Justice Matters (Hardcover): Gloria Ladson-Billings Justice Matters (Hardcover)
Gloria Ladson-Billings
R1,543 R1,387 Discovery Miles 13 870 Save R156 (10%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Social justice has become a buzzword to suggest we are serious about racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, and ableism. But justice remains elusive and contested. It is written in founding documents, street soldiers declare it: 'no justice, no peace!', but is absent from public interactions. Building on Cornel West’s notion of ‘race matters’ and the Black Lives Matter movement, Justice Matters strips away the rhetoric that keeps us from understanding what justice is, particularly in education, but also in relation to health, race, economy, and environment. Ladson-Billings interrogates the meaning of justice, looking at Western notions of justice from Aristotle to Kant to Rorty, alongside Eastern notions of Justice, from Lao Tzu, to Rumi to Frantz Fanon and W.E.B. Dubois. She shows how the pandemic has exposed deep injustices in society, and how schooling and the curriculum are largely blind to the race, White supremacy, and the racial trauma that plagues marginalized people. She argues that teaching strategies that rely on hierarchy, such as ability groups, tell students who they are and what we expect of them, supposedly doing a 'just' thing but also suggesting that some people are ‘less’ than others - the very narrative of White supremacy. Schooling is the genesis of exclusion and incarceration, with strategies like classroom exclusion, suspension, and expulsion laying the groundwork for the school to prison pipeline. Offering hope for a way forward, she looks at how hip hop can champion justice, and considers justice in the context of social movements, including Black Lives Matter, MoveOn.org, and #MeToo, and explores the pros and cons of 'hashtag activism'. Ultimately she shows us how justice can and should be the central tenet of education and society, and how we can save it from being obscured and watered down.

Many educators already know that hip-hop can be a powerful tool for engaging students. But can hip-hop save our schools-and our society? Hip Hop Genius introduces an iteration of hip-hop education that goes far beyond studying rap music as classroom content. Through stories about the professional rapper who founded the first hip-hop high school and the aspiring artists currently enrolled there, sam seidel lays out a vision for how hip-hop's genius-the resourceful creativity and swagger that took it from a local phenomenon to a global force-can lead to a fundamental remix of the way we think of teaching, school design, and leadership. This 10-year anniversary edition welcomes two new contributing authors, Tony Simmons and Michael Lipset, who bring direct experience running the High School for Recording Arts. The new edition includes new forewords from some of the most prominent names in education and hip-hop, reflections on ten more years of running a hip-hop high school, updates to every chapter from the first edition, details of how the school navigated the unprecedented complexities brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and uprising in response to the murder of George Floyd, and an inspiring new concluding chapter that is a call to action for the field.

Although he spent his career as a lawyer and law school professor, Derrick Bell had a profound impact on the field of education in the area of educational equity. Among many accomplishments, Bell was the first African American to earn tenure at the Harvard Law School; he also established a new course in civil rights law and produced what has become a famous casebook: Race, Racism, and American Law. The man who could rightly be called, "The Father of Critical Race Theory," Bell was an innovator who did things with the law that others had not thought possible. This volume highlights Bell's influence on a number of prominent education and legal scholars by identifying some of his specific work and how they have used it to inform their own thinking and practice. What is contained here is an assemblage of contributors with deep commitments to the path-breaking work of Derrick Bell - a scholar, a teacher, an activist, a mentor, and a covenant keeper.

--Lisa D. Delpit, Benjamin E. Mays Professor of Educational Leadership, Georgia State University

The author of the best-selling book The Dreamkeepers shows how teachers can succeed in diverse classrooms. Educating teachers to work well in multicultural classrooms has become an all-important educational priority in today's schools. In Crossing Over to Canaan, Gloria Ladson-Billings details the real-life stories of eight novice teachers participating in an innovative teacher education program called Teach for Diversity. She details their struggles and triumphs as they confront challenges in the classroom and respond with innovative strategies that turn cultural strengths into academic assets. Through their experiences, Ladson-Billings illustrates how good teachers can meet the challenges of teaching students from highly diverse backgrounds--and find a way to "cross over to Canaan." She offers a model of teaching that focuses on academic achievement, cultural competence, and socio-political consciousness.

Drawing from her own experiences as a young African-American teacher working in Philadelphia, she successfully weaves together narrative, observation, and scholarship to create an inspirational and practical book that will help teachers everywhere as they work to transcend labels and categories to support excellence among all students.

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy - Asking a Different Question (Paperback): Gloria Ladson-Billings Culturally Relevant Pedagogy - Asking a Different Question (Paperback)
Gloria Ladson-Billings
R1,252 Discovery Miles 12 520 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

For the first time, this volume provides a definitive collection of Gloria Ladson-Billings' groundbreaking concept of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP). After repeatedly confronting deficit perspectives that asked, "What's wrong with 'those' kids?", Ladson-Billings decided to ask a different question, one that fundamentally shifted the way we think about teaching and learning. Noting that "those kids" usually meant Black students, she posed a new question: "What is right with Black students and what happens in classrooms where teachers, parents, and students get it right?" This compilation of Ladson-Billings' published work on Culturally Relevant Pedagogy examines the theory, how it works in specific subject areas, and its role in teacher education. The final section looks toward the future, including what it means to re-mix CRP with youth culture such as hip hop. This one-of-a-kind collection can be used as an introduction to CRP and as a summary of the idea as it evolved over time, helping a new generation to see the possibilities that exist in teaching and learning for all students.Featured Essays: 1. Critical Race Theory (CRT) offers an account of society based on systemic, deep-rooted racist oppression that saturates our commonsensical judgements to such an extent that all but the most extreme racism appears normal and unexceptional, simply 'business as usual'. CRT is one of the fastest growing and most controversial fields of contemporary social theory, and education is the discipline where its most dynamic and challenging work is taking place. Now, answering the need for an authoritative reference work to make sense of this sometimes shocking and often contentious body of thought, Routledge announces a new title in its Major Themes in Education series. In four volumes, Critical Race Theory in Education provides a unique 'mini library' that encompasses the very best CRT scholarship in education. As with other titles in the series, the collection's hallmark is its combination of the canonical and the cutting edge: every selection is either an established 'classic' or significantly challenges and advances thinking on current issues. The first volume ('Tenets of Critical Race Theory in Education') sets out the core themes that distinguish the CRT approach. Volume II ('Whiteness and White Supremacy'), meanwhile, explores the construction and maintenance of assumptions and practices that take for granted the elevated status of white people's interests and perspectives. The third volume ('Global and Specific: CRT Off-shoot Movements') focuses on the development of CRT as an approach with an international reach, while simultaneously retaining space for distinctive developments that prioritize individual social groups within their particular historic, cultural, and economic contexts. The collection's final volume ('Doing CRT in Education') is dedicated to questions of method, ethics, and praxis in the everyday struggle to advance research and effect genuine anti-racist change amid systems that normalize racism and deny the legitimacy of race-conscious scholarship. The collection has been assembled by an editorial team featuring some of the leading US and UK-based scholars in educational critical race theory.

Strengthening the African American Educational Pipeline - Informing Research, Policy, and Practice (Hardcover): Jerlando F. L.... Strengthening the African American Educational Pipeline - Informing Research, Policy, and Practice (Hardcover)
Jerlando F. L. Jackson; Foreword by Gloria Ladson-Billings
R1,725 Discovery Miles 17 250 Out of stock

Focusing on pre-K-12 schools, higher education, and social influences, this book examines the following question: What systemic set of strategies is necessary to improve the conditions for African Americans throughout the educational pipeline?Comprehensive in its approach to representing the educational experiences of African Americans over the life course, this book fills an important gap in the literature. - James Earl Davis, coeditor of African American Males in School and Society: Practices and Policies for Effective EducationJerlando F. L. Jackson accomplishes the difficult task of helping us understand the complexities involved in getting the African American student from school to the workplace. While seemingly simple, the multiplicity of factors which emerge and impact the educational process must be understood by researchers, policy makers, and educators as we all become partners in the process to improve the conditions and experiences of African Americans in education. Jackson provides us with manageable ways to learn and begin to understand the systemic implications of this process in his book. - Barbara M. Pulliam, Superintendent, Clayton County Schools, Jonesboro, GeorgiaThis volume provides an important window to the pipeline problem. It also offers some viable solutions. If we do the work it challenges us to do, then we hope that the next generation will have no need for a book that calls for strengthening the pipeline. - from the Foreword by Gloria Ladson-BillingsThis book is a must read for all policy agents responsible for making decisions in reference to African Americans in education and will surely emerge as the seminal piece on this topic. - Congresswoman Gwendolynne S. Moore, 4th District of Wisconsin.
