Current Topics in Complex Algebraic Geometry (Paperback, New): Herbert Clemens, Janos Kollar Current Topics in Complex Algebraic Geometry (Paperback, New)
Herbert Clemens, Janos Kollar
R1,611 Discovery Miles 16 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 1992/3 academic year at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute was devoted to complex algebraic geometry. This 1996 volume collects survey articles that arose from this event, which took place at a time when algebraic geometry was undergoing a major change. To put it succinctly, algebraic geometry has opened up to ideas and connections from other fields that have traditionally been far away. The editors of the volume, Herbert Clemens and Janos Kollar, chaired the organizing committee. Activities were centered around themes, one per month, under the guidance of experts in each area. There were also four short workshops, which attracted many participants and helped considerably in communicating the new directions in algebraic geometry to a large audience. This book gives a good idea of the intellectual content of the special year and of the workshops.

R1,719 Discovery Miles 17 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is a book of "impressions" of a journey through the theory of com plex algebraic curves. It is neither self-contained, balanced, nor particularly tightly organized. As with any notebook made on a journey, what appears is that which strikes the writer's fancy. Some topics appear because of their compelling intrinsic beauty. Others are left out because, for all their impor tance, the traveler found them boring or was too dull or lazy to give them their due. Looking back at the end of the journey, one can see that a common theme in fact does emerge, as is so often the case; that theme is the theory of theta functions. In fact very much of the material in the book is prepara tion for our study of the final topic, the so-called Schottky problem. More than once, in fact, we tear ourselves away from interesting topics leading elsewhere and return to our main route.

This volume collects a series of survey articles on complex algebraic geometry, which in the early 1990s was undergoing a major change. Algebraic geometry has opened up to ideas and connections from other fields that have traditionally been far away. This book gives a good idea of the intellectual content of the change of direction and branching out witnessed by algebraic geometry in the past few years.

Intended for use in college courses for prospective or in-service secondary school teachers of geometry. Designed to give teachers broad preparation in the content of elementary geometry as well as closely related topics of a slightly more advanced nature. The presentation and the modular format are designed to incorporate a flexible methodology for the teaching of geometry, one that can be adapted to different classroom settings. The basic strategy is to develop the few fundamental concepts of elementary geometry, first in intuitive form, and then more rigorously. The rest of the material is then built up out of these concepts through a combination of exposition and "guided discovery" in the problem sections. A separate volume including the solutions to the exercises is also available.
