Literary Theory and Criticism: An Introduction provides an
accessible overview of major figures and movements in literary
theory and criticism from antiquity to the twenty-first century. It
is designed for students at the undergraduate level or for others
needing a broad synthesis of the long history of literary theory.
An introductory chapter provides an overview of some of the major
issues within literary theory and criticism; further chapters
survey theory and criticism in antiquity, the Middle Ages and
Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the nineteenth century. For
twentieth- and twenty-first-century theory, the discussion is
subdivided into separate chapters on formalist, historicist,
political, and psychoanalytic approaches. The final chapter applies
a variety of theoretical concepts and approaches to two famous
works of literature: William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Mary
Shelley's Frankenstein. The new edition has been updated
throughout, including expanded coverage of Marxist theory,
Disability Studies, and Critical Race Theory.
The Institutional Position of Seaports deals with the logic and
functioning of international seaport administration. This volume
not only contains interesting reading for public and private port
administrators and managers but can offer by its international
comparisons relevant insights for the deregulation, privatisation,
liberalisation and deconcentration of former government duties.
Every seaport hosts different port activities in which public and
private actors interact in changing relations. There is a permanent
question of how responsibilities among public port administrators
and the private users of the port have been divided and
institutionally anchored. The unique model of analysis as used in
this research has been built up by the distinction in four
different control relations between state and market. By means of
this institutional model the division of responsibilities for
nautical control, port planning and port services can be
determined. The reader can also learn via this model about the
specific conditions that are needed to activate the learning
capabilities of the different port activities. The model of
analysis can be applied to every seaport in the world. Audience:
This book is essential for everyone who is in a public or private
managing or policy-making position in a seaport. It can also be of
great help to students in disciplines like maritime economics,
strategic management, social geography and public administration;
for example, to make them more aware of the specific role divisions
and mechanisms between state and market in international seaports.
"Air Transport and the European Union" investigates the emergence
of the EU as a major policy actor in aviation and examines how
Europeanization has transformed the governance, organization and
structure of the sector since the mid-1980s. It addresses the
question of how, when a detailed regulatory system already existed,
the EU was able to establish its own policy-making competence and
to override the wishes of the majority or member states opposed to
EU involvement.
Everybody knows, and maybe even loves, a microgenre. Plague
romances and mommy memoirs. Nudie-cutie movies, Nazi zombies, and
dinosaur erotica. Baby burlesks, Minecraft fiction, grindcore,
premature ejaculation poetry...microgenres come in all varieties
and turn up in every form of media under the sun, tailor-made for
enthusiasts of all walks of life. Coming into use in the last
decade or so, the term "microgenre" classifies increasingly
niche-marketed worlds in popular music, fiction, television, and
the Internet. Netflix has recently highlighted our fascination with
the ultra-niche genre with hilariously specific classifications --
"independent supernatural dramedy featuring a strong female lead" -
that can sometimes hit a little too close to home. Each
contribution in this collection introduces readers to a different
microgenre, drawn from a range of historical periods and from a
variety of media. The Microgenre presents a previously untreated
point of cultural curiosity, revealing the profound truth that
humanity's desire to classify is often only matched by the
unsustainability of the obscure and hyper-specific. It also
affirms, in colorful detail, what most people suspect but have
trouble fathoming in an increasingly homogenized and commercial
West: that imaginative projects are just that, imaginative,
diverse, and sometimes completely and hilariously inexplicable.
The phenomenon of international seaport administration is the
subject of this book. As a Ph.D.-student at the Delft University of
Technology (period 1993 - 1997) I had the opportunity to develop
and exercise my hobby on a full time base. The result was a
Ph.D.-dissertation which was defended in December 1997.
Unfortunately, these research results were published in Dutch while
the majority of the interviewees and employees in the world of
international seaport administration are English speaking people.
Both for the reason of high international relevance of the results
I felt the necessity to get this Ph.D.-research translated and
published in English. With the excellent help of my promotor
Prof.dr. W.G.M. Salet I found Prof.dr. H. van der Wusten prepared
to cover this study on international seaport administration in the
Kluwer GeoJournal Library series. I thank Mr. Van der Wusten for
giving me this opportunity. But also due to the outstanding help of
my current employer 'Zeeland Seaports Authority' the funding for
the translation became very quickly possible. I thank the Managing
Director of Zeeland Seaports Authority, Mr. J.M.H.G. Philippen, and
the Commercial Director, Capt. J. Verkiel, for their interest and
wonderful help in getting this study translated. And of course my
sincere thanks go to Katy Owen who actually made this dream come
true.
Air Transport and the European Union examines the emergence of the
EU as a major actor in aviation. It investigates how the EU was
able to develop a common policy despite the existence of an
established sectoral regime and against the opposition of most
European states and their 'flag carriers'.
At fifty-three years old, Trudy Quinn finds herself trying to find
reason to salvage her twenty-four year marriage gone stale. While
planning for her estranged husband's return from a tour in Iraq,
she's busy planning her daughter's engagement announcement while
shuffling her second career as President of a non-profit
organization. Everything seems to be coming together until a lost
letter shows up thirty-five years late, mailed in 1975. After
reading the letter, she realizes if she had received that letter on
time it would have changed her life. Little does she realize,
receiving that letter and her subsequent decisions would send her
on an emotional collision course that is about to change her life
again.
