From 1893-1895 George Griffith was the most famous science fiction writer in England. His books entranced the readers of the 19th century with tales of Martians, submarines, immortality, rogue comets and even spaceships whizzing around the solar system. He invented the Countdown in 1897 and his son would become the co-inventor of the jet engine. Griffith's name became synonymous with high adventure and so in the Spring of 1894 he was recruited to follow in the mythical footsteps of Jules Verne's Phileas Fogg. In just 65 days Griffith travelled through 24 time zones and established a new world record. Now for the first time in over 100 years his story can be retold along with a lengthy biography of his many literary achievements by noted Space writer and editor, Robert Godwin. It includes a special Introduction by John Griffith, grandson of George Griffith.
For over a century, teachers, parents, and school leaders have lamented a loss of 'discipline' in classrooms. Caught between guidance approaches on the one hand and a call for zero tolerance on the other, current debates rarely venture beyond the terrain of implementation strategies. This book aims to reinvigorate thinking on 'discipline' in education by challenging the notions, foundations, and paradigms that underpin its use in policy and practice. It confronts the understanding of 'discipline' as purely repressive, and raises the possibility of enabling forms and conceptualizations of 'discipline' that challenge tokenistic avenues for students' liberation and enhance students' capacity for agency. This book is an essential resource for university lecturers, pre-service and in-service teachers, policymakers, and educational administrators who want to re-think 'discipline' in education in ways that move beyond a concern with managing disorder, to generate alternative understandings that can make a difference in students' lives.
In recent years there has been a growing concern for the development of both efficient and effective ways to handle space-time problems. Such developments should be theoretically as well as empirically oriented. Regardless of which of these two arenas one enters. the impression is quickly gained that contemporary wO, rk on dynamic and evolutionary models has not proved to be as illuminating and rewarding as first anticipated. Historically speaking. the single. most important lesson this avenue of research has provided. is that linear models are woefully inadequate when dominant non-linear trends and relationships prevail. and that independent activities and actions are all but non-existent in the real-world. Meanwhile. one prominent imp 1 ication stemming from this 1 iterature is that the easiest modelling tasks are those of specifying good dynamic space-time models. Somewhat more problematic are the statistical questions of model specification. parameter estimation. and model validation. whereas even more problematic is the operationalization of evolutionary conceptual models. A timely next step in spatial analysis would seem to be a return to basics. with a pronounced focus both on specific problems (and data) and on the mechanisms that transform phenomena through space and/or time'. It appears that these transformation mechanisms must embrace both non-linear and autoregressive formalisms. Given. also. the variety of geographic forms. they must allow for bifurcation points to emerge. too.
