Internationalization of higher education can be defined as the
process of integrating an international/intercultural dimension
into the teaching, research, and service functions of the
institution. This comprehensive analysis describes and compares the
historical development of the internationalization of higher
education in the United States and Europe, as well as providing a
comparative and conceptual analysis of the current situation in the
field. The increasingly international focus of higher education is
dialectically related to the present globalization and
regionalization of our societies and markets. As a result, the
importance of quality assessment of internationalization strategies
has grown, international academic consortia and networks have
emerged, and English has been firmly established as the language of
communication in higher education.
The combination of historical, comparative, and conceptual
analysis of internationalization of higher education provides a
framework for further research and practice of this important trend
in higher education. First, de Wit describes and compares the
historical development of internationalization in higher education
in both the United States and Europe. In part two, the political,
economic, social/cultural and academic rationales for the
internationalization of higher education are described and a
critical analysis of the different meanings and definitions, as
well as organization models and strategies are provided. In the
last section, internationalization of higher education is placed in
the context of recent globalization.
This Handbook covers a wide range of historical perspectives,
realities, research and practice of internationalization of higher
education (IHE) in the global south and makes comparisons to IHE
issues in the global north. Drawing on the expertise of 32
academics and policy makers based in and originating from four key
regions of focus: Sub-Saharan Africa; North Africa and the Middle
East; Asia Pacific; Latin America and the Caribbean. Across 24
chapters the editors and contributors provide a diverse and
unparalleled expose of the status and future aspirations of
institutions and nations in relation to IHE. This is the first
comprehensive analysis of this growing field and expands the scope
of research in the field of comparative and international education
in terms of theory and policy development. Includes 36 chapters

In situ remediation techniques have experienced a boom over the
last few years, thereby producing a wide range of valuable
experiences. Their results have demonstrated that in situ
techniques are a mature alternative to conventional remediation
techniques. Irrespective of future policy developments, it is
impossible to imagine future remediation practice without the use
of in situ techniques. The book presents an overview of recent
developments in the field of in situ soil remediation. The book is
unique in that it is not a compilation of unrelated case studies. A
conceptual approach has been chosen; remediation models described
in this book are illustrated from a practical point of view. The
authors present the Dutch way of treating contaminated land; The
Netherlands is renowned for being at the forefront of remediation
techniques as a result of the country's progressiveness and
experience in this area.
* Offers a detailed analysis of global dimensions and trends in
international student mobility and recruitment, focusing on what
non-Anglophone countries are doing to attract international
students. * It examines current data on international student
flows, recruitment policies and instruments, obstacles and
opportunities for recruitment, and the role of different
stakeholders * Highly relevant given the changing global landscape,
as a result of geopolitical developments and tensions, increased
competition for global talent, health and sustainability concerns.

The Globalization of Internationalization is a timely text which
gives voice to emerging perspectives as an increasing range of
countries engage in the process of internationalization. The
pressure to internationalize cannot be ignored by institutions
anywhere in today's world, yet the dominant paradigms in the
conception of internationalization traditionally come from the
English-speaking world and Western Europe. This book sets out to
offer alternative viewpoints. Different dimensions and
interpretations of internationalization in countries and regions
whose perspectives have received little attention to date provide
food for thought, and help to broaden understanding of its
application in alternative contexts. Combining diverse perspectives
from around the world, this new volume in the Internationalization
in Higher Education series seeks answers to key questions such as:
What are the main characteristics of internationalization viewed
from different cultural and regional backgrounds and how do they
differ from traditional models such as in Western Europe, North
America and Australasia? What issues in different global contexts
have an impact on internationalization processes? What are the key
challenges and obstacles encountered in developing innovative and
non-traditional models of internationalization? With contributions
from world-renowned international authors, and perspectives from
countries and contexts seen only rarely in the literature, The
Globalization of Internationalization offers distinctive overviews
and insights while exploring a range of thematic and regional
issues arising from these considerations. This will be essential
reading both as an academic resource and a practical manual for
university leaders, academics, higher education policy advisers and
non-governmental organizations which fund higher education.
Co-published with AIEAInternational higher education has evolved,
in some respects dramatically, in the decade since publication of
the first edition of this handbook. The new issues, trends,
practices and priorities of research that evolved over this time
have in some instances been transformed by one of the most dynamic
and tumultuous periods in the history of international higher
education, brought on by the pandemic, a re-emergence of
nationalism, and the recognition of the power imbalances between
the developed economies and the global south, and racial inequities
within and across borders. This new edition addresses the myriad
changes across all aspects of international education, each chapter
addressing to the extent possible the reality of the present in
which they were written and offering some insights for the future.
While updating a number of chapters from the first edition, it also
includes a preponderance of new chapters written by contributors
representing wider and more diverse backgrounds. In keeping with
the first edition, the overall message is that the
internationalization of higher education has a vital role to play
in a world that is more interconnected than ever before.
Recognizing changing economic, geopolitical, climatic, and public
health issues, as well as the importance of international and
cross-cultural collaboration to address global problems, this
handbook offers a comprehensive range of models, data and ideas to
stimulate new directions in the conception and practice of
international education. This edition reflects today's concerns
around inclusion, diversity and equity, and how international
education is being changed by issues such as decolonization, the
focus on learning outcomes, the impact of digital tools to enhance
access and learning and collaboration such a virtual exchange,
competition for resources, risk, new patterns of mobility, and new
models such as joint programs and qualifications. As with the first
edition, the chapters often intentionally pair scholars and
practitioners from different parts of the world, and include text
boxes that highlight concrete institutional, national, or regional
experiences, providing diverse voices and perspectives from around
the world. This comprehensive new edition provides ideas, concepts,
theories and practical ideas from around the world for those
seeking to enhance the quality of the three core functions of
higher education: teaching, research and service to society. It
constitutes an essential resource for everyone involved in the
delivery of international education and in determining its future
direction.

For many in international education, assessment can seem daunting
and overwhelming, especially given that such efforts need to
involve much more than a pre/post survey. This book is a practical
guide to learning-outcomes assessment in international education
for practitioners who are starting to engage with the process, as
well as for those who want to improve the quality and effectiveness
of their assessment efforts. Assuming no prior knowledge, the book
offers an accessible and clear road map to the application of
assessment. Recognizing that a one size fits all approach cannot
capture the diversity of goals and settings of international
education, or the rich variety of programs and organizations
involved in delivering it, author Darla Deardorff provides the
reader with foundational principles and knowledge to develop
appropriate assessment approaches for evaluating and improving
student learning outcomes, which are the drivers of higher
education internationalizationShe provides the background for
assessment, highlights how the characteristics of international
education pose unique challenges for assessment, considers the
contexts to which assessment may be applied whether in cross-border
or at home institutional experiences, such as in curricular,
co-curricular or extracurricular settings and distills a seemingly
convoluted process into a manageable approach. From the basics of
getting started in assessment to highlighting pitfalls to avoid,
this book offers a holistic and practical approach to assessment
that moves beyond seeing assessment as a discrete activity to
on-going process that is integrated into student learning. There is
also a unique chapter for education leaders on assessment
essentials from a leadership-perspective. The appendices include
worksheets for implementing assessment, creating an assessment
team, and getting buy-in from stakeholders. Other appendices
include a list of standards adapted to international education
outcomes assessment, guidance on assessing intercultural
competence, and resources. This book reflects the author s
experience of over a decade of work with international education
programs and higher education institutions around the world, and
synthesizes what she has learned into an easy-to-use resource for
anyone who wants to understand and utilize effective assessment in
the field of international education. "

International Education at the Crossroads captures the essence and
complexity of international education in an interconnected and
globalized world. Written by leading scholars, international
educators, and policy makers, the 26 essays in this volume take
stock of the unpredictable landscape of international education and
demonstrate why international higher education is more essential
now than ever before. Responding to a timely global moment where
education and international engagement are being redefined and
practiced in new ways, the authors call for a reconsideration of
paradigms and critical reflection of the entire field of
international education. At the same time, the authors show how
international education is an imperative for the future of learning
and the world, and also, crucially, that this work cannot be done
in a silo. International Education at the Crossroads offers readers
a chance to join in the conversation that is as global as it is
meaningful in communities, the lives of learners, and institutions
around the world. International education requires that everyone
the world over work together to produce new knowledge, to navigate
the "crossroads," and to collectively chart the directions in which
the field will move into the future.
