This writing guide, by the author of Pearson's best-selling "Short
Guide to Writing about Biology "along with two well-known chemists,
teaches readers to think as chemists and to express ideas clearly
and concisely through their writing. Providing readers with the
tools they'll need to be successful writers, "A Short Guide to
Writing about Chemistry" emphasizes writing as a way of examining,
evaluating, and sharing ideas. The book teaches readers how to read
critically, study, evaluate and report data, and how to communicate
information clearly and logically. Readers are also given detailed
advice on locating, evaluating, and citing useful sources within
the discipline; maintaining effective laboratory notebooks and
writing laboratory reports; writing effective research proposals
and reports; and communicating information to both professional and
general audiences.
What does your favourite farmhouse cheese have in common with crusty sourdough bread, a glass of sparkling ginger beer or a bowl of marinated olives? The answer is each is a product of fermentation, a process that harnesses good bacteria in order to preserve ingredients and transform them into uniquely delicious foods with remarkable health benefits. Thanks to an increasing awareness of the crucial role probiotic-rich foods play in our wellbeing, the ancient art of fermentation is experiencing a renaissance. Add to this the joy, ease and economy of making fermented foods at home, and it's no wonder we are scrunching, pickling and bottling our way to better gut health and a deeper connection with our food. With this extensive collection, wholefood pioneer Holly Davis shares familiar and lesser-known recipes, as well as the wisdom and experience accumulated over 40 years of teaching fermentation techniques around the world. Her gentle and thorough guidance guarantees you will find a place in your home for one or more ferments that make your heart and stomach sing.
The Dwelling Portably series returns with Holly and Bert's newest
contribution to their fourth decade of DIY homesteading. The
2009-2015 collection assembles their correspondence and what
they've picked up over the last six years, lovingly crafted on
manual typewriters from a remote Oregon outpost. The tips and
tricks of the series are practical and useful--pertaining to things
like biking, permanent camping, alternative communities, DIY
healthcare, disaster preparation, eating off the land, and
MacGyver-like skills to prepare you for any and all situations.
Whether you're planning to step off the grid or just simplify your
life a little, "Dwelling Portably" has something for just about
everyone. Learn the values of eco-insulation as opposed to
synthetic, how to make a DIY wood-burning stove out of a 5-gallon
steel drum, how to convert a plastic storage in to a "cold frame"
for seedlings, and information about what simple vessels are ideal
for mid-ocean dwelling.

Dr. George Washington Sheafor was a Baptist evangelist and pastor
who lived during the years that the United States was growing, the
population was moving westward, and new territories and states were
being added. His teaching and preaching ministry spanned
seventy-six years, beginning in 1892 through his death at age 96 in
1968. His pioneer ministry began in Arizona while it was still a
territory. As a young man he worked on a ranch taming wild horses
off the range and preached to some of the ranch hands with whom he
worked. He attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois, and
was mentored by Dwight L. Moody, the great evangelist of his day.
He also studied the life and teachings of Andrew Murray and
patterned his life after this great English teacher and preacher.
He began preaching revival meetings in Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma
and Texas. During his pastoral ministry, he served in Comanche and
Brownwood, Texas; Lawton, Oklahoma; and in Lancaster, Texas. Dr.
Sheafor's pastoral ministry changed in 1941 when he became a Bible
teacher at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. His name is
synonymous with the teaching of Bible prophecy. In all of his
teaching and preaching, Dr. Sheafor majored on the wonderful
promises that God has given to every born-again believer. He
presented the joy and the glory to be experienced by every believer
in the Rapture, the Second Coming of Jesus, and the New Heaven and
New Earth. His wealth of knowledge concerning prophecy was
inimitable and he was loved and admired by all who heard him speak,
including many of the professors at Dallas Theological Seminary and
Dr. W.A. Criswell, pastor of First Baptist Church, Dallas for all
of the twenty-three years that Dr. Sheafor taught the class that
now bears his name.
