Preventing Corruption explores the problems involved in the
contemporary investigation, enforcement and governance of
international corruption, identifying that no one country or
culture has a monopoly on corruption, as it ranges across the
social spectrum and different cultures. This unique international
coverage explores the level of corruption in different public and
private sectors of business for individuals and organizations
around the world and highlights that some individuals and
organizations benefit from corruption regardless of geographical
location. It also examines the limits of current anti-corruption
strategies, laws and conventions and considers the involvement of
western democratic states in corruption, the concept of state
capture and the corrupt use of private military organizations in
conflict zones around the world. This diverse critical analysis of
international corruption includes under-explored areas such as
bribery, whistle blowing and the use of private bodies and will be
a highly valuable tool for scholars and practitioners alike.
This book is devoted to Israel's asymmetric wars, those conducted
against irregular armed groups that have attacked it. It seeks to
understand the Israeli strategy in the fight against terrorists
acting under the guise of civilians or using the population as
human shields. The army has implemented a loosely devised, if not
simplistic, doctrine of "disproportionate response" since Israel's
founding. The results have been mediocre, nearly always leading to
the death of innocent Arab civilians and exacerbating anti-Israeli
sentiment. Each time it has led to an escalation that is difficult
to control and thrown the entire country into an increasingly
inextricable situation. Practically every time it has made Israel,
the aggressed party, look like the aggressor. What explains such
perseverance? This research is based on vast documentation
collected in Israel as well as on more than 60 in-depth interviews
with officers and simple soldiers, senior counterterrorism
officials, politicians, journalists and NGOs.
This is the first book on the market to cater to two growing
populations, martial artists and baby boomers. Once a blood and
guts sport for tough young men, martial arts is now touted by
athletes, aerobics trainers, actors, super models and soccer mums
as the number one way for adults to get fit and stay in shape. This
book addresses important questions like: How old is too old start a
marital art?; What type of exercises are best (and which ones are
dangerous) for the over-40 martial artist?; What are the effects of
ageing and how can martial arts combat them?; How can baby boomers
keep up in a martial arts class full of gen-Xers?; What types of
injuries are most prevalent after 40 and how can they be prevented?
This book takes a positive and enthusiastic approach to taking up
or continuing a martial art in middle age or later. Readers will be
inspired, reassured and educated.
Phenomena associated with the adhesion interaction of surfaces have
been a critical aspect of micro- and nanosystem development and
performance since the first MicroElectroMechanicalSystems(MEMS)
were fabricated. These phenomena are ubiquitous in nature and are
present in all systems, however MEMS devices are particularly
sensitive to their effects owing to their small size and limited
actuation force that can be generated. Extension of MEMS technology
concepts to the nanoscale and development of
NanoElectroMechanicalSystems(NEMS) will result in systems even more
strongly influenced by surface forces. The book is divided into
five parts as follows: Part 1: Understanding Through Continuum
Theory; Part 2: Computer Simulation of Interfaces; Part 3: Adhesion
and Friction Measurements; Part 4: Adhesion in Practical
Applications; and Part 5: Adhesion Mitigation Strategies. This
compilation constitutes the first book on this extremely important
topic in the burgeoning field of MEMS/NEMS. It is obvious from the
topics covered in this book that bountiful information is contained
here covering understanding of surface forces and adhesion as well
as novel ways to mitigate adhesion in MEMS/NEMS. This book should
be of great interest to anyone engaged in the wonderful and
fascinating field of MEMS/NEMS, as it captures the current R&D
activity.
Contemporary theologies of mission rely on the central concept of
the missio Dei, which states that mission properly belongs to the
triune God over the church. However, present accounts fail to
establish any corresponding link between God's trinitarian economy
and ontology. In other words, the problem of the missio Dei is the
problem of the break between the act and being of God. Benjamin H.
Kim argues that a repair is needed for missio Dei theology, and
this repair is found in reexamining Barth's doctrine of revelation.
In doing so, the locus of mission moves from God's trinitarian
sending to his trinitarian revealing. The repair is further
advanced by Dietrich Bonhoeffer through his concept of person,
which functions as the unity of act and being. This account returns
mission to its original definition, which was intended to describe
the inner-trinitarian being of God in relation to humanity. The
concept of person recovers this meaning of mission by locating it
first in the person of Christ and second, in the collective person
of the church existing as the Christ community. Thus, Bonhoeffer's
description of revelation in terms of personhood provides and
account that is more faithful to the missio Dei's core insights.
An authoritative survey of the scientific background for
therapeutic cancer vaccines, the challenges to their development,
and their current uses in treating cancer. The authors examine the
basic issues that effect all vaccines (such as immune adjuvants and
prime-boost strategies), describe the methods for antigen
discovery, and review the preclinical development phases for each
major vaccine strategy. They also spell out the clinical results
for cancer vaccines now beginning to be used in the treatment of
many common cancers.
At the end of the Cold War, the global economic system encountered
a new phenomenon in the field of knowledge creation and
technological innovation--the birth of mad technologies. This book
analyzes major changes in the national innovation systems (NIS) due
to the introduction of mad technologies in East Asia. The authors
find that mad technologies were the cause of stock market crashes
and economic uncertainties in the region and conclude that
successful corporations use various measures to neutralize mad
technologies and/or incorporate them into the NIS.
This third volume in the series covers such topics as advances in
working capital management.

Developed to comply with the fifth edition of the AASHTO LFRD
Bridge Design Specifications [2010]--Simplified LRFD Bridge Design
is "How To" use the Specifications book. Most engineering books
utilize traditional deductive practices, beginning with in-depth
theories and progressing to the application of theories. The
inductive method in the book uses alternative approaches, literally
teaching backwards. The book introduces topics by presenting
specific design examples. Theories can be understood by students
because they appear in the text only after specific design examples
are presented, establishing the need to know theories. The emphasis
of the book is on step-by-step design procedures of highway bridges
by the LRFD method, and "How to Use" the AASHTO Specifications to
solve design problems. Some of the design examples and practice
problems covered include: Load combinations and load factors
Strength limit states for superstructure design Design Live Load
HL- 93 Un-factored and Factored Design Loads Fatigue Limit State
and fatigue life; Service Limit State Number of design lanes
Multiple presence factor of live load Dynamic load allowance
Distribution of Live Loads per Lane Wind Loads, Earthquake Loads
Plastic moment capacity of composite steel-concrete beam LRFR Load
Rating Simplified LRFD Bridge Design is a study guide for engineers
preparing for the PE examination as well as a classroom text for
civil engineering students and a reference for practicing
engineers. Eight design examples and three practice problems
describe and introduce the use of articles, tables, and figures
from the AASHTO LFRD Bridge Design Specifications. Whenever
articles, tables, and figures in examples appear throughout the
text, AASHTO LRFD specification numbers are also cited, so that
users can cross-reference the material.

The Storyline of the Bible devotional was designed to provide an
overview of the narrative of the Bible--keeping you in the actual
text of the Bible with connecting overviews and questions that help
bridge the world of the Bible to our world today. Seeing the larger
Biblical narrative can dramatically change the way you understand
Christianity. Without this larger perspective, it's easy to view
the Bible as a collection of moralistic stories, subtlety leading
to a self-centered faith that essentially sees the Bible as a
divinely inspired self-help book. This approach gets us no where.
However, when you begin to grasp the grand narrative which begins
with those powerful four words, "In the beginning God..." you start
to realize that perhaps this life and this world is not about me,
but about a God whose plan for redemption is far greater than I can
imagine or hope. This is the good news that emerges as you connect
the many pieces of this life-changing drama. This devotional will
not only help you see the larger narrative but hopefully the main
Actor who graciously makes Himself known. "Many books are now
coming out on 'faith and work'-but I know of none like this. David
Kim gives us a way to reflect on our vocations and our lives in
light of the gospel and the Word-in prayer before the face of God.
There is deep theology here but it is not a textbook, but rather a
devotional guide. Unique--I recommend it " - Tim Keller, Senior
Pastor, Redeemer Presbyterian Church "A devotional book that feeds
our souls must at the very least draw us close to the God who has
redeemed us. This wonderful book certainly does that--but it does
much more. It points us to the Redeemer who, as the Sovereign Lord
of all creation, calls us to serve the goals of His glorious
Kingdom in our daily lives." - Richard Mouw, President, Fuller
Theological Seminary
This research investigates the impact of three equal cost
alternative labor market policies on the economic well-being of
low-income families and society in general at the turn of the 21st
century. The principal focus is on how changes in the minimum wage,
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), and payroll taxes influence the
well-being of low-income American families. The methods we employ
also reveal how much of the benefits from raising the minimum wage,
increasing the EITC, and reducing payroll taxes of workers in
low-income families accrue to families in the middle and upper
ranges of the income distribution. Thus, we consider the entire
distribution, but focus primary attention on families and persons
at or near the bottom of the income distribution.
The research reported in this book has three distinguishing
features. First, it examines and compares changes in the minimum
wage, the EITC, and payroll taxes using a common analytical
framework. There is considerable discussion of the impacts of
raising the minimum wage and increasing EITC payments. The research
reported here places these two policies in an "equivalent social
cost" framework and analyzes the distributional consequences of
each policy. In addition, we use the same equivalent cost paradigm
to investigate an alternative policy that rebates a portion of the
payroll taxes paid by workers in low-income families. A second
distinguishing feature of the research is that it incorporates
important insights from the poverty and income distribution
literature into the analysis of labor market policies and family
well-being. This literature suggests that any evaluation of success
or failure of poverty fighting policies thatincrease the minimum
wage, expand the EITC, or reduce payroll taxes requires that the
poor population be properly identified and poverty measured using
distribution sensitive measures of poverty and not simple
headcounts of the poor. Further, it is important to check for the
sensitivity of any conclusions about the policy choices to
alternative poverty lines. A third distinguishing feature of the
research is that we use important developments in the applied
welfare economics of income distribution to address the key
question: which policy alternative is best?

In 1929, Ronald Knox, a prominent member of the English Detection
Club, included in his tongue-in-cheek Ten Commandments for
Detective Novelists the rule that ?No Chinaman must figure in the
story.? In 1983, Ruth Rendell published Speaker of Mandarin,
reflecting not only a change in British detective fiction but also
a dramatic change in the British cultural landscape. Like much of
the rest of British popular culture, the detective novel became
more and more ethnically diverse and populated by characters with
increasingly varied religious backgrounds. The ten essays in this
work examine the changing nature of British detective fiction,
focusing on the shifting view of ?otherness? of such authors as
Rendell, Elizabeth George, Peter Ackroyd, Caroline Graham,
Christopher Brookmyer, Denise Mina, and John Mortimer. Unlike their
American counterparts, British detective writers have been until
recently, overwhelmingly white, and the essays here explore how
these authors delve into ethnic diversity within a historically
homogeneous culture. Religion has also played an important role in
the genre, ranging from the moral certainty of the early part of
the 20th century to the skepticism and hostility that is part of
contemporary fiction. How this transition was made and how it
reflects the changing nature of British culture are detailed here.

Addressing the themes of Korean nationalism and gender construction, as well as issues related to colonialisation and decolonialisation of Korea, leading scholars discuss how Korea can still be seen as an 'imaginary' and 'gendered' nation.
"Dangerous Women" addresses the themes of Korean nationalism and
gender construction, as well as various issues related to the
colonialization and decolonialization of the Korean "nation,"
Leading scholars discuss how Korea, as a result of years of foreign
domination, can still be seen as an "imaginary" and "gendered"
nation--as a metaphor, even, for Korean women both there and
abroad. Together, these essays explore the troubled category of
"woman," placing it in the specific context of a marginalized and
colonized nation.
Yet Korean women are not configured here merely as metaphors for
an emasculated and enfantilized "homeland." They are also shown to
be by-products of a problematic gender construction that originates
in Korea, and extends even today to Korean communities beyond Asia.
Representations of Korean women still attempt to confine them to
the status of either mother or prostitute: "Dangerous Women"
rectifies that construction, offering a feminist intervention that
might recuperate womanhood.
