Alcoholism - New Knowledge and New Responses: Griffith Edwards, Marcus Grant Alcoholism - New Knowledge and New Responses
Griffith Edwards, Marcus Grant
R3,176 Discovery Miles 31 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1977, alcoholism was acknowledged to be a seriously growing problem in many parts of the world. It is a complex disorder with psychiatric, physical, psychological and social aspects, having far reaching harmful effects on the family and society, as well as on physical and mental health of the alcoholic themself. At the time of original publication it had been estimated that in England and Wales 11 out of every 1,000 in the adult population had a serious drink problem, and alcoholism was a major cause of admission to psychiatric and general hospitals. Alcoholism was a medico-social problem of such magnitude that this comprehensive volume, embodying advances in knowledge of causation, treatment and prevention filled an urgent need at the time. Still a major concern today this reissue can be read in its historical context.

Alcoholism Treatment in Transition: Griffith Edwards, Marcus Grant Alcoholism Treatment in Transition
Griffith Edwards, Marcus Grant
R3,174 Discovery Miles 31 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1980, the purpose of this book was to aid a process of rethinking alcoholism treatment. Such a process was already underway in many parts of the world at the time. It was hoped that this volume would be useful in the modest role of abetting such a rethinking. Alcoholism treatment was definitely in transition, abandoning old certainties, searching for new syntheses and that is the position this book takes looking for an alternative understanding. The book is divided into six parts: Transition as Challenge; Does Treatment Work?; Towards Better Questions and Better Methodologies; Treatment System as Case For Study; Models in Transition; and Alcohol Agendas. The book also contains one chapter that discusses alcoholism treatment in a developing country, not often addressed at the time but acknowledgement that the problem is a global one.

Addiction and the Making of Professional Careers (Hardcover, New): Griffith Edwards Addiction and the Making of Professional Careers (Hardcover, New)
Griffith Edwards
R2,544 Discovery Miles 25 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The misuse of drugs continues to cause suffering and worldwide economic turmoil. In response to these problems, many have devoted their lives to preventing the misuse of mind-altering substances. Addiction and the Making of Professional Careers focuses on the need for enhanced understanding of professional careers in the addiction field. The spectrum of professionals involved is wide and includes treatment personnel of every kind.

Some of the questions examined here include: Why do some people decide to dedicate their lives to responding to drug problems? How do and should we select, train, mentor, support, inspire, and nurture the young career aspirant? What makes for the most effective use of talent? Is every personal case different or can general conclusions be reached?

After a foreword by William Miller and an introduction by Griffith Edwards, the book includes interviews with Joseph Brady, Louis Harris, Conan Kornetsky, and Robert DuPont, all of whom were pioneers in the behavioral pharmacological analysis of addiction. Commentary chapters are written by Kerstin Stenius, Ilana Crome, Peter Anderson, and Jonathan Chick.

Physician to the Fleet - The Life and Times of Thomas Trotter, 1760-1832 (Hardcover, New): Brian Vale, Griffith Edwards Physician to the Fleet - The Life and Times of Thomas Trotter, 1760-1832 (Hardcover, New)
Brian Vale, Griffith Edwards
R2,196 Discovery Miles 21 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Details Thomas Trotter's important contributions, as a naval surgeon and after, to the eradication of scurvy and typhus, to the study of addiction, and to improved health and safety in mines. Thomas Trotter, after studying medicine at Edinburgh, began his naval career as a surgeon's mate in 1779 and saw continuous service up to the peace of 1802, rising as a result of great abilities and the right patronage to become Physician to the Channel Fleet, and being present at the great battles of Dogger Bank in 1781 and the Glorious First of June in 1794. As Physician to the Channel Fleet, he was a major player in the conquest of scurvy and the control of typhus and smallpox in the navy. After the peace he settled in Newcastle where he produced pioneering work on alcoholism and neurosis, as a result of which he is regarded as one of the founders of the field of addiction studies. This book provides an intimate account of naval life in the great age of sail from the perspective of a surgeon, describing the impact of Enlightenment ideas and new medical techniques, and showing how improved health was a crucial factor in making possible the British fleet's great victories in this period. BRIAN VALE is a maritime historian, whose books include Independence or Death: British sailors and Brazilian Independence (Tauris 1996), A Frigate of King George, Life and Duty on a British Man-of-War (Tauris 2001) and The Audacious Admiral Cochrane (Conway 2004). GRIFFITH EDWARDS, Emeritus Professor at King's College, London, is one of the country's leading experts on addiction. His publications include Alchohol: the Ambiguous Molecule (Penguin 2000) and Matters of Substance (Penguin 2005).

The Animal Kingdom - Arranged in Conformity with its Organization (Paperback): Georges Cuvier The Animal Kingdom - Arranged in Conformity with its Organization (Paperback)
Georges Cuvier; Edited by Edward Griffith, Edward Pidgeon
R1,665 Discovery Miles 16 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Georges Cuvier (1769-1832), made a peer of France in 1819 in recognition of his work, was perhaps the most important European scientist of his day. His most famous work, Le Regne Animal, was published in French in 1817; Edward Griffith (1790-1858), a solicitor and amateur naturalist, embarked on in 1824, with a team of colleagues, an English version which resulted in this illustrated sixteen-volume edition with additional material, published between 1827 and 1835. Cuvier was the first biologist to compare the anatomy of fossil animals with living species, and he named the now familiar 'mastodon' and 'megatherium'. However, his studies convinced him that the evolutionary theories of Lamarck and St Hilaire were wrong, and his influence on the scientific world was such that the possibility of evolution was widely discounted by many scholars both before and after Darwin. Volume 12 covers molluscs and radiata.

Psychotherapy, Psychological Treatments and the Addictions (Paperback): Griffith Edwards, Christopher Dare Psychotherapy, Psychological Treatments and the Addictions (Paperback)
Griffith Edwards, Christopher Dare
R1,124 Discovery Miles 11 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Treatment of an ever-increasing variety of addictive behaviours owes much to a wide range of psychotherapeutic approaches which have tended to roll continuously in and out of fashion. Over recent years, an initiative has been established to appraise critically the use of psychotherapy in all areas of psychiatry. This work serves as a timely review of psychological treatments in the addictions field and provides a rare combination of expertise both from addiction specialists and those who use psychotherapeutic approaches to solve a wide range of personal problems. Its coverage includes contextual ideas which are basic to the choice of approach to therapy, and an exploration of particular treatment strategies. Throughout, this volume is able both to provide authoritative statements and to engage the reader in the excitement of debate. It forms a valuable reference which is sure to appeal to a wide range of practitioners and researchers concerned with alcohol and drug problems.

Alcohol is everywhere. Walk down any street in the western world and before long your feet will kick against an empty beer can, or your attention will be captured by an alluring advertisement that suggests that alcohol can magically transform your life. Its use is integral to many aspects of popular culture, but it is also a substance that has at times been preached against and even prohibited.

In this book, Griffith Edwards uses both history and chemistry to explore the whole issue of alcohol. Is it medicine, a delightful potion, poison, or a mysterious combination of all three? What part has alcohol played in various cultures and religions? Why do different people behave differently when drunk? What cures for habitual inebriation were popular in the past? Why is alcoholism considered a disease? What is "safe drinking"? Is alcohol good for the heart? Do current treatments work? Does Alcoholics Anonymous have the answer?

Armed with the best solid information science, history, and sociology have to offer, Edwards asks how, in the light of this knowledge, society might in the future better handle this pleasure-giving, somewhat dangerous drug. Can society get its pleasure out of alcohol without the inevitable suffering that accompanies misuse? If so, what steps should we take to protect ourselves and others?

Already considered in England to be a classic in the field, Alcohol will prove to be fascinating reading for the drinker and nondrinker alike.
