CHAPTER H THE FRONT LINE OF BATTLE "Look " cried Ned, as the boys
and the Genie sailed along high in the air. "Look at the glare
below." "It's a fire," said Buster, "and a big one. . . . Oh, what
was that? It sounded like a horrible laugh." "The Genie " whispered
Joe, edging close. "He must have gone mad. Look at him. Oh, dear, I
didn't expect to be so afraid of him." The Genie seemed changed to
cutting flashes of red and black. His pointed feet and the curling
flame of his cap seemed to lick into the air like wicked forked
tongues, as he spun and leaped in a sort of wild dance that was as
terrible as it was graceful. His crackling laugh rang out
mockingly. Again the boys heard the shots of the battlefield, the
booming guns, the terrific explosions, and the cries of the wounded
and dying. Nearer and nearer they sounded. A sudden swoop of the
magic capes, over which the boys seemed to have no control, piloted
them into the thick of the fray Stinging shots burned their flesh
like coals of fire. Deafening crashes were followed by showers of
burning cinders which suffocated them. Clouds of fire rolled
through the air, splitting the darkness and choking then- voices.
For hours, it seemed, the boys were held fast in this terrible
agony. When the din of battle finally died away a bit, seeming to
shift its fiercest centers to other sectors, they could hear each
other moaning and crying in pain. It was a long time before their
parched throats could frame words withwhich to call a name or a
message. Ned's voice was the first to reach the consciousness of
the others. "It isn't fair," he was sobbing. "We hadn't a chance."
Tom heard him. Ned was voicing his own tortured feelings. "We
hadn't been trained for this," he answered, and indignation was
mixed with his pain...
