R42 Discovery Miles 420 Ships in 10 - 20 working days

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel star in this offbeat romantic comedy, the feature debut of music video director Marc Webb, which chronicles 500 days in the on/off relationship of Summer (Deschanel) and Tom (Gordon-Levitt). While Summer steadfastly refuses to believe in true love, asserting that real life will always get in the way in the end, Tom has thrown caution to the wind and fallen hook, line and sinker in love with her. Where can their so-called relationship lead?

Realizing a New Global Cyberspace Framework - Normative Foundations and Guiding Principles (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Rolf H. Weber Realizing a New Global Cyberspace Framework - Normative Foundations and Guiding Principles (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Rolf H. Weber
R3,705 R3,266 Discovery Miles 32 660 Save R439 (12%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In many respects cyberspace has created a new world. The online phenomena encompass social, cultural, economic, and legal facets. Exceeding the present Internet Governance concept the book analyses the normative foundations and guiding principles of a global cyberspace regime that includes the exchange of people, businesses, governments, and other entities. Based on this assessment and philosophical theories the book attempts to outline a model for a general legal framework enshrining key principles of civil society (such as human rights, ethics). The proposed global framework, not in the form of a multilateral treaty but a morally convincing declaration, could then be complemented by additional polycentric regulations with binding effect, developed on the basis of multistakeholder participation in a multi-layer concept.

Memory, Print, and Gender in England, 1653-1759 (Hardcover): H. Weber Memory, Print, and Gender in England, 1653-1759 (Hardcover)
H. Weber
R1,493 Discovery Miles 14 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines four seventeenth- and eighteenth-century writers concerned with the ways in which the commercial print trade was transforming traditional models of literary authority and immortality. While all were excited by the memorial potential of the printed book, they also betray a profound anxiety about how the new conditions of authorship would effect the transmission of cultural memory, and their ability to participate in and even control that process. This study contributes to the current pursuit--in both literary studies and the social sciences--of histories of memory in Western culture, employing current scholarship from the social and natural sciences to delineate the nature of modern memory.

George H. Weber
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This up-to-date bibliography of heretofore scattered references to nursing assistants includes literature pertinent to the construction of models to improve nursing assistant practice and emphasizes the psychosocial skills that are invaluable to the nursing assistant's work. Annotated reviews center on the tasks and context of nursing assistant work and ways to improve practice through training, organizational development, advocacy, and bargaining. Additional chapters present a tentative psychosocial model of nursing assistant practice, offer six intervention models, and investigate ways of further developing the nursing assistant occupation. Very highly recommended. Choice The role of the nursing home has expanded in the late twentieth century due to both the growing percentage of elderly in the U.S. population and to society's tendency to over-institutionalize people. In recent years, the kinds and quality of care given to the elderly in nursing homes have received intense scrutiny. This timely bibliography focuses on nursing assistants--the personnel who are with the elderly around the clock, doing a variety of tasks, ranging from helping them with basic functions to comforting them during periods of distress. Nursing assistants provide as much as 90 percent of the direct care received by the elderly in the nursing home setting. Emphasizing the psychosocial skills that make the nursing assistant's job so important to the well being of nursing home residents, Geriatric Nursing Assistants collects and annotates the heretofore scattered references to nursing assistants and includes literature pertinent to the construction of models that improve nursing-assistant practice. The first four chapters present the annotated reviews, which are organized in anticipation of the practice enhancement models discussed in Chapter Six. These reviews center on the tasks and context of the nursing assistant's work and on ways to improve practice through training, organizational development, advocacy, and bargaining. Chapter Five offers a tentative psychosocial concept of nursing-assistant practice that requires further development, detailing the various resident psychosocial circumstances to which the nursing assistant might respond helpfully and the kinds of interventions and techniques which the nursing assistant might attempt. In Chapter Six, intervention models--on inservice training, organizational development, advocacy, and bargaining--are presented in ideal-typical forms that recognize the limitations of daily practice; also, these models emphasize rigorous practice and its evaluation. Activities necessary to further develop the nursing-assistant occupation, including political action, are investigated in Chapter Seven, which also considers the moral aspects of a progressive agenda for nursing assistants. This reference seeks to improve services to nursing home residents and represents a valuable, practical contribution to the geriatric field. It will be useful to nursing home administrators and directors of nursing homes who must address ways to improve the working conditions of nursing assistants; to academicians in their research, training, and advocacy efforts; and to the training directors and supervisors in the field who can directly aid nursing assistants in the acquisition of needed knowledge and skills.

This book offers guidance for US-based IT businesses on both sides of the Atlantic when dealing with big data and government data, since transatlantic data flows are key to the success of these enterprises. It offers practical insights into many of the data-protection challenges US companies in various industries face when seeking to comply with US and EU data-protection laws, and analyses the potential conflicts in the light of their risks and the way in which US-based cloud providers react to the uncertainties of the applicable data-protection rules. The book particularly focuses on the insights derived from a qualitative study conducted in 2016 with various cloud-based IT businesses in the Silicon Valley area, which shows the diversity of views on data protection and the many approaches companies take to this topic. Further, it discusses key data-protection issues in the field of big data and government data.

Classification of Services in the Digital Economy (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Rolf H. Weber, Mira Burri Classification of Services in the Digital Economy (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)

R3,707 R3,225 Discovery Miles 32 250 Save R482 (13%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The classification of services in the digital economy proves critical for doing business, but it appears to be a particularly complex regulatory matter that is based upon a manifold set of issues. In the context of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), when the services classification scheme was drafted in the early 1990s, convergence processes had not unfolded yet and the internet was still in its infancy and not a reality in daily life. Therefore, policy makers are now struggling with the problem of regulating trade in electronic services and are in search of a future-oriented solution for classifying them in multilateral and preferential trade agreements. In late fall 2011, the authors of this study were mandated by the European Union, Delegation to Vietnam, in the context of the Multilateral Trade Assistance Project 3 (MUTRAP 3), to work out a report clarifying the classification of services in the information/digital economy and to assess the impact of any decision regarding the classifications on the domestic and external relations policy of Vietnam, as well as to discuss the relevant issues with local experts during three on-site visits.

R2,878 Discovery Miles 28 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Internet of Things as an emerging global Internet-based information archit- ture facilitating the exchange of goods and services is gradually developing. While the technology of the Internet of Things is still being discussed and created, the legal framework should be established before the Internet of Things is fully operable, in order to allow for an efective introduction of the new information architecture. If a self-regulatory approach is to be adopted to provide a legal framework for the Internet of Things, and this seems preferable, rulemakers can draw on experiences from the current regime of Internet governance. In the near future, mainly businesses will operate in the Internet of Things. Civil society is only expected to make use of the Internet of Things, as it now does of the Internet, at a later stage (e.g. for healthcare). The Internet of Things will have an impact in various areas. The regulatory fra- work must provide for provisions ensuring the security of the structure as well as the privacy of its users. Furthermore, legal barriers that may stand in the way of the coming into operation of the Internet of Things will have to be considered. However, the Internet of Things will also have positive efects in diferent felds, such as the inclusion of developing countries in global trade, the use of search engines to the beneft of civil society, combating product counterfeiting, tackling environmental concerns, improving health conditions, securing food supply and monitoring compliance with labor standards.

The information society is a key issue in everyday life and a phenomenon enc- passing social, cultural, economic, and legal facettes. Currently, an information society's legal framework is gradually crystallizing under the newly introduced term of "Internet governance." During the last few years, intensive discussions about the contents of Internet governance have addressed manifold aspects of a possible regulatory regime. In light of the general comprehension that an international treaty structure is mi- ing and that self-regulation as a normative model does not sufce in all respects, new architectural and constitutional theories have been developed; furthermore, the international body of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) came to life. N- withstanding the available literature on IGF, however, a thorough and systematic study sheding light on the main topics of Internet governance (such as legitimacy, transparency, accountability, and participation) and on the key regulatory issues (for example critical Internet resources, access, protection of civil liberties/- man rights, realization of security, safety and privacy standards, as well as the overcoming of the digital divide) from a legal perspective is not yet at hand. The present publication aims at discussing these legal challenges. This book has benefted from many inputs and encouragements from colleagues that I am deeply grateful for. Within the last decade, the Internet has developed as a phenomenon encompassing social, cultural, economic and legal facets. It has become common practice to use the Internet for both the retrieval and provision of information, with the result that the Internet has become a valuable tool in everyday life. Many Internet participants are unaware that they leave data tracks on every website they pass; surfing on the World Wide Web is far from being an anonymous activity of no consequence. In recent years a number of networking techniques have been initiated in order to accommodate the netizen's wish for anonymous communication and the protection of their privacy in the online world. Anonymization explores the legal framework developed to help protect netizens' privacy and their wish for anonymous communication over the Internet. It debates the value in helping to protect anonymity over a network which sees an increasing number of cybercrimes, and explores governmental interventions into anonymity requests, and whether requests should only be legal if a sufficiently legitimized public interest is given.

The Meyerhof Symposium on "Molecular Bioenergetics and Macromolecular Biochemistry" took place in Heidelberg from the 5th to the 8th of July, 1970. The timing was chosen to coincide with the creation of a new chair, in the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, in memory of OTTO MEYERHOF and the location was determined by the fact that so much of MEYERHOF'S scientific work was done in Heidelberg. The historical reason for the symposium was the urgent want of many leading biochemists and physiologists active in Molecular Biology to honour the memory of one of the greatest scientists in this field and also one of the greatest biologists of the 20th century. October 1971 is the twentieth anniversary of the death of OTTO MEYERHOF and 1972 marks 50 years since he was awarded the Nobel prize (1922). With regard to the age of some of his friends and pupils it was decided the symposium to be arranged in 1970, the first of the three commemorative years.
