European Populations: Unity in Diversity was the general theme of
the 1999 European Population Conference, which convened in The
Hague (The Netherlands) from 30 August to 3 September on behalf of
the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS), The
International Union for the Scientific Study of Population,
(IUSSP), The Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute
(NIDI), Statistics Netherlands (SN), and The Netherlands
Demographic Society (NVD). On the threshold of the third
millennium, Europe is facing major and challenging demographic
issues that, to a large extent, will shape its future. These
challenges formed the basis for selecting special underlying themes
for the plenary sessions at the conference. Four outstanding
population experts were invited to present their views. Written
versions of their presentations form the contents of this book.
Dirk van de Kaa (The Netherlands) describes Europe and its
population. Henri Leridon (France) addresses the question How do
Europeans plan their families?'. Giuseppe Gesano (Italy) considers
the relationship between demographic trends and the labour market,
and Marek OkA3lski (Poland) writes about Europe's recent
international migration history.
Age is a complex cross-cutting notion for at least two reasons: the
intricate interweaving of its biological and socio-cultural
meanings and its dual significance as both a benchmark in an
individual's life course and a foundation for social structure.
This book offers new perspectives on age and ageing by combining
achievements in the biological sciences and their different
applications and interpretations in demography, anthropology,
psychology and other pertinent disciplines. Thirty contributors
from these various fields revisit the measures and the biological
models of ageing, the borderline between normal and pathological
ageing, the pertinence of chronological age as a benchmark along
the life course, its interrelations with psychological development,
with reproductive phases and other life events, the « normalizing
role ascribed by age classes and the risk of falling into ageism,
the cross-cultural diversity and temporal changes of its meanings,
the gender divide (real and perceived), as well as the rights that
should be enjoyed at each age.

This volume surveys the state of knowledge and research on the
determinants of human reproduction. It adopts an inter-disciplinary
approach and integrates information from demographic,
epidemiological and biological studies of fertility. The chapters
provide a comprehensive overview of reproductive processes,
including puberty and menopause, conception and fetal loss, and the
effects of sexually transmitted diseases and lactation. The volume
also considers the effects on fertility of nutrition and stress,
environmental and occupational hazards, and social behaviour, and
includes clinical papers on fertility following contraceptive use
and treatment of infertility. Findings from original research on
the determinants of human reproduction are also presented.
