immigrant populations
  • the unique status of American football
  • the emergence of women's sport in the USA

With co-authors from either side of the Atlantic, Understanding American Sports uses both the outsider's perspective and that of the insider to explain American sports culture. With its extensive use of examples and illustrations, this is an engrossing and informative resource for all students of sports studies and American culture.

Extraordinary Sportswomen (Paperback): Susanna Hedenborg, Gertrud Pfister Extraordinary Sportswomen (Paperback)
Susanna Hedenborg, Gertrud Pfister
R1,197 Discovery Miles 11 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As in many other fields, in sports too, women were latecomers and considered as the 'other sex' - at least until the twenty-first century. When sport developed in its modern forms towards the second half of the nineteenth century, women were (and to a certain degree still are) considered too weak to participate in strenuous physical activities, and were thus excluded from various sports, competitions and events. Although they gradually gained access to all sports, competitive sport was - and is still today - one of the few areas in modern societies with strict gender segregation: in most sports, men do not compete against women and playing sport is always 'doing gender'. Yet, in many epochs and in many regions of the world, there were female 'rebels' who did not comply with the ideals, norms and rules that contributed to women's marginalization. Who were these women, what were their aims and motivations, which strategies did they apply and how did they fight and win their battles against the gender order of their time? The chapters were originally published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

Gender, Media, Sport (Paperback): Susanna Hedenborg, Gertrud Pfister Gender, Media, Sport (Paperback)
Susanna Hedenborg, Gertrud Pfister
R1,426 Discovery Miles 14 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite the position that sport occupies at the centre of public attention, and despite the billions of consumers and immense coverage which it attracts from around the globe, it seems that the media prioritise coverage of only a very small fraction of sporting events, and a few prominent athletes. It goes without saying that sport in the media is dominated by men - they are a large majority among athletes, consumers, journalists, and producers. This book will shed new light on the long discussed question of gendered sporting coverage, in an era when the Olympics can be dubbed the 'women's games'. Some of the contributions present new perspectives such as: the relationship between media and sport in Poland; media presentations of men and women in gender 'adequate' and 'inadequate' sports; competition between women and men participating in the same events; the presentation of celebrities; and the framing of doping within the context of gender relations. Furthermore, the book focuses not only on athletes, sports and events, but also on consumers, such as hooligans and their brand of masculinity, and on journalists, such as Mike Penner, who attempted to transgress gender boundaries. This book was originally published as a special issue of Sport in Society.
