While the past decade proved to be some of the most tumultuous
times in modern US history, the Black community has been resilient,
opening up dialogues and sustaining advocacy. Nowhere has this been
more apparent than at the Obie Award-winning The Fire This Time
Festival in New York City. Since being founded in 2009, this
theater festival has become the destination for emerging and early
career playwrights from the African diaspora. Inequality in
education and healthcare, skewed and negative images of Black
people in mainstream media, racism in policing, widespread
gentrification and its effects on multi-generational Black
neighbourhoods, and the growth of Black love; these conversations
have been happening in the US, and The Fire This Time Festival has
borne witness. 25 Plays from The Fire This Time Festival: A Decade
of Recognition, Resistance, Resilience, Rebirth, and Black Theater
reflects this fantastic legacy, containing 25 ten-minute plays
originally produced by the eponymous festival. Together, these
pieces bookend the Black experience in the US from 2009 to the
present day: from the hope for further progress and equity under
the Obama administration, to the existential threat faced by Black
people under the Trump presidency. Edited and curated by Kelley
Nicole Girod, the anthology divides the plays into seven thematic
sections concerning multi-faceted aspects of the Black experience,
featuring work by seminal writers such as Katori Hall, Antoinette
Nwandu, Dominique Morisseau, C.A. Johnson, and Marcus Gardley. Both
timely and timeless, 25 Plays from The Fire This Time Festival
presents an exciting, eclectic mix of 21st century theater that is
perfect for study, performance, and reflection.
Multi-Frame Motion-Compensated Prediction for Video Transmission
presents a comprehensive description of a new technique in video
coding and transmission. The work presented in the book has had a
very strong impact on video coding standards and will be of
interest to practicing engineers and researchers as well as
academics. The multi-frame technique and the Lagrangian coder
control have been adopted by the ITU-T as an integral part of the
well known H.263 standard and are were adopted in the ongoing H.26L
project of the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group. This work will
interest researchers and students in the field of video coding and
transmission. Moreover, engineers in the field will also be
interested since an integral part of the well known H.263 standard
is based on the presented material.
With a preface by Ton Kalker. Informed Watermarking is an essential
tool for both academic and professional researchers working in the
areas of multimedia security, information embedding, and
communication. Theory and practice are linked, particularly in the
area of multi-user communication. From the Preface: Watermarking
has become a more mature discipline with proper foundation in both
signal processing and information theory. We can truly say that we
are in the era of "second generation" watermarking. This book is
first in addressing watermarking problems in terms of
second-generation insights. It provides a complete overview of the
most important results on capacity and security. The Costa scheme,
and in particular a simpler version of it, the Scalar Costa scheme,
is studied in great detail. An important result of this book is
that it is possible to approach the Shannon limit within a few
decibels in a practical system. These results are verified on
real-world data, not only the classical category of images, but
also on chemical structure sets. Inspired by the work of Moulin and
O'Sullivan, this book also addresses security aspects by studying
AGWN attacks in terms of game theory. "The authors of Informed
Watermarking give a well-written exposA(c) of how watermarking came
of age, where we are now, and what to expect in the future. It is
my expectation that this book will be a standard reference on
second-generation watermarking for the years to come." Ton Kalker,

References 141 Index 159 Preface This book aims to capture recent
advances in motion compensation for - ficient video compression. It
investigates linearly combined motion comp- sated signals and
generalizes the well known superposition for bidirectional
prediction in B-pictures. The number of superimposed signals and
the sel- tion of reference pictures will be important aspects of
the discussion. The application oriented part of the book employs
this concept to the well known ITU-T Recommendation H.263 and
continues with the improvements by superimposed motion-compensated
signals for the emerging ITU-T R- ommendation H.264 and ISO/IEC
MPEG-4 (Part 10). In addition, it discusses a new approach for
wavelet-based video coding. This technology is currently
investigated by MPEG to develop a new video compression standard
for the mid-term future.
The complexity and volatility of energy markets creates strong
demand for quantitative analysis and econometric techniques. This
book offers an introduction to the state of the art in econometric
modelling applied to the most pertinent issues in today's energy
markets for a better understanding of the working of energy systems
and energy economics.
The twentieth century ended with the vision of smart dust: a
network of wirelessly connected devices whose size would match that
of a dust particle, each one a se-
containedpackageequippedwithsensing, computation, communication,
andpower. Smart dust held the promise to bridge the physical and
digital worlds in the most unobtrusive manner, blending together
realms that were previously considered well separated. Applications
involved scattering hundreds, or even thousands, of smart dust
devices to monitor various environmental quantities in scenarios
ranging from habitat monitoring to disaster management. The devices
were envisioned to se- organize to accomplish their task in the
most ef?cient way. As such, smart dust would become a powerful
tool, assisting the daily activities of scientists and en- neers in
a wide range of disparate disciplines. Wireless sensor networks
(WSNs), as we know them today, are the most no- worthy attempt at
implementing the smart dust vision. In the last decade, this ?eld
has seen a fast-growing investment from both academia and industry.
Signi?cant ?nancial resources and manpower have gone into making
the smart dust vision a reality through WSNs. Yet, we still cannot
claim complete success. At present, only specialist
computerscientists or computerengineershave the necessary
background to walk the road from conception to a ?nal, deployed,
and running WSN syst
Traditionally, three-dimensional image analysis (a.k.a. computer
vision) and three-dimensional image synthesis (a.k.a. computer
graphics) were separate fields. Rarely were experts working in one
area interested in and aware of the advances in the other. Over the
last decade this has changed dramatically, reflecting the growing
maturity of each of these areas. The vision and graphics
communities are today engaged in a mutually beneficial exchange,
learning from each other and coming up with new ideas and
techniques that build on the state of the art in both fields. This
book is the result of a fruitful collaboration between scientists
at the University of NA1/4rnberg, Germany, who, coming from diverse
fields, are working together propelled by the vision of a unified
area of three-dimensional image analysis and synthesis. Principles
of 3D Image Analysis and Synthesis starts out at the image
acquisition end of a hypothetical processing chain, proceeds with
analysis, recognition and interpretation of images, towards the
representation of scenes by 3D geometry, then back to images via
rendering and visualization techniques. Coverage includes
discussion of range cameras, multiview image processing, the
structure-from-motion problem, object recognition, knowledge-based
image analysis, active vision, geometric modeling with meshes and
splines, and reverse engineering. Also included is cutting-edge
coverage of texturing techniques, global illumination, image-based
rendering, volume visualization, flow visualization techniques, and
acoustical imaging including object localization from audio and
video. This state-of-the-art volume is a concise and readable
reference for scientists, engineers, graduate students and
educators working in image processing, vision, computer graphics,
or visualization.
When Ben and Barbara Girod married in 1973, they had no idea their
new life together would be one of shared burdens and blessings,
lovely dreams and bitter disappointments. Both products of a strict
and conservative Amish upbringing, they sought to know Jesus, and
they wanted more than the form and tradition of their Amish
upbringing. In An Amish Journey to Forgiveness, author Ben Girod
tells his remarkable and unusual story of Amish life, reflecting
his painstaking social and spiritual journey over many decades. His
responsibilities as a bishop and church leader were manifold as he
dealt with the predominant and inherent traditions of the Old Order
Amish church. A divine encounter with God brought peace and joy to
their lives, but this was soon followed by misunderstanding and
rejection by family, church members, and leaders, ultimately ending
in excommunication from their respective district. Devastated,
confused, and unable to understand why this was happening, they
turned to the Lord in search of meaning and purpose. An Amish
Journey to Forgiveness shares their story as they began to
understand that God was allowing such persecution and suffering to
draw them closer to Him. It shows how God used Girod to bring about
an awareness of the need for healing and reconciliation throughout
the body.
"Profiling the Criminal Mind" is, as the subtitle indicates, is a
text and reference on behavioral science and criminal investigative
analysis for investigators, forensic scientists, prosecutors,
behavioral scientists, and academics. This compilation combines
crime scene forensics and experience with behavioral science to get
into the criminal's mind and interpret crime scenes.
A practical guide to applied criminology, the author brings
together his years of experience as a detective/investigator and
professor of criminology and criminal justice to outline an
inter-disciplinary approach to analyzing crime scenes and crime
scene behavior.
Multi-discipline sleuths and researchers into the criminal mind
will find this combined approach to analysis a valuable strategic
approach to the study of violent criminal behavior.
Asia is one of the most dynamic regions in the world, but with
local business condition changing fast since the 1997 crisis, the
strategies and roles of multinationals in the region have also had
to evolve rapidly.
This book presents new core concepts related to the management of
relationships in Asia by adopting an international business
perspective and following a coherent theme around intra- and
inter-organizational relationships, institutional relationships and
relationships with stakeholders. In order to survive and maximize
profitability in the region, it has become necessary for MNEs to
establish new relationships with local organizations and
institutions as well as change their approach to managing existing
relations. To guide readers through this highly relevant and
intricate phenomenon, "Multinationals" "and Asia "adopts a dynamic
approach, focusing on MNEs themselves and the strategic challenges
they face through the development and management of internal
relationships in various complex Asian environments. A series of
chapters discusses core concepts of cooperative arrangements and
management of internal networks. Relationships between MNEs,
international and national institutions and other stakeholders are
also addressed, with focus on careful selected themes such as
innovation, intellectual property rights, labor relations and
governance mechanisms.
This edition is an essential reader for top management leaders,
senior economic analysts, policy makers, academic scholars and
international business students interested in contemporary Asia.

Montpellier to their first-ever top-flight title. After signing for
Arsenal in 2012, he rewarded the Gunners with 73 goals in 180 games
and helped them to three FA Cup wins. He is also the French
national team's second-highest scorer. Now at Chelsea, Giroud is
still hungry for success. But what about the sacrifices he's made
along the way? The pressures of being under the spotlight and
having to cope with a constant stream of criticism and questions
around his selection for the national side? Usually a private
person, Giroud holds nothing back as he shares all the highs and
lows of a stellar career at the game's top level in this tell-all
book.
This innovative book provides a greater understanding of the
relationships between transnational corporations and the economic
development of host economies. In the age of globalisation,
awareness of the mechanisms through which foreign firms impact on
host countries is crucial. The emphasis lies on backward linkages
and knowledge transfer to local firms. The book offers a
theoretical framework for the activities of TNCs and a review of
their impacts on South East Asian economies. The author conveys
in-depth information, using extensive data collected from
transnational corporations in the Malaysian electrical and
electronics sector. A unique approach is adopted by presenting
factors explaining the existence as well as the degree of knowledge
transfer through backward linkages. To date, no other study has
provided a full range of data - qualitative and quantitative - on
the existence, as well as the degree, of backward linkages'
transfer. Academics, practitioners and students of international
business studies, international development and Asian studies will
find Transnational Corporations, Technology and Economic
Development of great interest, as will business school libraries in
European, North American and Asian universities.
This volume seeks to trace certain tendencies and developments in
social policy in Western Europe and the United States. In the
first, which is general, Professor Girod recalls the objectives of
social policy as well as offering a number of scenarios or
strategies for the future of social policy. The social policy
philosophy of Schumpeter, Hayek and Roepke, and their current
vitality, are traced by Professor de Luabier. Professor Delcourt,
in his chapter on Social Policy - crisis or mutation?, presents a
critical analysis of various trends in social policy and in
particular the elitist philosophy of Hirschmann. The second part of
the volume deals with particular national experiences: Switzerland
by Professor Tschudi; Sweden by Dr. Hartmann; the United States by
Professor Beneton; and Italy by Professor Donati. The book broadly
covers the diverse range of subject matter encompassed within the
term 'social policy' and should be of great value both to social
policy practitioners as well as to those academics concerned with
the fields of economics, sociology and political science.
Offering an original discussion of the gentrification phenomenon in
Europe, this book provides new theoretical insights into classical
works on the subject. Using a thorough analysis of the diversity of
the forms, places and actors of gentrification in an attempt to
isolate its 'DNA', the book addresses the place of social groups in
cities, their competition over the appropriation of space, the
infrastructure unequally offered to them by economic and political
actors and the stakes of everyday social relationships.

Composer and cultural official Nicolas Nabokov (1903-78) led an
unusual life even for a composer who was also a high-level
diplomat. Nabokov was for nearly three decades an outstanding and
far-sighted player in international cultural exchanges during the
Cold War, much admired by some of the most distinguished minds of
his century for the range of his interests and the breadth of his
vision. Nicolas Nabokov: A Life in Freedom and Music follows
Nabokov's life through its fascinating details: a privileged
Russian childhood before the Revolution; exile, first to Germany,
then to France; the beginnings of a promising musical career,
launched under the aegis of Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes with
Ode in 1928; his twelve-year "American exile" during which he
occupied several academic positions; his return to Europe after the
war to participate in the denazification of Germany; his
involvement in anti-Stalinist causes in the first years of the Cold
War; his participation in the Congress for Cultural Freedom; his
role as cultural adviser to the Mayor of Berlin and director of the
Berlin Festival in the early 1960s; the resumption of his American
academic and musical career in the late 1960s and 1970s. Nabokov is
unique not only in that he was involved on a high level in
international cultural politics, but also in that his life
intersected at all times with a vast array of people within, and
also well beyond, the confines of classical music. Drawing on a
vast array of primary sources, Vincent Giroud's first-ever
biography of Nabokov will be of interest readers interested in
twentieth-century music, Russian music, Russian emigration, and the
Cold War, particularly in its cultural aspects. Musicians and
musicologists interested in Nabokov as a composer, or in twentieth
century Russian composers in general, will find in the book
information not available anywhere else.
Of all operas in the standard repertory, none has had a more
complicated genesis and textual history than Offenbach's Tales of
Hoffmann. Based on a highly successful 1851 play inspired by the
short stories by the German Romantic writer E.T.A. Hoffmann, the
work occupied the last decade of Offenbach's life. When he died in
October 1880, the work was being rehearsed at the Opera-Comique. At
once cut and rearranged, the work was performed from the start in
versions that ignored the composer's final intentions. Only a few
decades ago, when previously unavailable manuscripts came to light,
it became possible to reconstitute the score in its real form.
Vincent Giroud and Michael Kaye's The Real 'Tales of Hoffmann'
tells the full story for the first time in English. After
discussing how the work of Hoffmann became known and influential in
France, the book includes little-known sources for the opera,
especially the complete Barbier and Carre play, in French and
English. It describes the genesis of the opera. The annotated
libretto is published in full, with the variants, for the two
versions of the opera: with spoken dialogue or recitatives. Essays
explain what was done to the opera after Offenbach's death, from
the 1881 Opera-Comique production to more recent restoration
attempts. There is also a survey of Les contes d'Hoffmann in
performance from the 1970s to the present, and supplementary
information, including discography, filmography, and videography.
The Real 'Tales of Hoffmann' is intended to appeal to anyone
interested in the work, specialists or non-specialists. Audiences,
musicologists and students of French opera and opera-comique will
find it of particular interest, as will opera houses, conductors,
singers, directors, and dramaturgs involved in performances of the
opera.
