Teaching is one of the most generative, selfless and inscrutable of
human encounters, requiring that we leave ourselves behind and that
we bring ourselves along, that we deny ourselves and use ourselves,
that we surmount our personal histories and rely on them to
understand personal histories in the making.
The raising of raspberries and the teaching of children became,
for me, companion activities. The one informed my understanding of
the other. The virtues of a gardener -- patience, realism,
regularity of effort, careful and long-term planning, are also the
virtues also of a teacher. A child wants tending as much as a
garden. The most beautiful strains of character or flower are often
the most fragile and require the most careful cultivation. Neglect
and a want of love are the greatest enemies of gardens and
children.
No more than flowers do habits of the mind and heart spring
full-grown. What is required of a gardener or a teacher is an
active and tireless labor that appreciates things as they are and
realistically imagines what they might become.
An Adventure that Spans Time and the Sea from the South Coast of
Maine to the Lands Behind the Northern Lights
Sim Spotswood decides not to keep his after school appointment
with Dr. McCreedy to get his teeth straightened. Instead he wanders
to the clam flats where Lost River meets the sea and where a Viking
ship, unearthed from the silt of a thousand years, sits like the
skeleton of a dragon in its cofferdam. Sim discovers buried in the
sand, a small medallion the size of a half dollar. That he should
be the one to find it is no accident. At least Dr. Asneath Plever
of the Smithsonian doesn't think so. Nor does Winifred Hazel Chit,
the Witch of thunderhead Cliff who has waited one hundred and
eleven years for Sim to undertake the adventure that now
unfolds.
As more of the medallions appear Sim encounters other searchers
including Splitface and Gold-Tipped-Smith who know the power of the
Starlight Medallions and want them for themselves. Sim, who has
never known his father, lies at night on the widows walk of his
home with his dog, Walter, watching the celestial canopy, waiting
for a shooting star upon which he can make his wish, the same wish
he has made every night for a long as he has known the words of the
wishing verse. Now as he travels with the Starlight Medallions to
places where no one has gone before, it seems that wish may come
true.
European integration can no longer be understood as a west European experiment mainly focused on functional and economic policy cooperation. The issues addressed include security and defense, as well as core concerns of European society. This volume explores three interlocking dimensions of integration; functional, territorial, and affiliational. Each dimension influences how countries across the continent engage with European integration. This first volume in the One Europe or Several? series identifies the agenda of research program, funded by the British Economic and Social Research Council.
Today's financial system is considerably more complex than in years
past, as new financial instruments have been introduced that are
not well understood even by the people and institutions that invest
in them. Numerous high-risk opportunities are available, and the
number of people who unwittingly wander into such ventures seems to
grow daily. There is also the realization that people's lives are
affected by the financial system without their overt participation
in it. Despite no active participation, pensions can be emasculated
by a sudden decline in interest rates, or a rise in rates can
increase the monthly payments on a mortgage, credit cards or other
debt. This book looks at the history of the American banking
system, including the passage of the Federal Reserve Act in 1913,
the implementation of deposit insurance, along with certain other
provisions of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, the Bretton-Woods
agreements, the forces of technological innovation and the
Dodd-Frank Act, passed by Congress in 2010 for regulatory reform.
This book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate level
students that want to gain a broad understanding of how the
financial system works, why it is important to the economy as a
whole, and what its strengths and weaknesses are. Also, readers
should gain an understanding of what the Federal Reserve, other
regulators and other central banks are doing, and will be in a
position to critique their actions and say with some depth of
understanding why they agree or disagree with them.
Thanks to new transparency rules and increased efforts by scholars,
researchers are better equipped than ever before to analyze the
decision-making processes of the Council of the European Union and
to test old wisdoms. This book covers the most contentious areas
and important debates in current research.

Regeneration, i.e. the replacement of lost body parts by new
outgrowths or by remodelling existing tissues, has been studied for
centuries. However, in recent years important developments took
place in this field too, owing to new soph isticated techniques and
to novel theoretical concepts. Advances in Molecular Genetics,
Biochemistry, Cell and Neurobiology, Immunology, to mention a few
of them, are the main causes of this resurgence of interest in
regeneration. As a consequence, more and more meetings and
pUblications are devoted, either exclusively or for a large part,
to basic and applied research of regenerative processes.
"Regeneration ists" scattered in laboratories allover the world and
accus tomed to know each other through exchange of reprints - occa
sionally an encounter in a large conference - tend now to form
small groups, even societies and to institutionalize their
meetings. Although the critical mass of scientists involved in
regeneration research does not seem yet to be reached, for an
autonomous development of this sector, regular and frequent
meetings of experts appear useful, even necessary. Such a meeting
was convened in Saronis, near Athens, Greece, from 19 to 23
September 1988 and sponsored by the NATO Science Committee and the
University of Athens. The present volume contains the contributions
to this Advanced Research Workshop on "Recent Trends in
Regeneration Research". About 50 biologists from different
countries, either mem bers of the Alliance or outside it (U.R.S.S.,
India, Egypt, Switzerland, Sweden) took part, mostly as invited
speakers.
