This volume explores recent techniques for the computational
inference of gene regulatory networks (GRNs). The chapters in this
book cover topics such as methods to infer GRNs from time-varying
data; the extraction of causal information from biological data;
GRN inference from multiple heterogeneous data sets; non-parametric
and hybrid statistical methods; the joint inference of differential
networks; and mechanistic models of gene regulation dynamics.
Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology
series format, chapters include introductions to their respective
topics, descriptions of recently developed methods for GRN
inference, applications of these methods on real and/ or simulated
biological data, and step-by-step tutorials on the usage of
associated software tools. Cutting-edge and thorough, Gene
Regulatory Networks: Methods and Protocols is an essential tool for
evaluating the current research needed to further address the
common challenges faced by specialists in this field.
This study focuses on impacts of the environmental and
socio-economic transformation on the indigenous people's
livelihoods in Vietnam's Central Highlands recent decades since the
country's reunification in 1975. The first empirical section sheds
light on multiple external conditions (policy reforms, population
trends, and market forces) exposed onto local people. The role of
human and social capital is examined again in a specific livelihood
of community-based tourism to testify the resilience level of local
people when coping with constraints. The study concludes with an
outlook on implications of development processed which still places
agriculture at the primary position livelihood, and pays attention
to human capital and social capital of indigenous groups in these
highlands.
Published on the 40th anniversary of the end of the war in Vietnam,
this book brings to life the experiences and memories of South
Vietnamese soldiers-the forgotten combatants of this controversial
conflict. South Vietnam lost more than a quarter of a million
soldiers in the Vietnam War, yet the histories of these men-and
women-are largely absent from the vast historiography of the
conflict. By focusing on oral histories related by 40 veterans from
the former Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces, this book breaks new
ground, shedding light on an essentially unexplored aspect of the
war and giving voice to those who have been voiceless. The
experiences of these former soldiers are examined through detailed
firsthand accounts that feature two generations and all branches of
the service, including the Women's Armed Forces Corps. Readers will
gain insight into the soldiers' early lives, their military
service, combat experiences, and friendships forged in wartime.
They will also see how life became worse for most in the aftermath
of the war as they experienced internment in communist prison
camps, discrimination against their families on political grounds,
and the dangers inherent in escaping Vietnam, whether by sea or
land. Finally, readers will learn how veterans who saw no choice
but to leave their homeland succeeded in rebuilding their lives in
new countries and cultures. Relates the stories of South Vietnamese
soldiers through a compelling narrative driven by oral histories
Brings the experiences of these soldiers to life for the reader by
sharing their compelling firsthand accounts Draws on a key oral
history collection newly established at the National Library of
Australia in 2013-2014 Provides fascinating insights into the
soldiers' early years, their military service and experiences, and
their post-war lives Conveys the strength of will and resilience
that enabled these men and women to endure the hardships of war,
the defeat of their armed forces, the loss of their country, and
the challenges of becoming refugees and resettling in new lands
This book is devoted to the analysis of causal inference which is
one of the most difficult tasks in data analysis: when two
phenomena are observed to be related, it is often difficult to
decide whether one of them causally influences the other one, or
whether these two phenomena have a common cause. This analysis is
the main focus of this volume. To get a good understanding of the
causal inference, it is important to have models of economic
phenomena which are as accurate as possible. Because of this need,
this volume also contains papers that use non-traditional economic
models, such as fuzzy models and models obtained by using neural
networks and data mining techniques. It also contains papers that
apply different econometric models to analyze real-life economic
dependencies.
The International Conference of Harmonization (ICH) has worked on
har- nizing the stability regulations in the US, Europe, and Japan
since the early 1990s. Even though the Stability Guidelines Q1A
(R2) was issued over a decade ago, issues surrounding this arena
continue to surface as the principles described in the guideline
are applied to different technical concentrations. As a result, the
stability community has continued to discuss concerns and find ways
of harmonizing regulatory requirements, streamlining practices,
improving processes in order to bring safe and effective medical
supplies to the patients around the world. In 2007, the American
Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) Stability Focus
Group organized two workshops - the Stability Workshop and the
Degradation Mechanism Workshop. These meetings attracted many
industry scientists as well as representatives from several
regulatory agencies in the world to discuss important topics
related to pharmaceutical stability practices. Recognizing the
importance of documenting these discussions and with the permission
of AAPS, I have worked with speakers to assemble a collection of 30
articles from presentations given at these two meetings, mainly the
Stability Workshop. I trust that this book will be beneficial to
all of you in providing guidance and up-to-date information for
building quality stability programs. v Freedom of our mind is

This book presents recent research on robustness in econometrics.
Robust data processing techniques - i.e., techniques that yield
results minimally affected by outliers - and their applications to
real-life economic and financial situations are the main focus of
this book. The book also discusses applications of more traditional
statistical techniques to econometric problems. Econometrics is a
branch of economics that uses mathematical (especially statistical)
methods to analyze economic systems, to forecast economic and
financial dynamics, and to develop strategies for achieving
desirable economic performance. In day-by-day data, we often
encounter outliers that do not reflect the long-term economic
trends, e.g., unexpected and abrupt fluctuations. As such, it is
important to develop robust data processing techniques that can
accommodate these fluctuations.

This edited book contains several state-of-the-art papers devoted
to econometrics of risk. Some papers provide theoretical analysis
of the corresponding mathematical, statistical, computational, and
economical models. Other papers describe applications of the novel
risk-related econometric techniques to real-life economic
situations. The book presents new methods developed just recently,
in particular, methods using non-Gaussian heavy-tailed
distributions, methods using non-Gaussian copulas to properly take
into account dependence between different quantities, methods
taking into account imprecise ("fuzzy") expert knowledge, and many
other innovative techniques. This versatile volume helps
practitioners to learn how to apply new techniques of econometrics
of risk, and researchers to further improve the existing models and
to come up with new ideas on how to best take into account economic
risks.
In contrast with trichromatic image sensors, imaging
spectroscopy can capture the properties of the materials in a
scene. This implies that scene analysis using imaging spectroscopy
has the capacity to robustly encode material signatures, infer
object composition and recover photometric parameters.
This landmark text/reference presents a detailed analysis of
spectral imaging, describing how it can be used in elegant and
efficient ways for the purposes of material identification, object
recognition and scene understanding. The opportunities and
challenges of combining spatial and spectral information are
explored in depth, as are a wide range of applications from
surveillance and computational photography, to biosecurity and
resource exploration.
Topics and features: discusses spectral image acquisition by
hyperspectral cameras, and the process of spectral image formation;
examines models of surface reflectance, the recovery of photometric
invariants, and the estimation of the illuminant power spectrum
from spectral imagery; describes spectrum representations for the
interpolation of reflectance and radiance values, and the
classification of spectra; reviews the use of imaging spectroscopy
for material identification; explores the recovery of reflection
geometry from image reflectance; investigates spectro-polarimetric
imagery, and the recovery of object shape and material properties
using polarimetric images captured from a single view.
An essential resource for researchers and graduate students of
computer vision and pattern recognition, this comprehensive
introduction to imaging spectroscopy for scene analysis will also
be of great use to practitioners interested in shape analysis
employing polarimetric imaging, and material recognition and
classification using hyperspectral or multispectral data.
The act of remembering is a means of bringing the past alive and
an imaginative way of dealing with loss. It has been the subject of
much recent scholarship and is of particular relevance at a time of
widespread transnational migration. This book is a valuable and
original contribution to the field of diaspora studies. Based on
in-depth oral narratives of forty Vietnamese women, it deals with
themes both universal and specific to this diaspora: divergent
memories in families, the significance of homeland, the return to
Vietnam, cross-cultural relationships, intergenerational tensions,
and the issues of silence and unspoken trauma among Vietnamese
refugees. It is the first study to apply memory and trauma theories
to a substantial base of oral narratives by Vietnamese women in the
West. Nguyen argues that understanding of these narratives provides
not only an insight into the way Vietnamese women have dealt with
loss, but also illuminates the experience of the wider Vietnamese
diaspora and other refugees.

In my professional career as a pharmaceutical scientist, I have
been involved with severalaspectsofthe
drugdevelopmentprocessfrompre-INDto commercialization and, somehow,
I usually found myself coming back to a stability-related issue.
The stability area seemed to draw my utmost interest because in my
day-to-day work, my opportunities involved more than one product,
and none of the issues were the
same.Eachsituationposedchallengesthatusuallyrequiredanexerciseofjudgment,
an understandingof regulations, a knowledgeof science, a graspof
compliance, and an appreciation of common practices.
Sinceearly2000,

struggled to ?nd good, concise, practical resources, one of which I
could just hand to a new scientist who wishes to gain a greater
understanding of stability sciences. In addition, I encountered the
same questions posted over and over on different stability best
practices discussion forums. As a book lover, I also have a good
collection of technical books. Unfor- nately, most of the stability
related volumes are outdated. Many of these materials are
theoretical and do not contain much practical information. I
understand that the pharmaceutical industry during this period is
quite volatile, and guidelines are

as current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) continue to be the
standard industry practice. Therefore, I hoped to ass- ble a
