Join two friends on a wild penguin chase around the city. Our self-described penguin 'expert' finds black-and-white animals at every turn. But are any of them really penguins - and can you spot the penguin hiding on every page? Written in Simon Philip's distinctively witty voice, this is brilliantly funny storytelling that plays on the pantomime convention of 'it's behind you'. Readers will love guessing what each new animal is from the glimpse given in the artwork, before turning the page to find out. There are fun facts about all the animals in a fact file at the end of the book.
Fading Eagle - Politics and Decline of Britain's Post-War Air Force looks at the rise and fall of British air power from a more critical than usual angle, in particular the impact of political ineptitude. The Royal Air Force, following a troubled start as a result of resentful contention by the other services, rose to prominence during the Second World War countering imminent invasion and striking at Hitler's army and industrial complex before the Normandy landings. Air power also proved a vital factor in support of both land and sea operations. Post-war, the RAF continued its newfound prominence among the armed forces, again as the principal defender of the United Kingdom from likely Soviet air attack and as the principal means of delivering the nuclear deterrent, countering the submarine threat and providing rapid comprehensive air support across the globe. Despite this, the change in political aspirations and priorities led to decisions and policies which resulted in unintended and unnecessary weakening of the RAF and other services. When the Cold War ended in 1991, many western nations, Britain not least among them, were determined that modern warfare as understood was at an end, air power quickly became sidelined despite being relied upon extensively since. In an era of high demand on the armed forces in tandem with less and incompetently managed funding, there have been calls for the RAF to be disbanded, as had been so during the early years of its existence.

A motivational diet plan to blast fat--and keep it off--by Ian K. Smith, M.D., the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Clean & Lean. New York Times bestselling author Ian K. Smith, M.D.'s unique new plan takes intermittent fasting to the next level, combining the power of time-restricted eating with a detailed program that flips the body into a negative energy state, scorching fat on the way to weight loss and physical transformation. Many IF books leave readers to figure out what and how much they should eat during their feeding window, and even how long to fast each day. Smith knows that even readers highly motivated to change their weight and their health need marching orders, and they're all here in Fast Burn!'s nine-week program. Dr. Ian believes in cleaner eating--forget perfect--and the two positively disruptive Jigsaw Weeks he works into his Fast Burn! program not only mix things up so Fast Burners stay on track, but introduce refreshing and less structured plant-based weeks to the program. Fast Burn! goes beyond the daily meal plan, but also includes simple and achievable exercises--with both gym and out-of-gym options--for every week as well as thirty-three recipes focusing on improved calorie quality, including the plan's signature Burner Smoothie, to use throughout the three stages of the program.
Current concerns with climate change have resulted in greatly
increased interest in power recovery from low grade heat sources.
This includes both hot fluid streams which can be expanded directly
to produce mechanical power and those which act as a source of heat
to closed cycle power generation systems. "Power recovery from low
grate heat by means of screw expanders" with a generalised overview
of how best to recover power from such sources, based on
thermodynamic considerations, which differs to the approach used in
classical thermodynamics textbooks and which includes an
introductory description of the types of working fluid that are
used in systems used to recover power from such sources and the
criteria that must be taken into account in their selection. This
is followed by a description of the mathematical modelling of twin
screw machine geometry. The modelling of the thermodynamics and
fluid flow through such machines is then given, together with how
this is used to predict their performance. Finally a detailed
description is given of systems currently used or projected both
for direct expansion of the source fluid and by recovery of heat
from it, which includes those which are particularly suited to the
use of screw expanders in place of turbines.
This is a companion self-study aid to Introduction to Pharmaceutical Calculations for practising calculations similar to those that may be presented in pharmacy examinations and in practice. Each section contains a variety of exercises which give the opportunity to practise calculations using the methods covered in Introduction to Pharmaceutical Calculations.
Race may dominate everyday speech, media headlines and public policy, yet still questions of racialized blackness and whiteness in Shakespeare are resisted. In his compelling new book Ian Smith addresses the influence of systemic whiteness on the interpretation of Shakespeare's plays. This far-reaching study shows that significant parts of Shakespeare's texts have been elided, misconstrued or otherwise rendered invisible by readers who have ignored the presence of race in early modern England. Bringing the Black American intellectual tradition into fruitful dialogue with European thought, this urgent interdisciplinary work offers a deep, revealing and incisive analysis of individual plays, including Othello, The Merchant of Venice and Hamlet. Demonstrating how racial illiteracy inhibits critical practice, Ian Smith provides a necessary anti-racist alternative that will transform the way you read Shakespeare.
For 100 years, the world's oldest independent air force, the RAF, forged a distinguished record in military air operations from the First World War through to recent operations over Iraq and Syria. There is, however, a field of endeavour in which the Royal Air Force has excelled: selling its public image. Of the three armed services, the air force is the one perfectly placed to advertise its wares 'at home' with the facilities to accommodate large audiences, through scintillating flying displays with ever more impressive aircraft and large airfields with readily available facilities. Originally centred on the RAF station at Hendon in North London, the RAF held its first public 'Air Pageant' in 1920. A grand affair, it continued as an annual event until 1937 when it was succeeded by the widespread 'Empire Air Day' held at several RAF stations until war intervened in 1939. The RAF came to true military prominence during the Second World War, particularly the 'Battle of Britain'; this then became the focus of the celebration and commemoration. However, the Battle of Britain Displays constantly contracted, eventually to zero, but for much of their existence were the most impressive air shows around the globe.
Northern 'Q': The History of Royal Air Force, Leuchars takes its title from the long standing primary role as one of the oldest airfields in the UK. Leuchars began its links with military aviation as far back as 1911 with the arrival of the Royal Engineers who established a balloon squadron for reconnaissance training. Following the outbreak of war in 1939, the station was identified as an ideal location to launch maritime operations under Coastal Command. By the end of the war, Leuchars, like so many other airfields, was under the threat of redundancy as many airfields were rendered surplus to requirements. The developing international situation placed a shift in defence with the Cold War and Leuchars was once more deemed to be in an ideal and vital position. From 1950, this corner of north-east Fife has been on permanent guard with every type of operational interceptor in RAF service. Now politics from austerity to Scottish independence, rather than sound judgement, is setting the agenda as the RAF leave for Lossiemouth in Moray.

The 9th edition maintains the content on all soil mechanics subject areas - groundwater flow, soil physical properties, stresses, shear strength, consolidation and settlement, slope stability, retaining walls, shallow and deep foundations, highways, site investigation - but has been expanded to include a detailed explanation of how to use Eurocode 7 for geotechnical design. The key change in this new edition is the expansion of the content covering Geotechnical Design to Eurocode 7. Redundant material relating to the now defunct British Standards - no longer referred to in degree teaching - has been removed. Building on the success of the earlier editions, this 9th edition of Smith s Elements of Soil Mechanics brings additional material on geotechnical design to Eurocode 7 in an understandable format. Many worked examples are included to illustrate the processes for performing design to this European standard. Significant updates throughout the book have been made to reflect other developments in procedures and practices in the construction and site investigation industries. More worked examples and many new figures have been provided throughout. The illustrations have been improved and the new design and layout of the pages give a lift. * unique content to illustrate the use of Eurocode 7 with essential guidance on how to use the now fully published code * clear content and well-organised structure * takes complicated theories and processes and presents them in easy-to-understand formats * book's website offers examples and downloads to further understanding of the use of Eurocode 7 www.wiley.com/go/smith/soil
In May 1945 with the war in Europe at an end, Britain had to play her part in the occupation of the defeated Germany. The near-bankrupt country was hard-pressed to maintain such a military presence on the continent and still manage our other out commitments across the Mediterranean, Middle and Far East. As the immediate post-war years came to pass, Britain and other western powers found themselves reviewing their relationship with the key victor in the east: the USSR. A defining moment came in 1948 when the Soviet Union attempted to starve the people of West Berlin to the point of being relinquished to their fate by the Western allies. Following a sterling and stubborn effort to keep the city supplied with the minimum materials and food the Soviet exercise ended in 1949. But the parameters were now set, the Iron Curtain had descended across the continent, and the RAF were to maintain a constant vigil with nuclear-armed aircraft on station ready to respond to Soviet aggression for the next four decades while politicians tried desperately to preserve the peace.

Althoughtheprinciplesofoperationofhelicalscrewmachines, ascompressors or expanders, have been well known for more than 100 years, it is only during the past 30 years that these machines have become widely used. The main reasons for the long period before they were adopted were their relatively poor e?ciency and the high cost of manufacturing their rotors. Two main developments led to a solution to these di?culties. The ?rst of these was the introduction of the asymmetric rotor pro?le in 1973. This reduced the bl- hole area, which was the main source of internal leakage by approximately 90%, and thereby raised the thermodynamic e?ciency of these machines, to roughly the same level as that of traditional reciprocating compressors. The second was the introduction of precise thread milling machine tools at - proximately the same time. This made it possible to manufacture items of complex shape, such as the rotors, both accurately and cheaply. From then on, as a result of their ever improving e?ciencies, high rel- bility and compact form, screw compressors have taken an increasing share of the compressor market, especially in the ?elds of compressed air production, and refrigeration and air conditioning, and today, a substantial proportion of compressors manufactured for industry are of this type. Despite, the now wide usage of screw compressors and the publication of many scienti?c papers on their development, only a handful of textbooks have been published to date, which give a rigorous exposition of the principles of their operation and none of these are in English
This thorough yet understandable introduction to the boundary element method presents an attractive alternative to the finite element method. It not only explains the theory but also presents the implementation of the theory into computer code, the code in FORTRAN 95 can be freely downloaded. The book also addresses the issue of efficiently using parallel processing hardware in order to considerably speed up the computations for large systems. The applications range from problems of heat and fluid flow to static and dynamic elasto-plastic problems in continuum mechanics.
This book presents the most up-to-date methods of three-dimensional modeling of the fluid dymanics and the solid-fluid interaction within these machines, which are still being developed. Adding modeling to the design process makes it possible not only to predict flow patterns more accurately, and also to determine distorting effects on rotors and casing of pressure and temperature distribution within the compressor. Examples outline the scope of the applied mathematical model.
