Humphrey Gilbert-Carter (1884-1969) was the first academic director
of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden from 1921 until 1950. In
this book, first published in 1924, Gilbert-Carter gives examples
of informative labels that could be used in botanic gardens 'so as
to give information as well as pleasure to as many people as
possible'. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in
the history of science education or the history of botany in
Britain.
Originally published in 1922, this book was created to provide an
accessible guide to the plant varieties found in Cambridge
University Botanic Garden. It was written by Humphrey
Gilbert-Carter (1884-1969), the first academic Director of the
Garden, who held the position from 1919 to 1951. Numerous species
are listed, with information on their key characteristics and
native habitats. A variety of illustrative figures, a glossary and
a short bibliography are also included. This is a fascinating
