"Patiently Run the Race is a must read if you have ever wondered
what life is like for a missionary family serving in a foreign
country. Herb Barker tells his story with reverence and humor,
which inspires, informs and holds your interest to the very end." -
Dorothy C. Snyder, Writer-Speaker "A missionary's life becomes real
as we see, hear, smell, taste and feel the Chinese culture on the
island of Taiwan in reading this book. Herb Barker reveals his
heart and life of ministering to the people he and his family come
to love in the pages of this very appealing autobiography." - Sara
Hatchett, Music Educator "This book will help missionaries,
ministers and serious Christians realize again how life is lived
out in lands of darkness where the Light of Jesus needs so
desperately to be heard." - Faye Pearson, Missionary Executive and
Seminary Teacher. Herbert Barker is a retired missionary to Taiwan.
He is a native of Mountain Grove Missouri, where he graduated from
high school in 1947. He attended Georgetown Baptist College,
Georgetown, Kentucky, Southwest Missouri State College (now
Missouri State University), Springfield, Missouri, and
Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene, Texas, where he received the
B.S. Degree in 1951. He married Emma Jean Archer in 1951. They have
two children: James and Jeanette, and one grandson, Kelsey. After
graduation from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort
Worth, Texas, Herbert pastored churches in Texas until he and his
wife were appointed as missionaries to Taiwan by the Foreign
Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1959. He has
served as field evangelist, Director of Mass Communications,
Director of TEE, and church planter. After retirement in 1993, the
couple served among Chinese communities in Europe, American Samoa,
and Asia. They now reside at Baptist Home, Ozark, Missouri.
