for SATB and organ This is a flexible hymn for general worship,
with an original hymn tune ('Charleston') by Howard Helvey. Either
Francis Scott Key's 'Lord, with glowing heart I'd praise thee' or
Charles Wesley's 'Love divine, all loves excelling' may be sung,
and Helvey employs hymnody's most popular traits, including a
majestic organ introduction, an emphatic unison first verse, and a
soaring soprano descant.
for SATB and piano For this appealing arrangement, Howard Helvey
has created the perfect marriage of text and melody. The popular
hymn tune 'Ash Grove' is paired with a beautiful text by Sarah
Doudney that is rich in imagery. The sparkling piano accompaniment
provides the perfect backdrop to the sensitively arranged vocal
parts and reflects the joyful and optimistic character of the text.
for SATB unaccompanied This gentle anthem is built around a warm,
hymn-like refrain, which gives way first to a free-flowing and
expressive section and then to a more sombre section. With a Latin
text from Ruth 1, this affecting piece with highly-expressive
harmony will serve well for weddings, services, and concerts.
for SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied Helvey's skilful
arrangement of the popular hymn by American Baptist minister Robert
Wadsworth Lowry is joyous and affirmatory. The anthem is suitable
for performance throughout the liturgical year, and the sweeping
melodies, contrasting textures, and rich harmonies complement the
celebratory nature of the text.
for SATB and organ Setting a text by the composer, this choral hymn
addresses God, the risen Christ, and the Holy Spirit in turn, with
a strong sense of worship and adoration. With an appealing melody,
sumptuous harmonies, and a captivating soprano descant, this is the
ideal piece for Trinity Sunday.
for SATB unaccompanied This paean to the divine creation of the
world sets part of the Benedicite text from the US Book of Common
Prayer. The four unaccompanied voice parts are used to great
effect, with phrases often beginning in a strong unison before
opening out into rich and colourful harmonies. Helvey highlights
the words through the use of homophonic textures and changing time
signatures to follow the natural stresses of the text.
for SATB and organ This French carol scored in 6/8 is set by Howard
Helvey with a rhythmic, animated, and cheerful organ part that
gives the traditional tune a lift. The choral parts are
straightforward, the choir singing in unison initially and later in
four parts with a key change from G major to B-flat major. This
arrangement is geared towards the average church choir and would be
a fresh addition to any Christmas service.
for SATB and organ O Be Joyful is a jubilant setting of Psalm 100
from the Book of Common Prayer. Suitable for performances
throughout the church year, it features fluctuating time
signatures, a lively tempo, and bright harmonies, which are
underpinned throughout by a sparkling organ part.
for SATB unaccompanied Helvey sets a combination of sacred texts to
beautiful music. Similar to his Cor mundum crea in me Deus, Helvey
writes for SATB unaccompanied, mainly in homophonic textures, with
thick, lush chords.
for SATB unaccompanied This is a lush setting of three poems by
Sara Teasdale who, in 1918, won the precursor to the Pulitzer Prize
for Poetry. This piece would make a welcome addition to the
repertoire of community choirs.
for SATB unaccompanied This traditional Early American Folk Hymn is
newly arranged by Howard Helvey as a commission by the Chancel
Choir of First Community Church in Columbus Ohio. It was premiered
at the 2008 Ohio Choral Directors Association Summer Conference. A
very exciting and dramatic arrangement with homophonic textures in
some parts and in other parts, the sopranos take the melody while
the other voices sing a rhythmic background of the text or on 'oo.'
The sacred piece is suitable for church services year round.
