Nanoparticle Technology Handbook, Third Edition, is an updated and
expanded authoritative reference providing both the theory behind
nanoparticles and the practical applications of nanotechnology.
This third edition features twenty new chapters, providing a
reference much broader in scope than the previous edition. Over 140
experts in nanotechnology and/or particle technology contributed to
this new edition. The book not only includes the theory behind
nanoparticles, but also the practical applications of
nanotechnology. It examines future possibilities and new
innovations and contains important knowledge on nanoparticle
characterization and the effect of nanoparticles on the environment
and humans. Nanoparticle technology is a new and revolutionary
technology, which is increasingly used in electronic devices and
nanomaterials. It handles the preparation, processing, application
and characterization of nanoparticles and has become the core of
nanotechnology as an extension of conventional fine particle/powder
technology. Nanoparticle technology plays an important role in the
implementation of nanotechnology in many engineering and industrial
fields, including electronic devices, advanced ceramics, new
batteries, engineered catalysts, functional paint and ink, drug
delivery system, biotechnology, etc., making use of the unique
properties of nanoparticles, which are completely different from
those of bulk materials.
Loanwords and Japanese Identity: Inundating or Absorbed? provides
an in-depth examination of public discussions on lexical borrowing
in the Japanese language. The main objective of this book is to
explore the relationship between language and identity through an
analysis of public attitudes towards foreign loanwords in
contemporary Japanese society. In particular, the book uncovers the
process by which language is conceived of as a symbol of national
identity by examining an animated newspaper controversy over the
use of foreign loanwords. The book concludes that the fierce debate
over the use of loanwords can be understood as a particular
manifestation of the ongoing (re-)negotiation of Japanese national
identity. This book will appeal to scholars and students in
sociolinguistics, translation studies, and discourse analysis,
while its cultural and geographic focus will attract readers in
Japanese studies and East Asian studies.
This collection of essays explores the development of electronic
sound recording in Japanese cinema, radio, and popular music to
illuminate the interrelationship of aesthetics, technology, and
cultural modernity in prewar Japan. Putting the cinema at the
center of a 'culture of the sound image', it restores complexity to
a media transition that is often described simply as slow and
reluctant. In that vibrant sound culture, the talkie was introduced
on the radio before it could be heard in the cinema, and pop music
adaptations substituted for musicals even as cinema musicians and
live narrators resisted the introduction of recorded sound. Taken
together, the essays show that the development of sound technology
shaped the economic structure of the film industry and its labour
practices, the intermedial relation between cinema, radio, and
popular music, as well as the architecture of cinemas and the
visual style of individual Japanese films and filmmakers.

Karaoke Around the World investigates karaoke in its social and cultural context and examines the local and global effects of the karaoke phenomenon. Using the theoretical framework of thinkers from Erving Goffman to Foucault, the contributors consider the technological, spatial, ethnic, political, musical and gender aspects of karaoke singing. The book explores the influence of karaoke in such different societies as the United Kingdom, North America, Australia, Sweden, Brazil, Korea and Japan. The essays answer a number of questions about karaoke but also open up possible ways of theorising contemporary music practice in the future.
By dipping into this little book of simple Zen Buddhist sayings,
you can calm your anxiety and return serenity to your soul. Are you
feeling stress and anxiety from the demands of daily life? Do you
feel overwhelmed by your to-do list and the constant deluge of
information from all quarters? Are you unhappy with your life and
envious of those around you? At times like these it's important to
step back and take a breath. Zen meditation may conjure up images
of sitting in silence for long hours, but according to Buddhist
monk and author Shinsuke Hosokawa, Zen can be summed up as "the
knowledge needed for a person to live life with a positive
outlook." With this in mind, he has produced this charmingly
illustrated collection of thoughts and sayings to help you live
life with less stress and anxiety. The sayings include: Pay
attention to what is right in front of your eyes Nothing happens by
chance. Every encounter has its meaning Be careful not to confuse
the means and the purpose Keep flowing just like water Nothing will
control you Even a bad day is a good day Check the ground beneath
your feet when you're in trouble You'll never walk alone These 52
mindful sayings mirror the 52 steps traditionally taken to achieve
Buddhist enlightenment, and they also coincide with the 52 weeks of
the year--passing through the seasons, both in the natural world
and our lives. Each page has an illustration and a simple,
meditative reflection to help you see into your own heart, accept
your current state of being, reduce anxiety and find peace.
Whatever the time of year, whatever your time of life, by browsing
the pages of this book you are sure to quickly find a piece of
universal wisdom that will resonate with your soul.
This book presents the latest knowledge on the roles of progranulin
(PGRN) in normal physiology and pathology and explores the emerging
significance of PGRN as a therapeutic target and biomarker in
various CNS disorders, including frontotemporal lobe degeneration
and other neurodegenerative diseases. Following initial recognition
of the importance of PGRN in sexual differentiation of the
developing brain and adult neurogenesis, it was subsequently
discovered that PGRN acts as a chaperone of lysosomal enzymes and
plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular protein homeostasis.
It has also been found that sex steroids modulate the expression of
PGRN and its trophic effects in the developing CNS and that PGRN
directly or indirectly influences neural stem and progenitor cells.
Against this background, deeper understanding of the molecular and
functional properties of PGRN would provide fresh impetus for the
development of mechanism-based therapeutic approaches for multiple
disorders. Medications targeting the recovery of lysosomal function
appear to hold particular promise in patients with
neurodegenerative diseases resulting from PGRN insufficiency. In
examining multiple aspects of this fascinating field, the book will
be of high value for researchers and graduate students.

This book addresses new applications of omega-3 fatty acids from
both plant and marine sources in food supplements and
pharmaceuticals and covers three basic areas: structure and
function, production and processing, and health effects. The
authors review the latest clinical evidence on the impact of
consumption of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on prevalent
human diseases such as inflammation-related illnesses in general
and cardiovascular illnesses in particular. They also examine
technologies to purify marine oils and protect them against
oxidation as well as novel techniques for their incorporation into
foods.
This book studies five ethnic communities South Asian Americans,
African Americans, Japanese Americans, Mexican Americans, and
Somoan Americans to understand how their members feel about being
studied by researchers. American society has always had tension
between and among ethnic groups, and yet our researchers are given
limited training, if any, on how to approach various ethnic
communities, all of which see their problems and needs differently
than those outside their communities. This book bridges that gap by
focusing on trust-building as a necessary process in doing good
community research. The building of trust requires gaining
knowledge of a group's culture and history, their perspective on
social problems and issues, and the proper way of interviewing its
members, going well beyond the mere building of rapport. This book
offers the reader culturally sensitive methods to approach
interacting and interviewing members of each of these unique,
multifaceted ethnic communities."
