"What kinds of investors actually choose to make their living by seeking out troubled companies and becoming mired in the complexities and contentiousness of a bankruptcy or out-of-court workout?" - Hilary Rosenberg (from The Vulture Investors)
The first in over half a century to be devoted to a detailed analysis of the complete Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano, this book arose from the author's desire to pass on to a younger generation more than sixty years' experience as a practising musician and teacher. Professor Rostal addresses himself to professional and amateur musicians alike, to students and to listeners, all of whom will derive pleasure and enlightenment from his words. Each of the ten Sonatas is carefully discussed, the manuscripts and first and later editions meticulously compared. Musicians will find technical and interpretative problems approached and solved and the music-lover a helpful listener's guide to these ever-popular masterpieces. As the Amadeus Quartet's Preface says of this important book, It is a "must" for all students and performers, and is a "must" for all lovers of Beethoven.' A renowned violinist and teacher, Professor MAX ROSTAL studied music under Arnold Ros138> and Carl Flesch. Founder and President of the European String Teachers' Association, he has made many recordings and is the editor of numerous wirks in the violin repertoire.
A fascinating biography of the visionary behind the shareholder activist movement "Bob Monks is a truly rare creature, not only a businessman turned political activist, which is rare enough, but an activist in and on behalf of business, which makes him virtually unique." —Nelson W. Aldrich, Jr. author, Old Money: The Making of America's Upper Class. "A Traitor to His Class is a fascinating account of an idealistic visionary in action." —Ben Makihara, Chairman, Mitsubishi Corporation. "A superbly written book that provides a fascinating and candid insight on the brilliant but complex Bob Monks. A must read for any director, corporate shareholder, or employee of a public enterprise." —L. Dennis Kozlowski, Chairman and CEO, Tyco International Ltd. "One of the most interesting players in the development of corporate governance has been (the often controversial) Bob Monks. This well-written and lively biography puts him and his role in perspective—scholars, for information, and CEOs, for survival, ought to read it." —John Biggs, Chairman, President and CEO, TIAA-CREF. "An interesting story of one of the early proponents of changes in corporate governance and a formidable personal opponent in several corporate battles." —Martin Lipton, Esq., Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. "Read historically, it's the story of an original voice who reminded boards and managements that they had shareholders to whom they were accountable, a reminder that drives modern corporate governance. Read personally, it's the portrait of an idealistic, driven man on a mission, impaired at times by ego and wants common to all human beings. Read closely, it's the fascinating detail of the frustrations and exhilaration of exercising good-faith shareholder activism." —Ira M. Millstein, Esq., Weil, Gotshal & Manges. Ask anyone who knows Robert Monks to describe him, and words such as "visionary," "determined," and "passionate" will surface. He is, in fact, all this and much more. At six-foot-six, he is a formidable presence, but the respect he demands has less to do with his physical stature than with his influential status as a driving force behind the shareholder activist movement — an initiative that began as a self-proclaimed "mission" to improve corporate governance and accountability, and that is now an integral part of contemporary business and investing. Now, the remarkable history of the movement and one of its pioneers is told. Though born into a wealthy and powerful Boston family whose roots were established in New England before the Revolution, Robert Augustus Gardner Monks was never intent on simply leading a life of privileged luxury. Driven by a deep desire to make himself "useful to the world," he took steps to meet this end. He graduated from Harvard University —Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude—and Harvard Law School, and subsequently joined Boston's second largest law firm where he became one of its youngest partners ever. Monks then embarked on a new path which led him towards his ultimate goal of far-reaching public service. Vividly tracing his extraordinary journey, A Traitor to His Class follows Monks's experiences as businessman, corporate attorney, venture capitalist, regulator, and finally, shareholder activist. Written with exclusive access to Monks himself, as well as his collection of notes, speeches, and correspondence, it covers his numerous accomplishments —as well as a few defeats. Included are his term as the Department of Labor's pensions administrator; his bid for the Sears board of directors, a run that won him recognition as "the leader of the battle to reform American corporate governance"; and his three attempts at the Senate, all of which were invaluable training for the guerrilla war he would wage on big business. Instrumental to his battle is his brainchild, Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS), which today handles voting for hundreds of corporate and government pension funds and represents a deciding factor in many contentious proxy votes at large companies both here and abroad. A Traitor to His Class intricately details ISS's growing impact, as well as that of the Lens Fund, whose forays into poorly managed corporations have set new precedents for shareholder activism. The biography of a man who dared to demand that Corporate America be answerable to both its owners and society, A Traitor to His Class is an engaging and enthralling look at one of today's hottest, most controversial movements in business.
What place does consciousness have in the natural world? If we
reject materialism, could there be a credible alternative? In one
classic example, philosophers ask whether we can ever know what is
it is like for bats to sense the world using sonar. It seems
obvious to many that any amount of information about a bat's
physical structure and information processing leaves us guessing
about the central questions concerning the character of its
experience.

In the second half of the twentieth century the global theory of minimal surface in flat space had an unexpected and rapid blossoming. Some of the classical problems were solved and new classes of minimal surfaces found. Minimal surfaces are now studied from several different viewpoints using methods and techniques from analysis (real and complex), topology and geometry. In this lecture course, Meeks, Ros and Rosenberg, three of the main architects of the modern edifice, present some of the more recent methods and developments of the theory. The topics include moduli, asymptotic geometry and surfaces of constant mean curvature in the hyperbolic space.

Gold has held an historical allure since the beginning of recorded history. People are willing to go to great lengths in order to obtain what they see as financial security, and gold can seem like a very safe bet. The allure of gold can defy common sense, and, in many cases, it appeals to unsophisticated investors who are driven by fear. Like the prospectors before them, many today are willing to invest in something they know little about, and the results can be dire. The market for gold can be vicious and slick; it is filled with fear-based marketing campaigns. What is needed is a guide, an honest examination of the history and the current market for gold. This book is that guide.

At 19, Truman Miller is married to the meanest girl in town. Truman falls for the wide-eyed, copper-coiffed charms of Velma Vickus, his best friend's sister, before he understands that life with the perpetually dissatisfied Velma will be filled with frustration and heartache. A lively assortment of friends, family, and neighbors who populate the dwindling town of Whitney, Texas, watch helplessly as Truman is subjected to one cuckolding after another. Velma carries on with Truman's boss, with a local banker, with anyone who offers to enliven what she sees as a hopelessly uneventful life with her boring, bookworm husband. Truman's best friend, Kenny, is torn by his affection for Truman and loyalty to his sister, Velma. Kenny has a girlfriend, Lacey Evans, who lives with her agoraphobic mother and has few joys in life beyond TV preachers and her ill-tempered cat, Deuteronomy. Whitney is a typical small Texas town: it is filled with charming, crazy people. A crescendo of drama unfolds as Truman realizes the true state of his marriage, and he is faced with a choice: does he try to make things work with Velma, or does he leave Whitney and brave the unknown world beyond its dusty borders? Waking in a Wide Land is about difficult relationships, friendship, faith, and the urge to belong. At times rollicking, at times heartbreaking, this is a story that draws you into Truman's life and makes you want to stay.
Exciting new evidence from the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University has demonstrated that the body's decline is due not to the passing of years but to the combined effects of inactivity, poor nutrition, and illness -- much of which can be controlled. This breakthrough study shows that regardless of your age or present physical condition, the aging process can be slowed -- or even reversed! The authors have identified ten "biomarkers," the key physiological factors associated with prolonged youth and vitality: * lean body (muscle) mass With only 50 minutes a day of aerobic exercise and strength training (a pivotal component of the 16-week Bioaction Plan), even middle-aged "couch potatoes" and older adults can: * regain muscle loss and increase strength by as much as 200 percent Providing dietary guidelines, self-tests for evaluating your physiological age, and exercise programs for every level of fitness, Biomarkers will change forever the way you think -- and what you do -- about aging.
