Integrating comparative empirical studies with cutting-edge theory,
this dynamic Handbook provides a comprehensive overview of the
study and practice of peacekeeping. Han Dorussen brings together a
diverse range of contributions which represent the most recent
generation of peacekeeping research, embodying notable shifts in
the kinds of questions asked as well as the data and methods
employed. The Handbook explores questions concerning the deployment
of peacekeepers, the policies and activities undertaken by
peacekeeping operations (PKOs), the intended and unintended
consequences of peacekeeping activities, and controversies related
to post-conflict crime, sexual and gender-based violence in
peacekeeping, and the environmental impact of PKOs. Chapters
further investigate the distinctions between UN and non-UN-led
PKOs, the specific mandates under which peacekeeping operates, and
the different roles of military, police, and police and civilian
peacekeepers. Concluding with an evaluation of the state of the art
of current peacekeeping literature, the Handbook leads the way in
developing a coherent agenda for future research. The Handbook will
be an essential resource for a cross-disciplinary audience of
academics and students interested in IR and conflict resolution.
Policymakers involved in peacekeeping and peacebuilding, as well as
NGOs operating within (post-) conflict settings, will also benefit
from its assessment of recent developments in peacekeeping
research.

Economic voting is a phenomenon that political scientists and economists can hardly overlook. There is ample evidence for a strong link between economic conditions and government popularity. However, not everything is that simple and this edited collection focuses on 'the comparative puzzle' of economic voting. Economic Voting emphasises the importance of comparative research design and argues that the psychology of the economic voter model needs to be developed further. eBook available with sample pages: 0203361512

This book assesses EU-Japan security relations, examining how they
have developed in individual security sectors and how they could be
affected by international developments. The conclusions of the
Economic Partnership Agreement and the Strategic Partnership
Agreement in 2017 demonstrate the steady growth in EU-Japan
political relations. Since the 1990s, dialogues between the EU and
Japan have benefitted from extensive trade and investment ties and
shared liberal values. Based on collaborative research by European
and Japanese scholars, this book provides an in-depth, systematic
and comparative analysis of the extent to which the EU and Japan
have achieved concrete actions in the pursuance of security
cooperation across a range of key areas such as nuclear
proliferation, regional security, international terrorism, and
energy and climate security. Further, it seeks to explain why some
security sectors (such as economic and cybersecurity) have resulted
in more extensive EU-Japan cooperation, while others lag behind
(such as military and regional security). Common declarations and
actions of shared interest and concerns have often led to only
modest levels of security collaboration, and the book highlights
factors that may be seen as intervening between intention and
action, such as the role of external actors, for instance China and
the US, and the constraints of internal EU and domestic Japanese
politics. This book will be of much interest to students of
European security, Japanese politics, diplomacy studies and
international relations.

Over the past decade, the EU and China have expanded their
relations beyond a focus on economic and trade issues to the sphere
of security. Taking a broad definition of security, a
multidisciplinary approach, and a comparative perspective
(including scholars from both Europe and China), this book provides
an in-depth analysis of the extent to which the EU and China not
only express similar threat concerns, or make declarations about
joint responses, but also adopt concrete measures in the pursuance
of security cooperation. In particular, the book seeks to explore a
range of key themes in the field of EU-China security cooperation
such as nuclear proliferation, international terrorist threats and
cyber attacks. Besides providing an overview of the areas where
security cooperation exists and where it does not, it also
highlights the aspects of convergence and divergence and the
reasons for their occurrence.

Globalization and Armed Conflict addresses one of the most
important and controversial issues of our time: Does global
economic integration foster or suppress violent disputes within and
between states? Here, cutting-edge research by leading figures in
international relations shows that expanding commercial ties
between states pacifies some, but not necessarily all, political
relationships. The authors demonstrate that the pacific effect of
economic integration hinges on democratic structures, the size of
the global system, the nature of the trade goods, and a reduced
influence of the military on political decisions. In sum, this book
demonstrates how important the still fragile "capitalist peace" is.
