This book provides a comprehensive overview of magnetic levitation
(Maglev) technologies, from fundamental principles through to the
state-of-the-art, and describes applications both realised and
under development. It includes a history of Maglev science and
technology showing the various milestones in its advancement. The
core concepts, operating principles and main challenges of Maglev
applications attempted across various fields are introduced and
discussed. The principle difficulties encountered when applying
Maglev technology to different systems, namely air gap control and
stabilization, are addressed in detail. The book describes how
major advancements in linear motor and magnet technologies have
enabled the development of the linear-motor-powered Maglev train,
which has a high speed advantage over conventional wheeled trains
and has the potential to reach speed levels achieved by aircraft.
However, many expect that Maglev technology to be a green
technology that is applied not only in rail transportation, but
also in diverse other fields; to ensure clean transfer in LCD
manufacturing, in ropeless high speed elevators, small capacity
rail transportation, space vehicle launchers, missile testers,
energy storage, and so on. These potential applications and their
unique challenges and proposed technological solutions are
introduced and discussed in depth. The book will provide readers
from academia, research institutes and industry with insights on
where and how to apply Maglev technology, and will serve as a guide
to the realization of their Maglev applications.

"Advanced Steels: The Recent Scenario in Steel Science and
Technology" contains more than 50 articles selected from the
proceedings of the International Conference on Advanced Steels
(ICAS) held during 9-11, Nov, 2010 in Guilin, China. This book
covers almost all important aspects of steels from physical
metallurgy, steel grades, processing and fabrication, simulation,
to properties and applications. The book is intended for
researchers and postgraduate students in the field of steels,
metallurgy and materials science. Prof. Yuqing Weng is an
academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and the president of
The Chinese Society for Metals. Prof. Han Dong is the vice
president of Central Iron & Steel Research Institute and the
director of National Engineering Research Center of Advanced Steel
Technology, China. Prof. Yong Gan is an academician of Chinese
Academy of Engineering, the vice president of Chinese Academy of
Engineering and the president of Central Iron & Steel Research
Institute, China.
This volume uses the concept of contact zones to reconceptualize
the time and space around East Asian borders as meeting zones where
multiple races, nations, cultures and religions interacted through
the processes of exchange, coexistence, and acculturation. Focusing
especially on the borderlands of China and Korea, the contributors
document the shifts and repositioning of the contact zones of East
Asia as well as the encounters and conflicts that transpired in
these spaces, with historical materials spanning the period from
the first to the early twentieth centuries and geographical regions
from the Tibetan Plateau to Manchuria to the Korean Peninsula. What
emerges is a rich account of how the historical changes in the
contact zones significantly shaped the history of East Asia as a
whole.

It is 1969 and China is in the throes of the Cultural Revolution.
The Taos face exile with stoicism and teach their son to embrace
reeducation wholeheartedly. Is this simple pragmatism, an attempt
to protect the boy and ensure his future? Or do the banished cadres
really cling to their belief in their leaders and the ideals of the
Revolution? These questions remain tantalizingly unanswered in this
prize-winning first novel.
