Just like the industrial society of the last century depended on natural resources, today s society depends on information and its exchange. Semantic Web technologies address the problem of information complexity by providing advanced support for representing and processing distributed information, while peer-to-peer technologies address issues of system complexity by allowing flexible and decentralized information storage and processing. Systems that are based on Semantic Web and peer-to-peer technologies promise to combine the advantages of the two mechanisms. A peer-to-peer style architecture for the Semantic Web will avoid both physical and semantic bottlenecks that limit information and knowledge exchange. Staab and Stuckenschmidt structured the selected contributions into four parts: Part I, "Data Storage and Access," prepares the semantic foundation, i.e. data modelling and querying in a flexible and yet scalable manner. These foundations allow for dealing with the organization of information at the individual peers. Part II, "Querying the Network," considers the routing of queries, as well as continuous queries and personalized queries under the conditions of the permanently changing topological structure of a peer-to-peer network. Part III, "Semantic Integration," deals with the mapping of heterogeneous data representations. Finally Part IV, "Methodology and Systems," reports experiences from case studies and sample applications. The overall result is a state-of-the-art description of the potential of Semantic Web and peer-to-peer technologies for information sharing and knowledge management when applied jointly. It serves researchers in academia and industry as an excellent and lasting reference and source of inspiration.
Due to differences in the legal systems and business environments, it is difficult to compare the process of buying and selling land in different European countries. Illustrated by a range of European case studies, this book identifies and discusses the problems of this and similar comparisons. It then examines how ontological modelling can be applied to real estate transactions and advocates this as a basis for comparing the various processes used across Europe. The book consists of four parts: the economic, legal and ontological aspects of real property transactions; a discussion of the current situation in different countries, thus showing the heterogeneity and complexity of processes that have to be captured; whilst the third and fourth parts describe ontological modelling and its benefits for the purpose of understanding the nature of real property transactions together with examples of modelling techniques applied to cadastre and real property.

This volume contains papers from the technical program of the 7th Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2010), held from May 30 to June 3, 2010, in Heraklion, Greece. ESWC 2010 presented the latest results in research and applications of Semantic Web technologies. ESWC 2010 built on the success of the former European Semantic Web Conference series, but sought to extend its focus by engaging with other communities within and outside Information and Communication Technologies, in which semantics can play an important role. At the same time, ESWC has become a truly international conference. Semantics of Web content, enriched with domain theories (ontologies), data about Web usage, natural language processing, etc., will enable a Web that p- vides a qualitatively new level of functionality. It will weave together a large network of human knowledge and make this knowledge machine-processable. Various automated services, based on reasoning with metadata and ontologies, will help the users to achieve their goals by accessing and processing infor- tion in machine-understandable form. This network of knowledge systems will ultimately lead to truly intelligent systems, which will be employed for va- ous complex decision-making tasks. Research about Web semantics can bene?t from ideas and cross-fertilization with many other areas: arti?cial intelligence, natural language processing, database and information systems, information - trieval, multimedia, distributed systems, social networks, Web engineering, and Web science.

The growing emphasis on complexity concerns for ontologies has attracted signi cant interest from both the researchers' and the practitioners' communities in modularization techniques as a way to decrease the complexity of managing huge ontologies.Researchhasproducedmanycomplementaryandcompetingapproaches, mainly with the goal of supportingpractitioners' methodologieswith sound and p- cisely de nedfoundationsand alternatives.Existing prototypessubstantiate research results and experimental evaluations have been performed.
