Tell el-Amarna is the modern name for the ancient Egyptian city of Akhenaten, situated in a bay of hills formed by the cliffs of the eastern desert about halfway between Cairo and Luxor. The city was founded in the 14th century BC by the Pharaoh Akhenaten to be a royal palace for himself and his wife Nefertiti, the capital of all Egypt, and the center of the state cult of the Sun God in the form of Aten (sun disc), which became an obsession of the Pharaoh. The city contained temples, palaces, state buildings and great private mansions, but was abandoned by Akhenaten’s successor, his son Tutenkhamen. The city was demolished, never to be re-inhabited. This volume presents a detailed, illustrated catalogue of the many statues, statuettes, reliefs, inlays and inscriptions recorded and collected by Flinders Petrie, together with glass and faience objects and moulds. Part II provides a summary of developments in royal names and titles with a discussion on research into names and evidence of royal status. This series comprises facsimile re-issues of typological catalogues produced between 1898 and 1937 by W.M. Flinders Petrie, based on his vast collection of Egyptian artefacts which now reside in The Petrie Museum of Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology, University College, London. Long out of print, the catalogues were re-issued in facsimile by publishers Aris & Phillips in the 1970s alongside newly-commissioned titles by contemporary experts. Petrie’s catalogues remain invaluable source material today. The three civil wars that wracked England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, between 1642-1651 saw a greater percentage of the population killed than in the First World War. Hartlebury Castle, the home of the bishop of Worcester, saw involvement in all three wars. If you look for it in books on the civil war you will rarely find it mentioned and yet it was one of the two main fortresses guarding the north of the county and also a vital communication route for the Royalist troops from Wales and Ireland. Its troops were involved in skirmishes and battles and yet, when it was besieged in 1646, the governor of the Castle, William Sandys, is said to have surrendered without a shot being fired. A contemporary chronicler described this as done 'most poorly and cowardly'. Was this a justified accusation or did Sandys have no choice?

The energy short-falls of the 1970's made clear both individual and national vulnerability when reliance is on a single energy source such as petroleum. Further, the situation was a sharp reminder that fossil fuels are finite and that their supplies will become limiting. Whether short supplies are for political, economical, or geological reasons, they signal the need to plan for a future with diverse options so.that needs can be met without disruptive consequences when supplies of one source become limiting. Conservation plays a major role in any strategy; however, it should be recognized that such steps can only "buy time" by extending the supply - not create new energy supplies. Proven petroleum reserves in the United States currently are stated to be equivalent to only 8 years consumption at current rates assuming no imports or additional petroleum discoveries. Another important strategy is to develop biomass, solar and other alternative energy supplies and integrate their use into contemporary society. A fundamental difference between fossil fuels and biomass involves the concept of stock versus flow resources. For example, the amount of crude oil is basically a fixed or stock level which is being rapidly mined."
