The re-jacketing of AQA Functional English Student Book was requested by the Trade Sales Team following reports of interest from the market for that type of resource. The target market will be adults with low levels of literacy who are working towards the Basic Skills level 1 and 2 qualifications. They need adult-orientated materials that aren't patronising, give lots or opportunity for practice and are accessible in terms of language and layout. There are a variety of centres where adults can take literacy courses including FE colleges, adult learning centres, prison units, etc. Market feedback indicates that adults doing these courses buy their own resources on the recommendation of the course tutor. There are an estimated 7 million adults with low levels of numeracy and literacy (Department for Innovation, Universities and Skill website) and there is an ongoing government initiative, with funding, to encourage more of these adults to improve these skills.
