The Bar with Antler Chandeliers (Hardcover): Harris T. Wood The Bar with Antler Chandeliers (Hardcover)
Harris T. Wood
R759 Discovery Miles 7 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"You might as well be hanging testicles from the ceiling because those poor boys never stood a chance. The minute they became men they took a step into the sights of a hunter's rifle." "Reeves," says the bartender. "You're shitfaced again, get the hell out of here." The Bar with Antler Chandeliers is the ensemble portrait of modern day East Hollywood that literature has been missing. All essential Los Angeles underbelly are accounted for as they struggle with the predestination written into their lives. Wood's reciprocity with the world he's created is evident in its detail from the starry eyes of the failed actresses, the grimy Midwestern druggies, and the futureless gaze of the barflies; where everything is rife with predation and laced with the language of the apocalypse. The world is always ending one way or another, isn't it?

R3,530 Discovery Miles 35 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book is designed to be a textbook for university students (MSc-PhD level) and a reference for researchers and practitioners. It is an introduction to dynamic modelling of forest growth based on ecological theory but aiming for practical applications for forest management under environmental change. It is largely based on the work and research findings of the authors, but it also covers a wide range of literature relevant to process-based forest modelling in general. The models presented in the book also serve as tools for research and can be elaborated further as new research findings emerge. The material in the book is arranged such that the student starts from basic concepts and formulations, then moves towards more advanced theories and methods, finally learning about parameter estimation, model testing, and practical application. Exercises with solutions and hands-on R-code are provided to help the student digest the concepts and become proficient with the methods. The book should be useful for both forest ecologists who want to become modellers, and for applied mathematicians who want to learn about forest ecology. The basic concepts and theory are formulated in the first four chapters, including a review of traditional descriptive forest models, basic concepts of carbon balance modelling applied to trees, and theories and models of tree and forest structure. Chapter 5 provides a synthesis in the form of a core model which is further elaborated and applied in the subsequent chapters. The more advanced theories and methods in Chapters 6 and 7 comprise aspects of competition through tree interactions, and eco-evolutionary modelling, including optimisation and game theory, a topical and fast developing area of ecological modelling under climate change. Chapters 8 and 9 are devoted to parameter estimation and model calibration, showing how empirical and process-based methods and related data sources can be bridged to provide reliable predictions. Chapter 10 demonstrates some practical applications and possible future development paths of the approach. The approach in this book is unique in that the models presented are based on ecological theory and research findings, yet sufficiently simple in structure to lend themselves readily to practical application, such as regional estimates of harvest potential, or satellite-based monitoring of growth. The applicability is also related to the objective of bridging empirical and process-based approaches through data assimilation methods that combine research-based ecological measurements with standard forestry data. Importantly, the ecological basis means that it is possible to build on the existing models to advance the approach as new research findings become available.

Designing the Social - Unpacking Social Media Design and Identity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Harry T. Dyer Designing the Social - Unpacking Social Media Design and Identity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Harry T. Dyer
R3,856 Discovery Miles 38 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book uses data collected from in-depth interviews with young people over the course of a year to explore the complex role of social media in their lives, and the part it plays in shaping how they understand and present their identity to a broad public on a wide array of platforms. Using this data, the book proposes and develops a new theoretical framework for understanding identity performances. Comic Theory, detailed in this book, centres on a consideration of the role of social media design in shaping identity, and explores the ways in which socio-culturally grounded users engage in acts of compromise, novelty, and negotiation with social media designs and digital technologies to produce unique identity performances. Positioned within the field of educational research, this book overtly challenges assumptions and myths about the internet as a neutral source of knowledge, instead exploring the way in which designs and technologies shape who we interact with and how we understand what it is to be social. Moving beyond the over-used 'digital natives' paradigm, this book makes a clear case that educators and education researchers need to move beyond a focus on coding and digital skills alone, highlighting the pressing need to take explicit account of the overlaps between digital technology, culture, and education.

Reluctant Skeptic - Siegfried Kracauer and the Crises of Weimar Culture (Hardcover): Harry T. Craver Reluctant Skeptic - Siegfried Kracauer and the Crises of Weimar Culture (Hardcover)
Harry T. Craver
R2,851 Discovery Miles 28 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The journalist and critic Siegfried Kracauer is best remembered today for his investigations of film and other popular media, and for his seminal influence on Frankfurt School thinkers like Theodor Adorno. Less well known is his earlier work, which offered a seismographic reading of cultural fault lines in Weimar-era Germany, with an eye to the confrontation between religious revival and secular modernity. In this discerning study, historian Harry T. Craver reconstructs and richly contextualizes Kracauer's early output, showing how he embodied the contradictions of modernity and identified the quasi-theological impulses underlying the cultural ferment of the 1920s.

Urban Transport in the Developing World - A Handbook of Policy and Practice (Paperback): Harry T. Dimitriou, Ralph Gakenheimer Urban Transport in the Developing World - A Handbook of Policy and Practice (Paperback)
Harry T. Dimitriou, Ralph Gakenheimer
R1,981 Discovery Miles 19 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The twenty thematic chapters in this book provide a broad set of perspectives on the plight, possibilities and opportunities of urban transport in the developing world, set against the challenges of sustainable development. The contributors expertly set the international context of transport policymaking and planning for developing cities and present a critical review of recent developments that have taken place and which offer lessons for the future. The special features that distinguish this book are: its multiple institutional perspectives on transport in urban development of developing cities; its efforts to link sustainability with urban transport and other development concerns; and its understanding of the consequences of globalism in choices and obligations for urban transport. This Handbook will prove invaluable for professional practitioners and academics engaged in and concerned with the future of movement in cities of the developing world. It will also be of interest to students of urban transport and city planning, particularly those from developing countries. Politicians, policymakers and international development agencies and investors, as well as those working for international non-government organizations wishing to familiarize themselves with the mounting transportation challenges of developing cities, will also find this book a source of inspiration. Sampling Strategies for Natural Resources and the Environment (Paperback): Timothy G. Gregoire, Harry T. Valentine Sampling Strategies for Natural Resources and the Environment (Paperback)
Timothy G. Gregoire, Harry T. Valentine
R1,448 Discovery Miles 14 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Written by renowned experts in the field, Sampling Strategies for Natural Resources and the Environment covers the sampling techniques used in ecology, forestry, environmental science, and natural resources. The book presents methods to estimate aggregate characteristics on a per unit area basis as well as on an elemental basis. In addition to common sampling designs such as simple random sampling and list sampling, the authors explore more specialized designs for sampling vegetation, including randomized branch sampling and 3P sampling. One of the book's unique features is the emphasis on areal sampling designs, including plot/quadrat sampling, Bitterlich sampling, line intersect sampling, and several lesser known designs. The book also provides comprehensive solutions to the problem of edge effect. Another distinguishing aspect is the inclusion of sampling designs for continuums, focusing on the methods of Monte Carlo integration. By presenting a conceptual understanding of each sampling design and estimation procedure as well as mathematical derivations and proofs in the chapter appendices, this text promotes a deep understanding of the underpinnings of sampling theory, estimation, and inference. Moreover, it will help you reliably sample natural populations and continuums.

Mysticism and Experience - Twenty-First-Century Approaches (Hardcover): Alex S Kohav Mysticism and Experience - Twenty-First-Century Approaches (Hardcover)
Alex S Kohav; Contributions by Eva Jane Neumann Fridman, Jess Hollenback, Harry T. Hunt, Richard H. Jones, …
R2,995 Discovery Miles 29 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mysticism: Twenty-First-Century Approaches embarks on an investigation of the concept of mysticism from the standpoint of academic fields, including philosophy, anthropology, religious studies, mysticism studies, literary studies, art criticism, cognitive poetics, cognitive science, psychology, medical research, and even mathematics. Scholars across disciplines observe that, although it has experienced both cyclical approval and disapproval, mysticism seems to be implicated as a key foundation of religion, alon with the highest forms of social, cultural, intellectual, and artistic creations. This book is divided into four sections: The Exposure, The Symbolic, The Cognitive, and The Scientific, covering all fundamental aspects of the phenomenon known as mysticism. Contributors, taking advantage of recent advances in disciplinary approaches to understanding mystical phenomena, address questions of whether progress can be made to systemically enrich, expand, and advance our understanding of mysticism.

Positive Approaches to Optimal Relationship Development (Hardcover): C. Raymond Knee, Harry T Reis Positive Approaches to Optimal Relationship Development (Hardcover)
C. Raymond Knee, Harry T Reis
R2,745 Discovery Miles 27 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How can we get the most out of our close relationships? Research in the area of personal relationships continues to grow, but most prior work has emphasized how to overcome negative aspects. This volume demonstrates that a good relationship is more than simply the absence of a bad relationship, and that establishing and maintaining optimal relationships entails enacting a set of processes that are distinct from merely avoiding negative or harmful behaviors. Drawing on recent relationship science to explore issues such as intimacy, attachment, passion, sacrifice, and compassionate goals, the essays in this volume emphasize the positive features that allow relationships to flourish. In doing so, they integrate several theoretical perspectives, concepts, and mechanisms that produce optimal relationships. The volume also includes a section on intensive and abbreviated interventions that have been empirically validated to be effective in promoting the positive features of close relationships.

Transport Planning for Third World Cities (Routledge Revivals) (Paperback): Harry T. Dimitriou Transport Planning for Third World Cities (Routledge Revivals) (Paperback)
Harry T. Dimitriou
R1,724 Discovery Miles 17 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cities within the developing world experience a form of urban development which is different to those in more industrialised countries. Rates of growth are usually much more dramatic, housing and transport are often provided informally, and institutional support for urban management is also much weaker. The crux of this book, first published in 1990, lies in the idea that urban transport planning cannot be viewed in isolation from this wider development context. Making special reference to a number of countries, including Brazil, India and Indonesia, chapters discuss problems of urban transport planning, deficiencies in the theory and practice of conventional transport planning, and the emerging alternatives in the countries under examination. This work addresses problems that are still of great concern to urban policy planners, professionals and academics, as well as students from the fields of development studies, urban geography and planning, architecture and civil engineering.

R3,313 Discovery Miles 33 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Atlas of Interpersonal Situations provides a systematic theoretical account for understanding the impact of situations on patterns of social interaction. Structured around descriptions of twenty-one of the most common situations that people encounter daily, this study presents the tools needed to understand how those situations influence interpersonal behavior. These descriptions are freestanding; each providing analysis, research examples, and everyday descriptions of the prototypical situation. The authors build upon interdependence theory, which stresses the manner in which outcomes are determined by the structure of interpersonal interaction. This analysis makes clear exactly what is "social" about "social psychology."

Strategic Planning for Regional Development in the UK (Hardcover): Harry T. Dimitriou, Robin Thompson Strategic Planning for Regional Development in the UK (Hardcover)
Harry T. Dimitriou, Robin Thompson
R5,351 Discovery Miles 53 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book brings together, in a single source, a coherent set of quality writings in the field of strategic regional planning. It aims to fulfill a need generated by a renewed emphasis in the UK on strategic regional planning enshrined in new style spatial strategies through recent legislation, including the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Bill (soon to become an Act). This legislation places upon regional bodies demands that they are currently poorly equipped to fulfill through lack of personnel experienced and trained in planning at this scale.
In five parts the book looks at the evolution of regional planning, the concepts involved, the spatial implications of regional economic development policies, the methods and techniques needed and finally at how strategic regional planning is currently put into practice in three regions with different priorities.
This book will be of interest to students of strategic and regional planning, as well as practitioners and policy makers.
