Traditionally, the subject of adolescent development has been
explored using a stage based approach, often with an emphasis on
the potential risks and problems of adolescence. Taking a different
approach, in this book the authors draw upon a wealth of research
to examine the period of development from adolescence to adulthood
from a dynamic systems perspective; investigating multi-facetted,
multi-variable explanations surrounding the transitions and
consequent transformations that occur in young peoples' lives, as
they change from teenagers to young adults. The book considers the
social institutions, interactions, contexts and relationships that
influence each other, and young people, during developmental
transitions. Topics covered include: dynamic systems theory in
developmental and social psychology adolescents in social contexts
compliments, lies and other social skills school, university and

will be key reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate
students in the field of developmental psychology, as well as
clinicians and policy makers working with young people.
Originally published in 1995, within the previous decade there had
been significant developments in our understanding of the learning
and motivation, together with the conceptual and cognitive
development, of older adults. This understanding had been enhanced
by findings from longitudinal studies which were now becoming
available. These findings demonstrated the gains that had been made
in research. In the past, inappropriately conceived studies have
led to the perpetuation of myths and stereotypes about the
intellectual development of older people. Special attention is paid
in this book to changing perceptions of ageing and intelligence,
learning aptitude, memory and intelligence testing. The important
topic of ageing and wisdom is also discussed.

Edward Bond Letters, Volume IV, focuses on four significant areas
of Edward Bond's work: education, imagination and the child;
theatre-in-education; At the Inland Sea; language and imagery. The
letters represent a coruscating attack on our present society, as
well as offering insights into how the situation might be improved.
Bond's letters attack modern education, arguing that "children are
being educated to sell themselves" and suggesting that social
problems are caused by an oppression of the imagination.
Many letters refer directly to a play - for instance Tuesday, which
presents an assessment of the many difficulties faced by
contemporary society. The language and imagery of one of Bond's
most recent plays, In the Company of Men, is animatedly discussed,
and Bond reminds us in a final description that "the good image is
always absent, because it is present in the mind.
Edward Bond is increasingly recognized as Britain's most
challenging and important living dramatist. Published for the first
time, these documents provide essential insights into his mind and
theories. Edward Bond Letters, Volume III includes two sections on
the important areas of writing and translating and continues to
trace Bond's interest in productions of his work. This lively and
thought-provoking volume of Edward Bond's Letters focuses on
"Saved" and "The Pope's Wedding," a radio production of "The Fool"
(1990), "The Company of Men" (1993) and the television plays
"Olly's Prision" (1992) and "Tuesday" (1993), and provides useful
background information for both the student and the general reader.

This well-established and accessible text has been completely
revised in this expanded fifth edition. Each chapter has been
updated, often extensively, to reflect current thinking, and an
important new chapter on death, dying and bereavement has been
added. Providing a comprehensive overview of the psychological
processes of ageing, the text examines what constitutes older age,
and presents the latest theory and research in a variety of
domains, including intellectual change in later life; ageing and
memory; ageing and language; ageing, personality and lifestyle; and
mental health and ageing. Consideration is given to the problems
inherent in measuring the psychological status of older people, and
the author looks to the future to answer the question "what will
constitute 'being old'?" This new edition is essential reading for
all those working or training to work with older people, and a key
text for students.

This accessible book has a simple aim to tell people what
psychology is about. It presents a review of the key areas of the
subject as it is traditionally taught, and provides the reader with
an introduction to important concepts and findings within each of
these. Armed with the information in this book, the reader should
be able at least to make sense of most psychological topics. At the
end of each chapter is a set of suggested further readings which
will enable a more detailed exploration of the particular topic
under discussion to be made.
The book will be of interest to two groups of readers. The first
comprises people who are new to the subject and simply want to know
what psychology is. The second consists of those who want a general
guide to an area but who wish to make up their minds on the details
for themselves. Hence the basic information and arguments are
explained, but details are not elaborated.
