MEET TRIGGER ARGEE. . . . Half a block from the shopping center, a row of spacers on planet-leave came rollicking cheerily toward her. . . . Trigger shifted toward the edge of the sidewalk to let them pass. As the line swayed up on her left, there was a shadowy settling of an aircar at the curb to her right. With loud outcries of glad recognition and whoops of laughter, the line swung in about her, close. Bodies crowded against her, a hand was clapped over her mouth. Other hands held her arms. Her feet came off the ground and she had a momentary awareness of being rushed expertly forward. There was a lurching twist as the aircar shot upward. SHE'S ABOUT TO ENTER THE MYSTERY OF HER LIFE -- IN LEGACY Ancient living machines that after millennia of stillness suddenly begin to move under their own power, for reasons that remain a mystery to men. Holati Tate discovered them -- then disappeared. Trigger Argee was his closest associate -- she means to find him. She's brilliant, beautiful, and skilled in every known martial art. She's worth plenty -- dead or alive -- to more than one faction in this obscure battle. And she's beginning to have a chilling notion that the long-vanished Masters of the Old Galaxy were wise when they exiled the plasmoids to the most distant and isolated world they knew. . . .
Hans-Christian Schmitz argues that a speaker has to utter a sentence in a way that makes the hearer perceive at least those words that are sufficient for understanding the entire sentence. In spoken language the speaker has to accentuate these words. Semantics effects of accentuation appear as epi-phenomena of their pragmatic function. The author defines a formal model for the interpretation of incompletely recognized sentences and derives a context-sensitive rule of accentuation. The rule of accentuation is experimentally evaluated.
On a bleak, distant uncharted world two ships lay wrecked and a lone man stared at a star hyacinth. Its brilliance burned into his retina . . . and he knew that men could easily kill and kill for that one beauty alone.
Africa represents the next frontier of the transnational politics of democratization. Recent efforts to promote human rights and democracy have yielded a mixed record of success. A comparison of regime change in Kenya and Uganda reveals how principled interventions have unintentional adverse effects on the democratic reform process. Persistent external efforts compromise the independence of domestic allies and strengthen those resisting democratic reforms. Domestic activists must carefully weigh the short-term benefits of transnational support against the harm it may cause.
John W. Campbell wrote this for a blurb for this tale when it appeared in "Analog" "He contracted for a charter trip -- but the man who hired his spacer wasn't quite a man, it turned out -- and he wanted more than service!" James H. Schmitz was a heck of a writer, and this story -- "The Winds of Time" -- is fascinating stuff. Star ships, aliens from the future, time travel, romance, cannibalism, pet humans, and mute-but-brilliant aliens. . . . and, of course, it's got a hero who solves every problem by being smarter and trickier and better-prepared than we'd ever imagine being. But what would you expect? This story first appeared in John W. Campbell's "Analog." "Analog" heroes did it with their brains. Us? We have to work.
This groundbreaking book presents a unique and practical approach to the evolving field of exercise oncology - the study of physical activity in the context of cancer prevention and control. Presenting the current state of the art, the book is sensibly divided into four thematic sections. Following an opening chapter presenting an overview and timeline of exercise oncology, the chapters comprising part I discuss primary cancer prevention, physical activity and survivorship, and the mechanisms by which these operate. Diagnosis and treatment considerations are discussed in part II, including prehabilitation, exercise during surgical recovery, infusion and radiation therapies, and treatment efficacy. Post-treatment and end-of-life care are covered in part III, including cardio-oncology, energetics and palliative care. Part IV presents behavioral, logistical and policy-making considerations, highlighting a multidisciplinary approach to exercise oncology as well as practical matters such as reimbursement and economics. Written and edited by experts in the field, Exercise Oncology will be a go-to practical resource for sports medicine clinicians, family and primary care physicians, oncologists, physical therapy and rehabilitation specialists, and all medical professionals who treat cancer patients.
Develops a highly original theory of accentuation in which accentuation serves the mere pragmatic function of making utterances well comprehensible. Semantic effects of accentuation are explained as epiphenomena of pragmatic accentuation. The theory is formally elaborated in a model-theoretic framework and experimentally justified.

James Henry Schmitz (1911-1981) was an American writer born in Hamburg, Germany of American parents. He is best known for space opera and strong female characters (such as Telzey Amberdon and Trigger Argee) that didn't fit into the damsel in distress stereotype typical of science fiction during the time he was writing. Included in this volume are "An Incident on Route 12," "Watch the Sky," "The Winds of Time," and "Lion Loose."
